Let's talk about investing into equipment for the job. Should you buy used or new? Maybe there is a reason someone sold that 10 year old truck. Could it be because it wasn't profitable anymore? Or could you be putting thousands into your pocket?

Even after 4 engines its still significantly cheaper than buying a new truck, let alone it lacks all the emissions things which are expensive to repair, if the DEF system failed in your current truck and you had to replace the components that are not covered under warranty, or its out of warranty (provided you dont delete it) you are probably spending as much to replace the components as it took to rebuild his motor.

I stated in a 91 12 valve cummins, ran that bitch 19 hours a day, 6 days a week within 150mi radius. I averaged $800-900/mo in repairs plus the down time. Not brand new, but newer trucks with low miles are the best value for hotshotting.

Be honest, is the IFS on that Duramax truck a smoother drive than the Ford's solid front axle? I hear people rag on the Rams for the rough front axle, I'm curious about the Ford. I know the new Ford has factory creature comforts, but you can add incredible creature comforts yourself to an older truck and still be way below that new truck cost. And adding power to an older Duramax is notoriously easy and cheap. U can match the Ford's power with stock internals and less than 10k in addons with pro labor

Thired.... Your saying this to a guy who tows his backhoe, forklift, hauls steel, and started my welding jobber out of a 94 f150 i bought when i was 14 for 900 bucks, its on its 2nd motor/trans 518,000 miles on the clock, 350,000ish of those were me being dumb, and beating the crap out it. I still beat the crap out of it....

The biggest problem with an older truck is your towing capacity. My '06 ram had a combo capacity of 22,500#. My '14 Ram has a gross combination of 37,000#

Nothing wrong with a duramax if you want a mall crawler but if you plan on working it I'd go Cummins or Power stroke. 4th engine says it all. Side note my last Chevy wasn't bad engine wise but it was an electrical nightmare. The damn thing couldn't make it a few weeks without having some new electrical problem. Nothing worse than chasing down electrical issues!

Buddies laugh at the end seals it for me. am looking at a 3/4 or 1ton for my next truck so I can resto-mod my V8 dakota for a daily / town truck. Have 2004-2010 for the year range (like you said less things to break & go wrong back then) problem is all the navistar engines then are garbage & the duramax parts cost are getting pricey so am aiming for a 5.9 or 6.7 Cummins. Keep up the great work man 👍

As Justin said even after having put in the 4th motor it’s cheaper than a $120k new truck which like you said you lose about $20 grand off the top as you drive it off the lot. But to be honest with y’all I’d rather have a custom diesel company put in a Cummins after the first motor even if it was a Ford with either the 6.0 or the 6.4 motor there is a company in Colorado that specializes in Cummins conversions to fit in even a 1/2 Suburban. But thank you for the information about the Hot Shot industry I’d love to get into it except for my back injury got me out of driving OTR trucks 22 years ago and with the pain meds I don’t think I’ve gotten a chance to get back in it at any level

Time…..if it takes 7 hours to get their vs 5 the time factor will be a cost factor….new trucks have the power…brakes and transmissions to get their safer and faster…..I had a n/a 7.3 idi and it was worthless pulling until I put a turbo on it….even then my 6.0 powerstroke would put that thing to shame…I’m sure a new 6.7 could pull its own load plus my truck and it’s load and probably do it faster and use less fuel….

If you have a 100 plus k to buy one,and even the new sits in the shop longer than the older ones, down time is loosing $.
