Just got my Panomatic Lunar last week. Of course the Platinum Lange is better in all aspects except the execution of the large date, but the value proposition doesn't even come close in my opinion. So while I am unwilling to stretch for the Lange now, I will happily sit on the GO while I save to buy the Lange comfortably. Even so, I have a dreaded uneasiness about the prospect of spending that much on a watch - this hobby may be radicalizing me.

Get the GO; you won't regret it. Maybe I'm getting up in years but no stainless steel watch is a dress watch. I know that's old school but many still subscribe to that notion. Enjoy, and as you say buy what you like.

Def. agree with the Omega over the Rolex, love the style of the Aqua Terra! BUT with my odd size wrist between 7- 6.75 inches i need a bracelet that has micro adjustments in the clasp, and the Aqua Terra doesn't have that...

I wanted to love my Aquaterras but I could not because of the thickness and the maddening polished center links that scratch when you look at them. My vintage Datejusts are pleasing in every way. My vintage Tudor prince date two tone is even more pleasing given the price.

It’s too late imo. The integrated watch hype has already peaked. Maybe they can cannibalize some of the Ingenieur sales from IWC if they price it lower but that still has the Genta heritage to compete with.

What you don't get is that the Constellation has been the single most popular range for Omega in Asia since its inception in 1952. The brand name held great prestige and was truly THE aspirational one, long before Rolex even became a thing. I should know; both my great grandfather and my grandfather, extremely successful men, owned and proudly wore their Constellations, even though they also owned other watches from the Trinity. Those Constellations continue to work perfectly, and are treasured and shared by the four men of the family of my generation. The Constellation was also extremely popular among the ladies. It was almost de riguer to gift a Constellation to a bride-to-be. My mother wore hers for many years till it was stolen..... In the Asian market, the Constellation has been Omega, pretty much. And this was decades before either the Speedmaster or the Seamaster became popular. The integrated bracelet model, with the signature "claws", originally known as the Manhattan, was introduced in 1982 and has been one of the mainstays of Omega in Asia since it was first introduced. It might not be obvious from a Euro- or US- centric perspective, but think about this: as far as you know, practically nobody in those markets buys a Constellation. Yet Omega has not only chosen to go on making and selling them, but also periodically update and redesign them. Would that make sense unless it has been selling somewhere?

As someone with experience with the Constellation Manhattan, I can tell you the watch strap that most stock comes with is hot and sweaty. Rubber with the leather insert gets hot. Sometimes the accuracy works, other times not, but eventually it evens out.

Yeah... I'm not that harsh on replica and homage brands. It doesn't bother me in the slightest - as long as it's not being passed off as the "real deal". I understand the argument that people should support brands that make original designs and I do think that should be the majority, but if you can go to H&M and buy what is ostensibly a replica of a haute couture design, then I don't see why you can't spend money on an homage if you want to.

Having bought the Pelagos 39 and a BB58, I wanted to try out the BB54. I bought the San Martin BB54 homage and found that it was more attractive than the Tudor. It has one problem, that being that the bezel action is too light.

Laco doesn't get a lot of attention, so I'd like to hear your view on them, especially their DIN 8330. The brand's flieger heritage is present in the hands and crown, the dial is clinical but that's played down by the quarter numerals, and the treatment of the steel adds to the tool aesthetic. And the date is at 4, so it doesn't break the numerals.

The ladies Constellation line is immensely popular in the middle east, Omega is a major competitor with Cartier for Queen of lady watches in the middle east…. if I am at the mall I will see dozens of Constellations each outing. In fact my wife chose the Constellation over Cartier and owns two tone versions both with diamonds. My wife doesn’t like the datejust, however in solid 18k Gold she would…lol

It is my understanding the the Constellation is very popular in Asia. Definitely different tastes and preferences in different regions. I also hear that Russia used to be a big market for a lot of the oversized and more ostentatious watches by American/European standards, and companies like Ulysse Nardin got hit hard as luxury business pulled out of Russia due to the war in Ukraine.
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch 9 күн бұрын
True on Asia and the constellation. Was not aware of the Russian angle for the watches you mentioned. It’s been a while since I last was in Russia but come to think of it - whenever I’ve been abroad and stumbled into russians (ie in dubai),, it has struck me that at least the wealthy russians seemed to have a different taste in watches - UN definitely being more common than I would have expected. Sam Martin GMT vs Christopher Ward C63. Is it worth 3x the price?
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch 9 күн бұрын
Good question. I have a video coming about San Martin watches in general (no specific model). The C63 has a better movement. The QC is better. The warranty is better. The design is original whereas most San Martins are replicas/homages. The originality definitely has a value that is hard to quantify. If you boil it down to pure specs and build quality, then 3x is probably steep, but it is that originality and the intangibles that make a difference 😊😊

