Singles Going Steady counts because that was the only way to get those songs if you didn't have all the 45s. Wire's evolution from tight punk band to avant-garde post punk over three albums was unprecedented. And I agree that first Clash album and Rocket to Russia are the right choices

Great list (with a couple I need to check out based on your recommendation). My Top Ten would be: 1. In The City - The Jam 2. The Clash - The Clash 3. Damned, Damned, Damned -The Damned 4. Pink Flag - Wire 5. Another Music In A Different Kitchen - Buzzcocks 6. An Ideal For Living - Joy Division 7. Another Wasted Night - Gang Green 8. Inflammable Material - Stiff Little Fingers 9. Zontar Must Die - The Wombats 10. This Is The Modern World - The Jam Love to see you have the Virgin Records pressing of My Generation which is probably one of the (if not THE) best sounding versions of that album. Thanks for the video and keep ‘em coming!

Hey Timothy! I'm totally unfamiliar with the Wombats. Gotta check 'em out. I'm still working on finding a copy of Inflammable Material by SLF. I just have No More Heroes and Go For It on vinyl so far. The Jam are in my top 10 or top 20 favorite bands of all time, but I have a hard time throwing them into a punk list for whatever reason. I guess that first album is their punkiest. Joy Division would definitely be in my top 10 post-punk albums list if I do one! I'm a subgenre girl, and I know that's annoying lol. Take care, and see you next time! Glad you noticed this My Generation press behind me, too!

Hey Chuck! Thanks for the kind words. You said you're from Seattle. You still reside there? I don’t know how you do it, to be honest. There are so many punk records from each generation, from each year of every decade …phew!! I gravitate toward the obscure like Vacants “Television Viewer”, Ivy Green “S/T” and Nipple Erectors for the 70s pile. You should check out Abi Ooze, M.A.Z.E. The best album I heard in 1977 was rattus norvegicus by the stranglers. I was only 14 at the time and the bass and the keyboards were totally awesome. As far as I was concerned at that time the stranglers were classed as a punk band but my honest opinion was they were a great band who could write great tunes. Their follow up album no more heroes was equally superb. They were also the best live band I'd ever seen, and I've been watching the stranglers live from the first time I seen them in 1979 till this year 2022 and they are still a superb live band.

Great, fun video! Spooky! My list duplicates you on not only the bands, but the specific albums. Two bands (and albums) I might include are on the wall behind you: The Vibrators (pop punk right I would rank up there with the Buzzcocks) and the Undertones. I would also add Angry Samoans - Inside My Brain and Black Flag - Damaged from the early 80's. Finally, the Jam were one of my favorites, and I would pick Setting Sons. I like the Saints and need to revisit again. Ditto for the Damned. Also, I appreciate the recommendation on the Gits. I had heard about Mia Zapata, but not much about her band. Thank you for the recommendation on Pistol. I had seen an ad for it, but I haven't heard much about it. There is so much content on streaming! Finally, re your comments on the Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady (my pick also), I would point out that there are two versions of the first Clash album out there. The original one that was released in England and the US version, which I think was issued after their second album. It has a couple of their later singles. For me, it's jarring to hear those singles dropped in the original album, regardless of how great they are.

Thanks! This was a great list. All those records and bands are worthy of any top 10 list. On my personal list I would have the first Record by the Jam. I know not everyone considers them fully punk but they meant a lot to me at the time. I would also rate the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album ”L.A.M.F” highly; again not considered real punk by all but a great record. Then of course The Richard Hell album you had in the background is wonderful. Anyway I could probably come up with loads of others. The question is also if the Slits made punk music per se? Their album is fabulous too and a great influence. Just to say that was a great era and all those albums are splendid.

