Is Presales for me?
The role of Presales is going through a boom right now. Many more people know about it, there are a lot more resources talking about it, and everybody I talk to wants to give it a try.
But is it for you? Presales / Sales Engineering is difficult. There are a lot more cons that we don't talk about, or we simply make jokes about.
As for me personally, I love the role, warts and all. However here are some of the cons of this role, so you can walk into it with your eyes open.

Pre-sales is a good career as long as management doesn't combine it with technical/engineering responsibilities. I quit a job because I was being asked to write tons of code with a rigid deadline while also being asked to randomly join sales calls. It was pure stress.

I agree, not all orgs are created equal. Neither are managers, teammates or many other factors that can affect our role. This is something we need to figure out in the interview process. The problem is early on in our career, we don't know what we need to figure out. I hope you found a role that you enjoy!

Oh, and by the way: A big negative can be just being in sales. Think account meetings or stressed out VPs of Sales. That can be the reason of a far too high anxiety rate or blood pressure

Thanks Patrick! I think the pros far outweigh the cons, so if you ever want to get back into the field, you should. That being said, you have a wealth of knowledge and it would be best if you continue doing what you're doing :)

Thanks for the video, I have an upcoming 2nd zoom interview with a cloud based company that offers ERP, HCM and SCM products. They would like for me to do a 20 - 30 min technical pre-sales presentation on any topic and I am struggling to come up with one.. any idea where to find a resource that can help with this?

Hey, is there any software that you love? Could be for a personal hobby. Or at least think you can show well? I know people who have demos google maps or slack. I've personally demos x.ai which is a calendar booking tool. The options are limitless, which could be the problem. Message me on linkedin if you're looking for personalized help.

IF we have a contract with a customer for 1 year, and after 1 year the customer would like to renw for 1 year more, is the renewal amount countable in the quota or not, I mean in general how it will be if the answer was as per company policy?

That is dependent on the company. In general, if there is a Customer Success Team, then the quota goes to them. If it's the Sales team taking care of that, then the amount is countable towards them. There are options in between as well.

I'm an introvert, and I love this job. There are some challenges, and I need to be able to turn it own when I'm meeting with customers. But if you don't want to deal with people, that's pretty much all you're doing. You have to deal with customers, account managers, support, etc

You are correct, it was a mock demo, with our Management team being the "customer" I hope I'm not giving off car salesman vibes 😀 The goal is to highlight that Sales Engineering is not for everybody
