Sales Engineering and PreSales is a vague role. Different organizations have different perceptions of what Sales Engineering is, what Sales Engineers should be doing.
Because of that, there are many misconceptions about Sales Engineering, as well as myths and lies about this role. And depending on who the SEs report to, these myths can be perpetuated by the leadership team.

When I had my first Sales Engineer role, the most my Sales Engineering team did was copy/paste a pre-written Bash script/command to startup an integration. It was mind-blowing because the things I heard prior to it were false.

Yes, yes, yes. Great vid. You don’t have to be an extrovert. I’m an ambivert too. Btw, Simon Sinek is too. Coding isn’t mandatory (unless special cases - Databricks is a good case-in-point), creative problem solving is a must-have though. Being a partner of the Sales Exec is a constant challenge. A lot of bad mindset and attitude out there. Sales Execs love to use the phrase - my sales engineer 😂

Great video! Don't worry if you are an introvert or extrovert - be a CONVERT! Have belief in your solution and let that belief show to the audience. Any pure engineer who thinks Sales Engineering is easy I would love to put them in front of an audience and see how many seconds it takes before they lose their cool and blame the customer and rant about how dumb everyone is. If it is so easy, a pure engineer should easily have a 100% win rate and make millions, right?

The term "engineering" is a broad term, the problem is that most people stick the term to some specific roles such as computer engineering or software engineering And they forget that the term is way broader than these areas

Hi Ansari, I've actually mostly seen it from the other end where mechanical or civil say if you don't know how this mechanical thing works, you're not an engineer. I don't think that matters though. I'm not a lawyer, but as I understand it, an engineer (any engineer) is only an engineer if he or she has a degree in engineering, and is part of a professional organization, for example: Professional Engineers Ontario. So if there is someone with a business degree who is now selling SaaS to business folks, they cannot call themselves Sales Engineers even though they are doing a sales engineering role. That all being said, there are so many ways around it.
