024 Incorporating Mqtt into the PICO W to Give the Zoomie a Way to Communicate

The Zoomie (Autonomous Robot) needs to communication with the Zcheduler of ZoomTown. Wifi and MQTT will be used to for bi-directional communications. In this video, the focus will be on getting WiFi and MQTT setup and configured to operate.
A "profile" library will be used so that each Zoomie can have it's own identity without requiring a different, custom tailored program for each individual Zoomie.

I use an RPi 2 as an MQTT broker. I set it up several years ago. I was using an RPi 3B to monitor outside temperature and humidity and sending the data to an RPi 4 via MQTT. I had mixed results because of a marginal WiFi signal strength at the location of the RPi 3b. The WiFI problems were caused by trees not distance. Last summer the RPi 3B died. I replace it with two RPi Picos. I send data from an outside Pico via LoRa to an inside Pico W. The inside Pico W publishes the data using MQTT. I haven't had any problems with this setup since it was implemented.

Nice solution to the WiFi limitations. I have not done anything with LoRa - I did recently see an news blip (perhaps teaser line for a youtube video) that hinted at LoRa being banned or something? Did you see or hear anything about that? Cheers Chris

Hi Chris, is it for performance reasons you decided to have topics labelled at the "Zoomie" level rather than including the Zoomie ID in the message payload ?

Hi Steve, If I understand your question correctly, I always work with MQTT using the Topic level. If I were to put the ID (of the receiver) at the msg level, every Zoomie would read every msg going to every Zoomie, then have to decode it to see if is for this Zoomie or one of the other ones. Each Zoomie can subscribe to topics and will only receive those topics and thus, putting the ID at that level seems to be the most efficient. Cheers! Chris
