When you choose a hatchet, look at the grain in the wood before you buy any hatchet or axe. You want the grain as inline with the blade as possible. If you look straight on to the blade and you see lines going from the top of the handle to the bottom you are good. If you see circles or continuous rings it has a good chance of splitting of the rings away as you hit.

This Hatchet is currently on Sale at Harbor Freight for $9.99 as of 1/27/23. The Harbor Freight Hatchet is the best Hatchet for the money. It's not close. Go through all the Hatchets and Axes and check the mounts and handles first and make sure it has the sheath on the end. Sometimes they fall off and they are on the floor if you need one. Or just take one from another hatchet.
