When the TX radio is set to vox like this with the plug attached will it also key up if it just hears enough noise from outside the repeater box itself or will it only key up based on a signal from the cable?

A license is only needed to PTT in a GMRS frequency(ies). And that license is only 35$ and requires no Armature radio operators tests. It's easy to get. This is an FRS/GMRS radio (and some more if you work on it). It's not equivalent to the Yeasu or Kenwood HAM radios HH true HAM radio as implied. It simply isn't. But it can easily be made to be like those with the three button hack mentioned in this video. There is another step not mentioned here. But you certainly can transmit on FRS, or GMRS with the 35$ GMRS license and get some good 2-way communications use from it. Gotta be lawful. Know the frequencies and power of your radio! I ramble.... Sorry... So... you can easily hack it to make it transmit all the way to 200 / 227. Do your research. Won't tell you here. But still, this is an awesome transceiver for the price. As a receiver it's 110%. I own at least a dozen of them in different flavors. All of them are worth their purchase price and far beyond. But be careful of the hype these videos push. This is the closest to a sane and truthful video tutorial I've ever seen. And you probably want the 771G. Not the 771 antenna as a side note. The rest of this post is f'ing awesome! Please post anther! Some really great info! This is the best UV5r video posted, ever! I subscribed and Thumbs-up'd

The problem with this video and countless other videos about making a functioning repeater using two Baofeng UV-5Rs is that not one of them I have ever seen has tested the "repeater" anywhere other than on the bench. Not one audio test, not one range test, not one test of any kind. I hereby challenge TheBillo313 to and the rest of them to show us a real-world test where they have placed this "repeater" at some remote location and actually recorded the audio that comes out of the radios transmitting to and receiving from the "repeater".

My guess is that they have some kind of isolation transformer, because by plugging a standard cable into each radio, turning on the receive radio causes, at least in my case, the transmit radio to transmit, regardless of the VOX setting.

If I understand this right, which is by no means a given, it's one of those technologies where the more people who have one, the better it works. In other words, if you have a device and you're hiking in the mountains it's not going to be proximate enough to another device, that is also close to a device to get into the mesh. I doubt if that device could even reach a mile on its own.

If you are hiking with friends and you are out of cell range then you will all be able to communicate together. Or if you are camping then you could set up a node in a tree at your camp site. Folks claim to get “miles” of reach but I think I’ll just have to see for myself. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks. While not a big Vhf & Uhf repeater fan my old Wouxun no longer likes to keep the battery pin outs in contact with the pin outs on the rig itself without help such as a cable tie. So, how can you go astray when the UV-5RTP is sold for around $24 & I ordered one three days ago. Depending how ambitious I am I may use the Chirp software to program in a substantial list of repeaters. On the other hand I'll primarily use it when traveling long distances or for satellite-based experimentation. Thus Chirp will be handy when I know my route such as from Albany NY to Saint Charles Virginia & until then only wanting roughly 3 to 5 repeaters programmed into the rig I likely will do it the old fashioned way. Again thanks & I will remember this video when the time arises for needing several dozen repeaters programed in the rig. If one wonders why I bought the UV-5RTP that lacks the FM broadcast band and some other features the answer is I really am only interested in narrow FM modulation & liked that it output on high power 8 watts which is enough where sometimes 5 watts keys the repeater but barely. I also liked its price especially since I am not a fan of some of the content & tribal like behavior that repeaters can offer. De, kc2wvb

@@thebillo313 I bought a six pack of these radios (Retevis RT5RV) after watching Dave Kessler's (KE0OG) review of them. I've been wondering what I could do with the 4 remaining radios. A cross band repeater could be just the thing! It would be great in an emergency. Sure, it would be better if there was a way to send an ID, but it's still legal for the parties using the repeater to sign the call of the repeater: "W3WKD via the WA3VQJ repeater!" A battery and/or a solar panel, 2 external antennas, that linking cable from your video and you're good to go! The users would have to setup their rigs for crossband operation. But that's trivial to do on my FT991A, for instance. I could see these making a real difference in a pinch! Thanks for the great idea! I'm going to give this a try!

@@thebillo313 Good morning, I sent you an email because I don’t want to post my personal address here. And I found out why i can’t see the Export tab on Repeterbook, it’s because you have to login with an account to access it.

You lost me with the astronauts on the moon thing. I have never seen astronauts on the moon. I have only ever seen them in a secrets recording studio, with a set designed to make is think it was the moon. 😂 🧐

Ha ha you’re right! As a matter of fact I almost re-recorded it while was editing. I was going to instead reference Maverick from Top Gun. Good pick up.
