I can’t speak for my American friends, but in Canada, one of the biggest reasons we hate the Leafs is because they are constantly shoved down our throats. Tue Canadian sports media acts like they’re the only team in Canada, and that everyone cares only about them. Consider this: The company that owns the team also owns SportsNet. Needless to say, they spend more time drooling over the Leafs than they do covering all the other teams (6) put together. For our Americans, in Canada we have two main sports channels. SportsNet and TSN. And most people you ask will tell you they prefer TSN for the reasons stated above. SportsNet is Rogers, and TSN is Bell. Those are the two main cable companies in the country. Though a few smaller ones exist. Shaw in particular is popular in central/western Canada, and have made some efforts in expanding into Ontario. And there’s also the French company, Videotron. They are all over Québec, and eastern Ontario. But my point is, if you live in Canada, you’re watching all your hockey games on TSN and SportsNet, and the latter loves to tell you how great the Leafs are. All playoff games are on SportsNet. They’ve had that contract for some time. And CBC broadcasts national games under the SportsNet umbrella. So it’s always nice that The Leafs get eliminated early. This way we don’t have to hear all the talking heads go on about how great they are.

In truth, after playing for 22 years… I think the league needs much younger coaches who still excite the players but also just now begin to form their composure and professionalism for the position hired. These old coaches are dinosaurs, have nothing to relate to these players and these guys are also richer than every coach, so they have even less reason to listen to their bs. The only coach who makes sense in the NHL is Rod from Carolina. He’s young enough to still remember being a captain and running a group of guys.

One clause that should be included in future contracts is for the amount of wages that player receives in one season be determined by how much they meet/fail to meet expectations. Marner just came off the back of having a worse season than the last 2x with 85 points, 14 less than last season and had a DISMAL run in the playoffs. No doubt his 11m-12m a season contract is no justification at all. It's maybe 8 and that's being generous.
