FOREST OF DEAN WALK FEATURING MITCHELDEAN, HARROW HILL AND THE WYSIS WAY
"Mitcheldean and Harrow Hill”
Filmed 12th July 2018
Post-production completed 14th September 2018
I never did any walks around Mitcheldean in the Forest of Dean, so today I decide to do so for the first time. I explore the small town with its fantastic church and walk to the nearby village of Harrow Hill, where its church sits on a hillside dominating the skyline…..
Filmed in the Forest of Dean in the county of Gloucestershire. Locations include Mitcheldean, Mitcheldean Meend, Harrow Hill, Harryhill Plantation and the Wysis Way. This is part of the series of films in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

Lovely little film, living close to where it finishes, we often walk up this hill. On a clearer day, there are marvellous views both down to the River Severn and across to May Hill and the Malvern Hills too. We're very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country.

I lived on Harrow Hill 40 years ago, until my parents moved us to Cornwall when I was 11. Of all the places I have lived (and there are many) It's the one on harrow Hill that I wish I could move back too....................... Great video

You did make us laugh with your Attempted Jumping of the tree .....Another Wonderful twenty minutes escape for us ,Loved the Church at Mitcheldean....with its Needle like spire ... and of course you spoiled me with the Forest Church too....Another highlight was the stone carvings ,espesh ,the one which resembled the easter island heads ... Thank you once again Patrick ,you never disappoint.......Take care Frank & Lee........

Ha ha well after I had shot those various attempts to jump that tree I thought it would be worth editing the three takes into the finished film to provide some amusement, so I'm pleased that worked! Knew you'd love the churches of course, and there will be more to see in the future that have similar spires. I agree that some of those stones do look like the ones from Easter Island. As always Frank and Lee thank you for commenting and for watching. Cheers, Patrick :)

You're right Patrick it was a wonderful walk, and a lovely old town too. Another beautifully made film. Unlike you I would have needed a stunt double,or some clever editing for the log across the path scene. Thanks again, really enjoyed that. Pete.

Some more info hidden in dusty books. Before the A4136 existed the main road into Wales left Mitcheldean climbing up the Stenders. It then used the track that Patrick walked on his way to Harrow Hill. A toll house in Mitcheldean recorded the tolls as the second largest anount in the UK.

It's always a pleasure to return to your videos Patrick. Somehow you manage to make the countryside look so spectacular and inviting. You did a good job here. I agree it's great to meet friendly people - it's what makes a walk special. The old boy sounded great. Just one of them chats that would put a smile on my face as I continued. I could see one on you. Nice to end with the stones. I wonder if any of the youngsters will visit in 20-30 years time and remember fondly their contribution. Maybe! Well, your contribution to KZfaq was again top rate. Take care Patrick. Until next time all the best. Mark

Hi Mark, yes I pretty pleased with this one. It was lovely to chat to some of the local people in Mitcheldean, who were genuinely interested in seeing me filming their town. I do find that in a lot of places I get looked at with suspicion when I'm out and about with my camera and tripod, so this was a refreshing and pleasurable change. That old guy was really lovely, pity there wasn't more time to chat really. Those stones were amazing, I just saw them in a field and just managed to capture those shots from a distance as they were fenced off. Well Mark, great as always to hear from you and thank you so much for your lovely comments again. All the best to you. Cheers, Patrick :)

Yes, people can look upon us people filming and talking strangely Patrick. It's nice they boosted your confidence a little. I know what that feels like as well as the chat. I like to look out for chat going about my business in the city. A check out girl - tourist - anyone. I do like it! Them stones reminded me of some stones in Scotland. Very imposing. Have a good one....

I love the way you speak to people when you do your films Mark, which I'm not confident in doing, and you ask people if they don't mind the camera. I remember seeing some great people talking in your videos, that lady who closed down her pub after so many years springs to mind. Peace to you and have a good one too :)

One of my own walks this ..I grew up in Mitcheldean Often I return there during summertime and catch up with the old boyz! But having been living away over 30 years now and traveled much around the world I see Mitcheldean from a different perspective and I now find it fascinating! It is an unspoilt and unique area of the world Great to come back and enjoy a valuable sense a affinity and many memories! Not sure how you navigated that last decline back toward the village as I couldn't get through the wild overgrowth on the track .. about the same time in 2018 Easter Island statues may be interesting but ugly.. they don't fit into Mitcheldean heritage and stand out as odd up on the hill there.. please grow trees around them! Contact me for more discussion on Mitcheldean or if anyone has some very old photographs I'd appreciate that!

Excellent, very enjoyable video as always Patrick. We live in the Peak District too, and we have never visited the Forest of Dean. It looks really interesting. One thing I've been meaning to ask - are you still in touch with any of the Bristol guys from the early videos? Michael and Nigel where a couple of names if I recall correctly (it's been a while since I watched your early videos, so I may have got the names wrong).

Thank you my friend, worth getting down there if you can, although we both live in a great place too of course :) I'm not in touch with the Bristol guys as much as I'd like living so far away from them now. I've seen Nigel now and then, normally at Christmas, but not seen Michael for a long time, hopefully it won't be too long before we catch up again :)

Ah ok - well it is really difficult to keep in touch with friends when they are so far away, so I'm not surprised you've lost touch with them a bit. By the way Patrick, if I'm ever over Matlock way I'll buy you a pint! All the best, Terry.
