Special thanks to the Boone County Antique Tractor Club for using their dyno to test the PTO horse power of Johnny X (Turbo charged Deere 1025R), our 2021 JD 1025R and their John Deere Model A. Can you guess which tractor has the most pto power?

Dad’s JD dealership had an M&W dyno back in the ‘60’s primarily used to put a load on rebuilt engines to help seat the rings. M&let back then was also known for selling parts for increasing power including Power Blocks and Turbo Kits.

When I heard you mention “M&W” I immediately recalled waaay back, that farmers when they would overhaul their tractors they would use M&W pistons and rings for “more power!” M&W had quite a good reputation for overhaul parts and tractor performance. Fun to watch the dyno and see Johnny X power up. What an amazing increase in PTO power. Let’s hope it holds together 😉. Blessings.

I have a JD 50...pretty much a newer B. Grandpa gave it to me before he died. The independent wheels on the trike front end is a HUGE improvement. I don't use it much, but I do love it. They do have a great sound, and it is a pretty pleasant ride just tooling around. Every couple years I'll hook up a sickle mower and cut a couple acres. The newer tractors (and seats!) sure are appreciated after a few hours in the older iron!

@@jonathonschram3429 I wish my dad would have kept some, but to him it was just a tractor. Still have the old Massey but think it broke a rod. Just don't have a place to tear into it out of the weather. We also had an old Allis Chalmers crawler. Can't remember the model. Absolutely loved that little thing. Wanted to restore it it but came home one day and dad had sold it lol.

@@doclull1989 yeah, it's tough with some of the old iron. I kept the jd 50, Oliver Super 88, and a MF industrial (needed it for actual work around our farm). He had a bunch of Oliver's, but I just couldn't justify dragging them all out to my place. My brother kept the 55, which was my favorite of the bunch to be honest. Like you, I didn't have the time or space to keep up with them all. Now I'm finally getting around to building a bigger shop (140x72), I wish I would have held on to more of them! Most of our equipment now is orange and I just don't see my kid (6) ever being as excited over an mx5200. He loves the JD and our Ferguson to30 though! Just knowing what those old timers endured on is amazing though. Grandpa told me he put 11,000hrs on an Oliver Super 77 in something like 7 or 8 years. My back was hurting after tooling around in it in a few hours pulling hay rack rides at the county fair! I imagine the Super 88 would be even worse given the fact it could pull a bigger implement even faster through a field. Times sure have changed.

Excellent video Tim. Always love seeing Johny X in action. I sure hope to get a turbo kit someday for my Gen 2, 2025R. That Turbo sounds Oh Sooooo Gooooood !!!!!!! I think this demonstrates quite well why when given a choice, I tend to always recommend a turbo charged tractor if any sort of heavy PTO work is planned. I have seen this in real world mowing applications comparing the likes of a 3033R non turbo to a 3039R turbo and how the Turbo can really help power through thick heavy grass where the non turbo would always stall out.

The equipment they used to test engine HP at the Nebraska trials/tests resembles more of a wagon that had a cab on it to house the operator and the equipment for the test. The way it worked was it applied break pressure on the wheels to give resistance to the tractor. The system had to work on a paved surface with a calculated resistance of friction. The HP like the dyno told the operator how many flb of pressure was applied to the brakes, along with the known weight of the trailer, the degree of coefficient of friction of the pavement then told me after calculations the estimated HP of the tractor. If you would think of it this way to simplify the system it was like a weight sled at a tractor pull. The difference being the hydraulic brakes provided the load rather than the counter weight on the sled. Of course a tractor pull is done on a dirt track, so the coefficient of friction is less based on the degree of compaction of the soil.

The field across the road, from the house I grew up in, used to be farmed by a guy using John Deere 2 cylinders. This was up to around 1985. Don't remember the exact models, but thinking one was a 70 or 720 and the other a 60 or 620. Both were tricycle fronts. The larger one would be working ground, while the second was pulling the four row planter across the ground. There were times the putt, putts of the two tractors would sync up for a bit and really sound good. He later on moved up to a couple 4020 John Deeres.

Tim here is an idea, it's just one of my many dumb ideas I come up with daily, I dont have any idea if it is a good idea. Have you thought about having a tractor school maybe on the weekends, may be a 1or 2 day class on how to operate a 1025r attachment's, maintenance and easy common repairs. It could be more hands on, where the people could operate a backhoe, plow and other implement's, and attachments. No charge for the idea, like your videos. Could be a money maker for you if you get like 10 students at once , but maybe they would be tearing up your machinery . Maybe have the school once a year or when ever you have the time and enough students.

What is or was the idea with the narrow front wheels on tractors in the US? In US vintage shows (that I've only seen on KZfaq) the '3 wheeler' layout seems to be considerably more common than here in the UK. When was that common? Is it just an older style that predates the Fergies I've grown up with over here (as already vintage tractors on our farm that were/are still being used, small 'hobby' farm (now) that was a midsized farm when the Fergies were new that didn't grow 'with the times') so pre 50's, or was it just an engineering choice that better suited the US farmer's needs, where we needed more stability for farming more hilly terrain or something similar?

Hello all ! Well, I'm getting old (Scoop!) and my good old JD 310 is becoming less convenient to access... I'm considering buying an easier-to-access, hydrostatic model (I tasted it with my LT155 Lawn Tractor and I appreciate it!). But, I want to keep doing my hay in small bales with my Kuhn GMD 44 mower, my Someca 1320 baler with a bale consolidator. => If the 310 does not struggle with these materials, would a modern tractor, type JD 1025, 2025, Solis 26, Kioti 28 be capable of it? This video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jddzgdefyaeup5c.html) testifies to the fact that a 1025 is capable of driving a section mower (which does not require any power, in my opinion...) but what about of a 4-disc mower? => This other video suggests that a 22hp achieves this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLViqaic3LKYoX0.html I found this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbZ0m92UztGYj2Q.html which testifies to the fact that a JD 1025 would be able to take my baler... But, some of my land is on a slope (nothing very strong, but, well, the 310 weighs 2t, the 1025 weighs 700kg, with a ladle, while the press is given for 980 kg...). In addition, I share their questions about the resistance of the PTO clutch: I can clearly hear, on the 310, the stresses exerted by the press piston... The 1025 is sold for 24hp and 17hp at the PTO, while the 310 is given for 32hp (I looked for the power at the PTO of the 310 without finding anything...). So, I seek your advice, can a recent 25cv replace my aging 32cv? Should we aim for the same power on a recent tractor? Your opinions would be valuable to me! Thanks in advance...

I think you would be better off with a 3R for those tasks…especially coming from a 310. I usually recommend folks downsizing to stop at the 3R. You still get great maneuverability, but you get enough power to accomplish goals easily. 3039r or 3046r would be my recommendation. The videos you reference show the 1025r doing those tasks, but it is pushing the limits. Make sense?
