In nearly anyone else's hands, the Undertaker gimmick would've failed miserably. But Mark Calloway committed 100% to it, and did things that truly sold the otherworldly nature of the character. His Michael Myers sit-up spot, his "Old School" walking across the top rope that you never really saw anyone else do and seemed utterly impossible for someone his size to do, and his ability to rework the character over the years to keep it interesting all helped. It's also great that WWE were able to back him up with the theatrics that enhanced the performance. I went to a Heart Attack Tour show in (I think) 1995 when he was feuding with Yokozuna, and I swear they must've turned on the AC in the arena right when he came out to give everyone in the place an appropriate deathly chill.

Yo what about Sting? He literally goes from Surfer Dude to Brandon Lee look alike in a span of a few years and it was a huge angle for WCW. A drastic shift like that’s pretty insane right?

Actually, it was more like New Day morphed from Gospel-style power-of-positivity faces which everybody hated, to annoying heels that people eventually grew to love, to breakfast-food-loving, nerd-culture-obsessed faces.
