If you wanna make an anime adaptation of Touhou, I really think a Pokemon-esque approach is the way to go. Loosely referencing the plots of various games from arc to arc, but mostly doing its own thing. The games themselves don't seem to really have much narrative substance. Most of the lore comes from text outside of them. It seems like most of the fun in fan works comes from utilizing the colorful cast to interact with whatever crazy plot devices you want. If you try to adapt the games into an anime format, you end up having to take a lot of creative liberties anyway, or the anime is just nonstop action. The games' stories are designed as an excuse for an arcade style shooter, after all. So why not go all the way with original content? I say a Touhou anime should have almost nothing to do with the games outside of including the familiar characters the way Pokemon includes characters from its games in an entirely separate continuity. Take full advantage of plots that can't work well for an arcade style shooter that focuses on nonstop action. More suspense, more mystery, and more interpersonal interactions between the characters.

12 years. The series took 12 years to make beginning in was was arguably the Golden Age and ending well into a period were a lost of creators at the time have long abandoned the series. I think this is something that isn't touched on as the project feels like in the beginning that it hopes to get a large support and finish up at a certain point. That planned ending never came. As it lingered on like so many golden age works, fans, and creators it too started to suffer the decay of the fandom in the mid 2010s and the changed if not hostile new era didn't do it any favors. In a way the last episode feels more like a small love letter not to the current fans but to the old ones who stuck around just long enough to see the series to the end. As someone in the late 20s who is likely in the age range of the creators and most of the still lingering golden age Touhou fans I felt that just watching the episode.

In regards to Yukari, my impression is that in the end she deliberately outplayed everybody - even her own underlings. She seems satisfied when the tables have finally turned against the Moria shrine - everything just as planned. It looks more like she deliberately plays a villain, antagonizing half the yokai and even persuading her allies she is really trying to get rid of Reimu. And only Reimu totally sees through this bluff (there is a certain wisdom she just prefers not to show too much) - and isn't even too serious in threatening Yukari for all the mess she keeps instigating. And in truth, Yukari seems to act more like a guardian goddess trying to bring as many mythical creatures to Gensokyo while having Reimu maintaining the balance (and when something really threatens the balance, she is quick to ally with Reimu). She might have deliberately "forgot" Marissa, to make sure the plan would fail successfully. Now what I really see as a total blunder in regard to Moria shrine battle - that's Marissa getting between the rock hands. Yeah, she might be too rash sometimes, but she's clearly smart (just lacking some or Reimu's perspective sometimes) and very maneuverable. Even if she had trouble outrunning one hand, she wouldn't straight up run into the other. What I was expecting, was being grabbed by the first hand, or, more likely, narrowly avoiding being grabbed/slapped only to be swept by the wave as the hand impacted water (and then maybe caught by the second hand.

A permanent settlement on the moon is established in the mid-70's (Jamestown Base and Svezda) and on Mars (mid-90s onwards). Now, what do you think? What would the Lunarians react if the space race goes this route? Would the Jamestown Crisis of '83 happen differently from the show? Imagine some female US/Soviet astronauts acting as diplomats. Oh boy, imagine China's Chang'e program in this timeline. If a war broke out, how would Moon Marines and Spetznaz Cosmonauts fare against the Lunar Defense Corps? Will the US and USSR come into a peaceful resolution with the Lunatic Kingdom on favorable terms?

I also think there are many problems in this work. Although we cannot be force them to tell the complete plot of a game in two or three episodes, they still simplify the narrative more and more perfunctorily in this limited space.
