Do you drive a car? Do you wanna save yourself quite a bit of time and effort in the winter months? In most parts of the world, winter means snow, frosty weather, hot chocolate…and an ordeal for drivers. Changing the tires, cleaning snow and ice off the car in the morning, defogging the windshield and windows - and the list goes on and on.
You wake up one fine winter morning to find your windshield perfectly frozen. Breaking the winter spell can take a while, and it’s especially painful if you’re in a rush to get to work or school. There’s an easy home solution for you. Mix vinegar with water in a 3:1 ratio, and spray this solution onto clear windows to prevent them from getting icy overnight. One easy way to fix a frozen car lock is by using regular hand sanitizer. The alcohol in it will remove the ice and allow you to unlock your car. If you want to know what other tricks are, watch our new video!

SUMMARY:
- In a spray bottle, mix the following ingredients: 20 fl oz of rubbing alcohol, 6.7 fl oz of water, and 1 drop of dish detergent. Spray the mixture onto the icy windows, and the ice will melt away.
- Socks on windshield wipers might sound like a name for an indie pop band, but it’s actually a quick way of preventing your wipers from freezing to the windshield. First trick: leave them in a raised position as you park overnight.
- To keep a car lock from freezing, try spraying a little WD-40 into the keyhole. If you take a moment to do this simple procedure before the cold days of winter hit, you’ll save yourself a lot of trouble!
- It turns out that using a regular cooking spray that can be found in any supermarket will help you forget about this pesky problem. Just spray it onto the rubber seals on the top, side, and bottom of car doors, and rub it in with a paper towel.
- The kitty litter will absorb moisture and prevent fog from ever happening. A word to the wise - never leave open water bottles or other drinks in your car overnight.
- To avoid ice on side mirrors, you can cover them overnight with plastic bags fitted in place with rubber bands. When you take off the plastic bags the following day, you’ll see that the mirrors are free of ice, and you won’t have to clean them!
- Clean the headlights thoroughly of any dirt, and let them dry. Then apply a thin layer of wax. This will prevent snow and moisture from accumulating on your lights, and you’ll be able to get wherever you need to go safely this winter.
- The US Marine Corps Winter Survival Course Handbook recommends that you keep enough water and some food (mostly dry snacks) in your car during the winter months.
- The last thing you want when you’re driving in the cold is your vehicle’s engine failing. To prevent that from happening, keep your gas tank at least half full.
- It might sound obvious, but still - parking in a garage or under or near something big (like a tree or building) will keep your car warmer overnight and help you start it more easily in the morning.
- It’s a good idea to keep a couple of bags of kitty litter in your trunk. If your car becomes stuck in hard snow or ice, sprinkle some cat litter in front of the tires, and you’ll get out of that mini crisis easily.

If your vehicle is outside during a snowstorm get a shower curtain and cover the windshield. This will also cover the wipers. Hold it in place by folding the excess curtain inside the vehicle and then closing both front doors. For the side mirrors I’ve been using old supermarket plastic bags. I’ve done this for over 20 years. So far it has worked every single time.

What cracks me up about people who are stuck in a snow bank is how every one of them focuses their attention on the drive wheels - stones, cat litter, newspaper, etc. Very few think it through. The majority of the time it's the non-drive wheels that are holding them back. No one ever seems to REALLY clear the path in front and behind them. Once those are done then go to the drive wheels and focus your efforts there. I've done this for 35 years and it always works. I've helped a lot of people get out of snowbanks as well,most of whom are puzzled until they find themselves out. Then they see the obvious sense of it.

@@rogerridgway7083 Are you describing locking the wiper straight outward which he called his "first trick?" If so, why would you need the sock? Not sure what you mean by "locking the blades", but every car that I've owned had blades that will stay put if you move them as far away from the windshield as you can.

keeping the wipers position up is not recommended. It will, in time, make the spring not as tight and the wipers won't be sticking close enough to the windshield
@rickoshay6554
@rickoshay6554 5 жыл бұрын
@@rogerridgway7083We're both talking about the same thing. There is a toggle mechanism built into the hinge of the wiper arm. When the arm is lifted away from the windshield and passes the toggle point, the arm snaps upward and locks into the position shown in the photo at 2:00 on the left. When the arm is pressed downward (past the toggle point), the spring holds the wiper against the windshield.

One more trick I learned last winter. When ice storm is coming in, cover the cab with a tarp or blanket. If you use a blanket be warned it will get heavy and harder to remove. But if that's all you got, use it. Both will keep ice from building up on the glass. Open one door a bit and tuck the tarp around the door putting the loose end inside, then shut the door. Drape the tarp over the door and across the windshield and other door, open that door and tuck the tarp inside and shut the door. The only thing that makes it difficult is wind so be ready for that.
@trish5805
@trish5805 4 жыл бұрын
The tarp is a great idea! I use a giant tarp too. I open the hatchback and tuck it in before closing, then I tuck it in tight in the open doors before closing them and I make sure that the windshield wipers are under it and the mirrors on the side. Super easy clean up. Pull the tarp to one side, all of the snow goes in that direction and I can clean it up later!

