Sewing with faux fur may seem intimidating. But, it's actually pretty easy. You have to pay attention to a few details and take some extra precautions, but once you have them down, it's really a breeze.
See my tips for sewing with fur.

Btw artists who make bears etc from faux fur sort of shave the seam allowance so that the fur doesn't get sewn in.

Using glue to flatten seam allowances is a great idea. When I use glue on fabric I I find it helpful to put on a weight the area so it totally sticks on the reverse side. Gorgeous make!

I still have 2 of my Mother's one sided razor blades made in US she used when working on real fur! She was a seamstress/tailoress working from home and in a Tailors. She never ever used scissors on fur, real fur in those days, which she hated with a vengeance, but it was what brought the money in! She always cut from the back of the fur with her razor. Scalpels are probably easier to hold, but when I was a child, only a Dr used one of those, not a seamstress/tailoress! If she worked on furs in her sewing room at home, I never ever recall seeing fur lying around. I've told many Vloggers this tip, now they pass it on as their own, well, the credit isn't mine, it was hers and those like her, who worked on fur yet hated furs, ironic! I think when wearing fur became such an issue, working with real fur was almost a forgotten skill. As of course, when I was a child only the very wealthy wore furs, so skilled people were required to work on them. She used a 3 sided shaped needle too for furs and leather, both for hand and machine sewing. I still have one of those too! With faux furs being so popular and good faux fur easy to buy. It's a good tip to remember.

It's beautiful on you. I'm impressed with your taking on this project. I also like the idea of using what looks like small granite tiles to hold the fabric down. Kenneth D King has a new short Threads video where he shows the tools and materials he uses when cutting and sewing fake fur. e.g. Dollar Store type brushes and combs, an awl when sewing the seams, Cold Tape to hold the fabric in place, a cutting blade specifically designed to cut fake or real fur, a vacuum. I hope this helps.

Great tips Lindsay 😊 Like many of the other commenters I was about to suggest cutting the backing with a blade instead of cutting with scissors. Another tip to reduce bulk is that you can shave your seam allowances before construction using an electric shaver (but I wouldn't recommend letting anyone use it for body/face shaving after!). You just need to be careful not to cut the pile of the fur that's left. Love your jacket, looks perfect for Autumn!

Don't shake the fur outside, you're releasing a ton of micro plastic pieces into the environment that won't break down and can't be cleaned up. Just vacuum it so it'll end up in a dump instead.

Love the way you presented these tips, Lindsey and it was nice to see Sonny too! Can you share some info about your pattern weights? Are they marble or granite pieces from a home improvement store or actual pattern weights? Thanks!!

Yes!! They are backsplash or bathroom tile from Home Depot. They came on a 12x12 mesh backing. So I had to peel them off that and used goo gone to get the glue off.

Thank you very much for the useful tutorial! Is it bad that it bothers me that all those tiny pieces of plastic fur are going into the environment? :( Should we maybe try to dump them into plastic waste?

Depends on the backing of the fur but you’d be fine with a 90 I think. Test it out though. Maybe need larger.