When considering the Clash, I have to say London Calling was one of the two most influential records of any genre in my entire life (John Coltrane's Giant Steps was the other). But when you want PUNK from the Clash, everyone points to the first album, but I think the lesser-known EP Black Market Clash actually roars a lot more forcefully.
@jodyvance1554
@jodyvance1554 Жыл бұрын
Wha...??? I love Black Market Clash, but not much of it is pure punk. It's more reggae/dub inspired stuff mostly. And there's several covers of non-punk songs that aren't even played like punk songs. Stuff by Toots Hibbert and Williams & Mitoo, not to mention a Booker T. & the MGs song. A lotta people consider only their 1st 1-2 albums to be punk records.

Good mid-morning to you. I think in terms of the analytics, that's true of anyone here on KZfaq. For me, it's four minutes at best. People get bored easily but only the hardcore fans will stay for the duration ;) Green Day, yes, I think that hooked a lot of people into Punk. I remember when it debuted and we got 30 copies of the CD in the Hastings where I worked. I wasn't at all surprised with your number one. I too love the Damned and they would be up there for me but I am really partial to their debut. Did Drastic Plastic do a pressing of Machine Gun Etiquette? Sex Pistols, that and the Ramones, are really people's foray into 70's Punk. Rocket to Russia is an essential to anyone's collection and thank for your recounting of the box set. For me, I started out with the Clash. They were really my first exposure to 70's punk although they really became more. I hadn't heard of the Saints until you mentioned them in a prior video. I still need to go off an sample them a bit. X-Ray Spex, is this the first time you are showing them? So I have heard of them by name only but I don't know their music. I really dig all female groups from that era. Buzzcocks and X...Hell Yeah!!! I would have been very surprised if they were not included. As with all your videos, more new stuff with the Gits. Hi Hanna, my list probably would be similar to yours. What sucks is if you didn't buy those records some years ago you'll probably have to pay a lot of money for a punk record nowdays, like I don't have The Saints for example and everytime I look for it price is too high. Other genres as expensive as punk and in high demand are post punk, metal (specially things like trash) and rock en español. I'm always looking for anything I can get my hands on from those 4 genres. So I made a list, not of my top ten punk albums but of something you might not see very often, the top ten punk bands with the best discographies, for me tose are: Damned, Ramones, Bad Religion, Fugazi, Clash, X, Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Crass , Green Day and Sleater Kinney. Yep, "chizzick" is right! I was a teenager in London when Punk emerged and Never Mind The Bollocks captures the times perfectly for me. A lot of social strife and the reason I consider Britain's "generation X" to be earlier than the official definition (Britain's lost, angry generation didn't create Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet!). I think the playing on NMTBx is great - a rebellion against the meaningless musicality of British rock at that time (as much as I love Pink Floyd, ELP, etc, rock had become safe and parent-friendly). The lyrics on that album contain so much of the things people from older generations would say at that time. In a way it's similar to the way Monty Python picked up on things people would say in everyday speech in the early 70s like "I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition" and "layabouts" (as captured in their Hell's Grannies skit mocking the way people talked about the youth of the day).

Mick - I can’t thank you enough for writing this. I could take a whole day to respond to all the insightful stuff here. My 8 year old loves a lot of this music and she loves Monty Python. There really is something special about the way early punk absorbs and critiques different accents and as an American I can still *feel* that, even if I don’t get the nuance. And then now, here in Chicago, there are 8 year old kids who are mocking their parents using exaggerated but still pretty accurate Brit accents (especially for kids!) based on Monty and thanks to you I can hear Johnny Rotten in there. And believe me, these kids have Johnny Rotten in them, and have no problem with that.

I know when the Clash debut they're reggae are they not I mean there's a reggae song on the album...the fall one of their albums 1st. song..... Gothic. 2nd. song on album.... Gothic. 3rd. song... Gothic. 4th. song.....etc..etc...

Steve Jones could play!

So could Glen Matlock who wrote/co-wrote all but two of the songs on Never Mind the Bollocks, recorded the bass on Anarchy, and was the exclusive bass player prior to finishing the recording of the album and worked out all the bass parts in concerts before they records the album. While Steve Jones played bass on most of the album you can’t deny Matlock was a very good bassist. Paul Cook is a very underrated drummer as well. Only Sid couldn’t play his instrument.

