I'm so sorry for your loss, my first service dog had to be euthanized 2 years ago. She was a Chihuahua Pitbull mix that we rescued, her name was Lola. I got her when I was 6 and I spent every day training her, playing with her, and walking her, she was my best friend. She didn't become a service dog until I was about 9. My dad was going through legal trouble so I had to move in with my grandma, my dad was the only person in my life that truly cared about me, and I couldn't see him at the time. I started developing major mental issues and Lola started picking up on them. Before I had panic attacks or mental break downs, she would run over to me and jump on my lap, she would not stop licking my face until I calmed down. She nudged my arms so I would hug her and pet her. Eventually, my issues got worse and I was too afraid to go to school. I knew about service dogs because I've always been an avid animal lover, so I started doing research and I realized that she was already a service dog in a way. She preformed tasks and had AMAZING obedience skills because I walked her daily, we went to parks often, and we took her to pet friendly places a few times every week. She grew up around a lot of people and animals so she did great when we started service dog training. My grandma preformed the public access test on us to see how she would do while we were in a mall for the first time, she did PERFECT! We talked with my school and she was approved to go with me daily. I started going to school again with Lola by my side 24/7. My dad was sentenced to prison when I was 11 and I was sent to the mental hospital 3 times in a year, each time I got out my grandma brought Lola with her so I could see her as soon as I got out. Lola was with me for 12.5 years, she was the best damn dog I've ever had. She understood 3 languages, sign language, hand signals, and spelling. She was VERY smart. Sadly, she had a tumor in her stomach that ruptured which is why she was euthanized. We didn't know she had a tumor inside of her. Luckily she didn't suffer for long. As soon as she collapsed in the living room, she was rushed to the vet. She was euthanized and cremated so she could still be with me forever. I miss her so much. My 2nd service dog just retired so I got a standard poodle puppy to be my next service dog. I've had him for about a month now and he reminds me of Lola so much, he even has the same markings and colours as her. He is the perfect puppy so far and he will be starting puppy classes soon. He is finally big enough to fit into Lola's old harnesses! He will be following in her footsteps. Hopefully he won't love food as much as she did though.. Lola loved food more than anything, so she had to be on a strict diet, I had to count her calories and exercise her daily or else she would look like a potbelly pig. She was a smallish dog, she was only 20 pounds, but DAMN! THAT GIRL COULD FIND A SINGLE PIECE OF BACON 3 MILES AWAY IF SHE WANTED TOO! She had a strong nose, and an even stronger food drive. She would do ANYTHING for food. I live behind a grocery store and she ran away while I was gone once... We found her at the shelter that same day and they said a volunteer found her inside of the GROCERY STORE! She climbed over out 6ft tall fence that morning while the store was cooking chicken, I can't believe she made it all the way over there AND went inside. She LOVED food as you can tell. She was an amazing dog, I wish she lived long enough to see me graduate high school, I just graduated.

Something all dog owners know. Every day is a treasure! For me personally, I go on to get a successor as soon as I'm able. I'm afraid of falling to depression (I'm at risk for falling extremely low) and it gives me something positive to work on. As I'm able. I do not look at it as "replacing" my dog, I'm getting a successor for needs I still have. But I know that's not for everyone. Do what you need to do to grieve! Sadly, my (service) dog just passed away a month ago. She wasn't quit 6 yo! She bloated and, by the time we got her to the vet, it was already too late. It tore me apart. I'm sorry about Peak. How old was he?

I have two SDiTs, one is an older dog who I have been training off and on for two years to be a service dog for me, the other is an almost three month old puppy who is doing very well in his training. I am planning to go to Disneyland in June, should I take one of my dogs with me, and if so, which one should I take? The older one has more PA experience, while the puppy is doing better with training in some ways. Would love your opinion in this! BTW, I am autistic and while a service dog greatly benefits me, I might be able to go without if needed. But a service dog greatly helps! Any insight is appreciated!

Hi, there young lady. I too had to deal with burnout. I'm 67 years old, just received my Bachelors of Arts degree in Digital Photography. I decided to walk, with my Service Dog Bear. We had to fly to New Hampshire and it was Bear's first time. Now that was an adventure. We walked together to receive my degree. The flight home was a little better. Oh by the way Bear is a German Shepherd 105 pounds. He's my Mobility/PTSD/TBI. I'm a disabled Vietnam Era female Navy veteran. I had to take a break from a lot because I hit that wall. I even stopped looking at my camera. Now I'm at a point where if it gets done that's cool, if not we'll there's always tomorrow. Bear is my lifeline. He turns 4 this year. We are going to Disney. Keep your head up. Stay in contact 👵🏾🐕‍🦺

Great suggestions! We have many of those and are great things for new handlers to buy. Another great thing is Allerpet liquid to wipe on your dogs coat in case others may have allergies. We are up north and boots are so important to protect from ice melt and shards of sharp ice! I love standard poodles, they make such amazing service dogs and yours is STUNNING! I adore them vicariously, as I can’t physically handle the needed grooming, and I also needed a strong dog to pull things in a cart or sled. My boy requires minimal grooming, is strong as an ox, is chill around chaos and yet a total klutz. I’m unsure how he’s so empathetic and smart when I’m sure his head is full of cement. 😂

I have a girl. And half of her gear is blue. I hate the color pink. (No offense to anyone, just not a color for me). But I love the color blue. So she got a lot of blue gear. I also have a pocketed bandana as well that I hand made. It's a Christmas plaid one, with black flannel on the back. With just 1 service dog, emergency info inside patch on it. Reason I made it, and made it Christmas, was because just this past December I had surgery on my left hand/wrist. And so wasn't going to be able to get her whole harness and cape in her. So I used the bandana and it just slips over her head. So that way she still had something on her, as well as we still had some of our emergency items.

my service dog is a basset hound. he was trained as a therapy dog first. he's done 6 years of amazing therapy dog work. as time progressed it became obvious i needed a service dog so i began work with trainers to train him. he was able to take to it easily and is able to seperate the 2 skill sets with 2 different commands. you have the sense of a large dog in a shorter body (bassets are considered giant breed dogs) he's 64 lbs so he is pretty sturdy. he's done excellent work.
