One of the bountiful edible resources that exists in the Great Plains is the Prairie Turnip. This edible was an essential part of Native American diet. It was first taxonomized by Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and his incisive description of the plant is still respected by experts. Please remember to do your own research about identification. Do not rely solely on this video or on Lewis' description.

If you find written sources from credentialed authors, you can develop the knowledge and confidence to safely engage in foraging. I am an amateur ethnobotanist myself, so everyone can forage safely and confidently if they are willing to put in the time to develop an “expertise” derived from expert sources.

I have lived on the Prairies for 64 yrs out of my 70 and I can honestly say I have in total not seen enough of them throughout my entire life to make a meal of them. As you mentioned they are found mostly at an elevation of 3500-6000. The highest Prairie region I have lived in is only at an elevation of 1200, the rest of the time I lived at sea level - on the Prairies.

I have also found locations that the population is so small I refuse to harvest them. Much of the prairie turnip population has been destroyed by urban development!