@@robm9999 hehe you're right, Matlock was a secret weapon as they went on. (but not for too long, alas). It's too bad Lydon couldn't have retained Glen for PIL, but then again he ended up with Jah Wobble, who is none too shabby on that bass! LOL

This made me cry. Machine Gun Etiquette is a stunning record. I heard it in 1981 at a party aged 14. It was the beginning of the rest of my life. You are not only right to put it at No1, you are TOTALLY right.

Thx for your reviews and insight. The PUNK genre will always have strong opinions. Personally I love Naked Raygun, Dead Kennedys, Ramones and Sex Pistols. Also FEAR and even early B-52s. Buzzcocks definitely Top 10!

1st time viewer. Love your back wall. Love your top tens. No arguments with wall or list , our libraries are similar. Your passionate explanations of each inspires me to revisit Machine Gun. Sniffers are a great new find. Thankful nod to the Saints. Old: The Fall-Live at the Witch Trials, The Skids - Scared to Dance. New(ish): Eddy Current Suppression Ring - s/t, Sprints - A Modern Job EP. Great vid!

Great selection, many of them are in my top 10 as well. Damned is definitely one of the greatest and while I might have gone for the debut I really see your point chosing Machine gun etiquette too as it’s right up there. Amazing songs on that LP. Saints were probably more popular in Europe, their albums are fairly easy to find in Sweden although prices has gone up in later years. Buzzcocks run of 45s were really brilliant so I totally understand you chose Singles going steady. A couple I think is missing in your list is The Heartbreakers and Dead Boys. 😉

Hannah.....it was me who told you about saying Chiswick wrongly. I was born in chiswick,london 😁 This was a fantastic video,I really enjoyed it 👍👍👍 It was great to see LPs I already own and a good few I want to own too . The two stars of the show for me were Los Angeles (behind you on display) and Frenching the bully. I remember when you originally showed that Gits LP in a video. It was truely horrifying what happened to that young lady,I need to try and find their documentary to watch. I've seen the Pistol biopic type series,I think the jury is going to be out for a long time on that one 🤔 I'm clueless when it comes to actors names etc... but both Johnny Rotten & Malcolm Maclaren were portrayed ok. They're mannerisms were pretty good. Great video....take care,all the best 👍👍👍

Hey Nick! Okay, 'twas you who informed me of the proper Chiswick pronunciation! Thank you! Love that you've been following my channel since the early days. Gits forever! And Anson Boon (?) played Johnny Rotten in Pistol, I believe, and his mannerisms definitely kept it amusing! I appreciate the comment and kind words! See you next time, and enjoy the weekend!

Great list, I love the LP's on your wall. The inclusion of Wire made this special along with your choices of the first Clash LP . I wish you were able to fell the vibe of NY in 1976 when The Heartbreakers ruled along with early Television, Mink DeVille, Dead Boys and Pere Ubu. Many punkers went to CBGB but Max's had a constant flow of bands they were known enough not to prove themselves at CBGB which was a proving ground for many bands. Glad to see no Talking Head LP's on your list. Great job for crawling back in time and coming up with the cream of the crop.

Hi David! Glad you were able to stop by and I had fun picking out some LPs to display behind me for this topic! You mentioned CBGB's. I picked up a pretty cool 2-LP comp at a record show over the weekend that I can't wait to show in an upcoming video! I love Talking Heads but I guess I don't consider them punk. Cheers!

Speaking of "Pistol" (which I haven't watched yet), I spent my gardening time last weekend listening to Steve Jones' re-launch of "Jonesy's Jukebox" in podcast format. Some of the interviews are new (Glen Matlock) while others are re-issues (Chrissie Hynde). Thus far, interviews released involve personalities who were Steve's contemporaries back in the day. Highly recommended! (BTW... first time listener to your channel - awesome stuff!)