Very interesting takes, thank you. I think you were very fair with San Martin. I see other micros basically ordering batches of watches made to order, likely manufactured by the folks behind San Martin and Steeldive. It's a pure sourcing exercise. A pure money grab, imho. For a little less one can get a San Martin direct and cut out the middle man, or for a little more a true, fledgling micro with some innovation and sophisticated design. All the best.

My recent purchase is a serica blue diver, what to you think about it? Personally I love it, so much so that I struggled to swap it out to other divers (Seiko, sinn, citizen, Rolex...) for rotation with the exception of the muhle glashutte sar. Yes I do like something a little less mass market. I find this serica well built, unique design unlike most others within the genre with lots of vintage vibe, the bracelets is ingenious for comfort, great smooth bezel action, soothing touch with the pastel colours bezel....there isn't a thing that I dislike.

I got a watch from Aliexpress, with a on the fly adjust bracelet, box sapphire with great distortions, decorated high beat ETA Seagull movement that runs great and the watch looks pretty much just like the blue Seaq, just with a fully lumed blue beezle and smaller size than the original. Besides this watch, I got mainly German, Swiss and Japanese watches. Ussualy ones with loads of heritage. I do really adore this chinese watch though, love it for what it is, also for under 2% of MSRP for what it is styled after, with a few differences like a onion crown, yeah, it's a winner.

I own the Seiko with the rock face dial and I love it. The bracelets though are very uncomfortable 🥴

Love to hear your thoughts on the Citizen Tsuyosa automatics, and their quality for the price. The dials are eye catching, and much lower in price then a Rolex Oyster Perpetual or Omega Aqua Terra.

Be curious about your ruminations on the continuum from replica to homage to derivative. Prompted by your discussion of San Martin as a replica maker, and also the openness of CW about how The Twelve is derivative from AP's Royal Oak.. It seems to me that a lot of what passes for original (among the Europeans) is actually derivative and self-referential) and some of what are called replicas (from the Chinese) are actually homages. Your thoughts?

@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch I'd look forward to it. My personal curiosity was piqued in the relatively benign sector of inexpensive motorsports themed watches (not the Daytona/MilleMiglia/Monaco tier, the tier defined by my $100 quartz watch from carwatchguys that has a dial just like the wheels of my Alfa Giulia, right down to the yellow brake calipers).

Thank you for mention of Seiko SPB121. It’s on my wish list. My question is about the Perpetual brand from China with its very fancy $500 chronographs that look like the, for me, completely unattainable Swiss “equivalent “…. What is your take on them?

The Omega Aqua Terra is unnecessarily thick, I’d take a DJ over it every day and twice on a Sunday.

@Mike, sir I own the GO pano lunar. I would say changing the strap vastly changes the style of the watch. I bought the artem sailcloth strap in dark blue (to match the moon phase) and it becomes smart yet casual. I can wear it on casual Fridays at work but also Mon to Thurs in office wear. I have a 2023 pepsi and sub, but in my heart I love the GO pano lunar as it’s so beautiful n diff due to the layout. Only downsides are that yes it always gets compared to the big brother lange and you face a steep depre if brand new. But I buy the watch to enjoy n keep so the downsides dun matter for me.

Thanks for sharing - Realy interesting to hear. I'll have to ask at the ad if I can try it with another strap, because my mind so clearly sees it as a dress watch 😊😊

Kith? 1.500 dollars. I hate the pricing. I dislike them intensely. At moonswatch pricing I would likely like them. Nostalgia is fine. 1.500 is bananas 😊😊

What are your thoughts on quality 3rd party watch bands vs OEM? Which brands (3rd party and OEM) justify the high prices? Any go-to 3rd party brand recommendations? Would you put an OEM strap on a different brand watch?
