And you can see in the bathroom the mirrors are slanted, because if they were fully vertical they would be showing the director and his film crew, wouldn't they?

A lot of bathrooms in that era did that as so that people could have an almost full view of their body to look over, and to give more users access to the mirrors at the same time. They positioned them up high as well to keep them clean from splashing water. I’ve even seen modern day restrooms that have done the same thing.

There is a 'james cagney' in everybody. He was extremely proficient: in his humanity, his anger, his justice, his affection, his violence, etc, etc. The only actor (besides bogart, edward g. robinson and john wayne) who could wear mascara and be even more classy. Must of been the era (pre-ww2); however, those guys could had worn mascara at any time, and gave it style.
@moriahjacobs61312 жыл бұрын
He had to. He was very fair and the cameras would not have been able to capture. I agree, he wears mascara well.

I missed that... was too busy laughing over the sound of the toilet flushing from the guy's head hitting it (out of sight). It's funny cuz for many years (after this film), movies wouldn't even SHOW bathroom stalls.

Actually, he tries to open it, finds it locked, then proceeds to unlock it when the frame freezes.

They're not very well-known, but the entire run of urban/gangster comedies Jimmy made in between 1931's PUBLIC ENEMY and 1935's G-MEN [ LADY KILLER, JIMMY THE GENT, BLONDE CRAZY, HARD TO HANDLE, HERE COMES THE NAVY, FOOTLIGHT PARADE, PICTURE SNATCHER, WINNER TAKE ALL - somehow he had time left over to make some snappy dramas too, like THE CROWD ROARS and THE MAYOR OF HELL ] are a brilliant high-point in 1930s moviemaking. The very best all came during the "pre-Code" period, but their greatness has less to do with naughty double-entendres (though of course there's plenty of that) and more their low-budget, rapid-fire, completely unpretentious _energy._ This was when Warners - well, most studios - were turning out a completed feature film a week (!) and, mired as we are in the era of the 2 1/2 hour special-fx blockbuster that more often than not puts you to sleep, packed in all the drama, comedy, high-octane personalities and high-speed dialogue that would fit into running times of 70 to 80 minutes. Friends, make it your business to try and watch every Warner Bros movie made between 1931 and 1934 that you can. You will thank me for the advice!

How many movies did Cagney make in 1933?
@philiphalpenny97615 жыл бұрын
Five, Bobby, with time off for good behaviour. Cagney's pal Joan Blondell made something like 10, in 1931 alone!!! Crazy scheduling...
@bobbyfrancis89575 жыл бұрын
Thanks for letting me know, and I know that Cagney would come to Warner Bros. driving a Model T Ford, and he would bring his lunch in a brown paper bag.
@philiphalpenny97615 жыл бұрын
@@bobbyfrancis8957 I think the artist in him was crushed by his Warner Bros. experience, refering to the studio as" the factory". This , in turn, lead him to become instrumental in setting up the SAG union movement, trying to create better working conditions, rather than soullessly grinding out product. The films would naturally suffer if the actors are exhausted...

The ultimate slander was the charge of treason leveled against him. And the impeachment was slanderous. Joe’s boy got his job because Joe leaned on the Ukrainian government just as Cagney does on this reporter.