Winter wipers ..They dont freeze Order your snow tires 1 month before It normally snows in your area ..otherwise wait 6 days in a line up of customers and higher prices...Even smarter Buy your winter tires in April when they are on sale ..sometimes 50% off Change your Anti freeze I do my own change to a 60 / 40 mix that extra 10% more anti-freeze is do up to -45C -64F Extreme cold i have a engine block heater plug in which keeps the engine oil warm Remote starter : with the Heater on I start my truck in the morning 10 mins before i go out ...Engine is warm Windows are defrosted and Snow removel is easy Inside it toasty warm Best snow tires ..Having the best tires adds to the safety factor of being able to move forward and stop But also being able to turn when needed I put on a set of Blizzak snow tires And use my 4-wheel drive Never have any issues in winter driving ..snow and ice In Canadian winters ..plowed or un plowed roads Always have a phone charger and a phone handy This sometimes is better than a "winter kit" knowing help is a call away If you live country side Than also having a warm blanket reduces freezing problems ...Oh and forget mats as a way to get out of being stuck ..rubber loves to slide on ice

The best reason for keeping a full tank that the moisture in the air will condense into the fuel...leading to water in the gas and possible fuel line freezeup.If you want to confirm this just ask any pilot (there are more flyers than you think).

All these preventative things to do when you can just do the first step to everything else. If the water, vinegar, and dish soap will melt the ice, then you can just spray it on the lock, windshield wipers, headlights, side-view mirrors, etc. Seems a lot easier than wrapping every peripheral object around the car.

In Finland, it can easily be in the winter of -25 to 30 degrees Celsius. Some of these instructions were probably quite functional. However, I press the button (my keychain) 10-20 (Depends on how cold it is) minutes before departure and the car is melted and warm when I leave (thanks to Webasto). Also, the seats (front and rear), windows (front and rear) and mirrors are heated. So without the Webasto, the mirrors and the windows melts quickly.

We live in rural western Canada where 6 year olds know this stuff, but I watched it anyway because I needed a laugh. If your car is in any kind of shape it should start even at -30, but maybe not -40. We have engine block heaters which work when it gets to -18 or so. Today Nov 24 20 we are right at -9 I'll tell you, you'll never hurt your starter in 10 seconds cranking if its really cold, the battery quits first.

I have an old blanket with velcroe straps which go around my door handles. This covers the wind shield and side mirrors as well as part of the side windows. I undo the straps before starting the car but leave it in place for a few moments to warm the air around the engine. When I take it off, I put it into the rear seat area and can use it if needed. When I get home I put the blanket back in place before I go into the house so I don't forget it later. I have thought of making one to fit the whole top of the car so the rear window is clear in the mornings also. My wife says that could be a sellable idea, what would anyone else think ??

Don’t try these tips out. These things mostly can work. For example, putting a sock on a windshield wiper would get the sock stuck and basically wouldn’t even keep the wiper warm.

Putting rubbing alcohol and water and a drop of dishwashing liquid and putting bags on your side mirrors and putting in cat litter inside your car and outside if you get stuck in snow and putting socks on your windshield wipers and I learned also to put at least two drops of hand sanitizer on your key or inside the the lock on your car door I learned quite a bit from these tips thanks

Wax on headlights and windows on the outside. Shaving cream on the inside (smells good too)

WD40 is not recommended to be used on car locks. It is water based. Water freezes. Liquid wrench is silicone based and will not freeze. It is much better to use it on locks.

1.Put little sillical gel pouches under your windshield, they will absorb some moisture and reduce the frosting inside your car 2.Leave your car in the garage... 3. Never leave your house during the winter. 4. Move to a warmer place. 5. Become a mechanic so you can fix anything for the part cost only... Wrote this in 2 minutes. Can I work at your company?

Just lifting your wiper blades will stop them from icing up in most cases. We use to do this to the cars on our car lot that I worked at. They will also not get frozen to the windshield. The sock covers will help but it’s not always needed.

No, in most parts of the world, winter doesn't mean snow... But if you do live in a place blessed with real winter, here's one weird trick: Get a real car with 4 wheel drive, studded tires, engine heater, and a fresh battery. Success!

I’ve used my floor mats one too many times. Lol. This year I will put a bag of kittie litter in my trunk. I have a four wheel drive but our snow is so wet here that even my truck has problems.

Judy Brown Thanks. People don’t get it. I was born in Alaska. The snow was fluffy and you could drive through several feet no problem. I now live in Kentucky. It’s so wet and compact here it’s like driving on ice always.
