John, you're discussing the issue here. I'm finding certain pistols equipped with "combat" sights require the front sight be raised just enough that the top of the slide is barely visible. This is true even if the hold places the front sight just over the target, versus using a 6 o'clock hold. With all the black just below visibility, certain pistols shoot consistently 3", even 4" low. The distances at which I'm shooting are 7 and 10 yards which gets to how the manufacturer zeroed the sights -- for what purpose and at what distance. Another "solution" is of course installing a slightly higher rear sight or slightly lower front sight.

John, very helpful, thank you. Can you comment on combat sights versus target sights? Combat sights shoot low at the range, unless the point of aim is adjusted upward. But even then, it seems to me the front sights must be slightly raised above the rear sight. If not, shots are 3" low. If you shoot one gun, you adjust, no big deal. With multiple guns, you must remember how each gun shoots.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about combat sites versus competition sites. There is a difference between the two I’d be more concerned about a level pistol shooting level. Most of the time. Combat sites are set for an 8 inch paper plate at 12 to 15 feet away, which means if the pistol is level, the impact should be where it is 8 inch paper plate. My opinion, you should really start focusing on bending at your waist and not your wrist. This will help. Keep the weapon level and keep you on target doesn’t matter which one you choose as long as the pistol level always remember the sites are there for a convenience. Thank you so much for commenting. Looking forward to seeing your response.

@@johnthefirearmsinstructor I've had significant issues adjusting to the combat sights. Even if I raise the point of aim to cover up the target, the shots are consistently low. What has been helpful is something you discussed in your video. If I slightly raise the front sight only, so the top of the slide becomes barely visible, then the shots are on target. If the front sight is positioned such that the top of the slide is just below sight, the shots are low with combat sights, but on target with "target sights." . Can you discuss the relevance of top of slide visibility? Obviously I'm mindful the top of the front and rear sights must be level. My point is, two different type sights ("combat" vs "target") require two different holds, i.e. the top of the slide is just barely out of sight vs just barely visible. I've had others shoot the pistols in question with the same results. I've also read posts on youtube discussing the same issue. Adjusting aim from the waist versus the wrists is helpful -- I do notice results are worse when shooting at a low target, so that suggests I'm not maintaining a level gun while doing so. All of this would, i think, be an excellent topic for a video. All guns simply do not shoot the same, the hold must be altered to suit the gun.

Hiya John. Sorry I haven't commented in a while. (I'm still trying to find the time to check out your store & range.) Anywhoo.. I completely agree with your pros & cons of "the plastic fantastic", as I call it. 1yr ago I finally broke down and bought the glock 19 gen 5. Being a die hard 1911 guy all my life, that glock trigger immediately drove me to drink. Man is it stiff and the travel pull starts in Canada and ends in Cuba somewhere. I Hate it, hate it, hate it. But whatever.. It goes bang and parts and ammo will be everywhere on the unalive bodies when everything collapses, so there's one thing you can toss in the "pro" pile I guess. I dig your easy demeanor and genuine desire to teach us in here. I promise I'll find some time and check you out soon. I literally live 8 mins or so away. So I look forward to meeting up and blowing some carbon out of a few firearms in your range if possible. Have a great one man, keep up the good work. 👍

Love your videos. Thank you. I have been shooting about 9 months and love it and go to the range 4 to 5 times a week. I understand practice only makes perfect when you practice perfect. Everyone at the range cares about 10 yard shots. I am pretty good at 5 yards and it the 4" label (ordered after you told us about it) about 45 out 50 with the 5 just missing so I moved to 7 yards. I just want to get accurate and now just starting to shot w both eyes open. I only waste 10 out of 50 at 10 yards. What do you think? Thanks sir❤

I shoot competion .22 onehanded at 25 yards. I recently got my first gun. A smith and wesson model 41 with the 5.5 inch heavy barrel. I shoot low with it more kften then not. Your the first one that tells me to use the waist to aim. But it makes sense. You don't turn with the arms just as you said. I will try that the next time im at the range.

I had a huge problem with shooting low/right (left handed) with my Glock 19, and other people convinced me that the problem was the weighty trigger. Your explanations helped me recognize the errors in my stance, grip, and aiming, and now that I know that, I won't be wasting money on a different trigger

I have one 1911 that used to be right on all the time, but lately, it seems to be low and left. Not by a little, but a lot, like 12-14 inches left and 12-14 inches low at 15 yards. Now my other 1911s are still in the target area usually within a 6 inch circle of the bull's eye. Since I'm still on with the others, I have thought it is the pistol, but I can't fine anything off on it in disassembly. I'm beginning to think I am shooting it differently for some reason, and after your description, I think I'll set up a video of me from the side to see if I am jerking or moving. Possibly the only improvement I can see on your video is that you paint your sights so that they show up against the yellow so we can see them. Thanks.

Instead of pulling the trigger more slowly, you should try tightening your grip with both hands. You should find that your trigger pull really doesn't matter as long as you have a vise like grip on the gun so it isn't moving.

It’s meh. It’s the minimum I’d accept for an EDC defensive pistol. It’s acceptable- but “best?” Probably not. The only reason so many LEO agencies use it is because of budget constraints, not because it’s the “best”. And before you ding dongs start in with repeating crap you heard- I have been involved in multiple pew pew incidents- and people are more resilient than you think, and take a lot to put down. Which is why I get the hottest.40 & .357sig rounds my G27 can handle without kabooms 💥

The permit shows you have taken the steps to be educated in the use of a weapon. Without the permit you won't have this legal document showing you've taken the necessary steps to legally conceal carry. If some overzealous prosecutor wants to go after you, the permit helps a lot, you'll have that to aid your defense.
