Sometimes I get so mad at RivaTuner for misbehaving that I could turn in to The Hulk. I love when the benchmark shortcuts just don't work for no reason what so ever and you think it's capturing data and you do a whole benchmark run and it just doesn't do it's job. Othertimes the overlay just won't appear in a game when it did with the same hardware and drivers the day before. Oh the joys of benchmarking :)

unless you are doing software parity raid (5 or 6; not 10 or 1) then the cores are wasted. Get something cheaper with fewer cores and less power usage and save money on your power bill. And really you shouldn't be doing raid 5 or 6 in 2019 which drive sizes being what they are.

Hey Phil, you should check out the e5-1620 v2 cpu. It's 4 cores/8 threads but it runs at 3.7ghz and boosts to 3.9ghz. The best part is that it can regularly be found on ebay for $30 and is compatible with the dell t3610 motherboard, a lga 2011 board that can also be found for $40 pretty easily on ebay. DDR3 ECC memory can also be found dirt cheap if you're willing to do some looking, I found a store on ebay that sold me 32gb of ram for $18. The dell t3600 and t3610 motherboards are awesome because they support v1 and v2 xeons, while being inexpensive and supporting cheap dd3 ecc memory. There are other xeons that are compatible that you can choose from, ranging from $10-$70 for the 8 core variants.

I did manage to find a bundle locally where by the value of the ASUS P9X79 Pro was about EURO 70. You have to be patient and look, but they are there to be found...probably more so with the competitive pricing of the Ryzen ecosystem. Where I live, it still makes sense to look for such deals. Also, it is very questionable how long the low pricing of DDR4 will persist into 2020.

I have a xeon e-5 2680 v2, 2.8 GHZ 10 cores 20 threads single core turbo max is 3.6GHZ. Now that DDR4 is much cheaper than it was 2 years ago (or last year for that matter). 1st gen Ryzen is a better value. My Xeon gets about the same score as an R5-1600 OC'd to 3.9GHZ in Cinebench R15. In gaming, my cpu's nemisis is the newer Assassin's Creed games. Seems to do well otherwise at maintaining 60 FPS. At the time I got 32gb of ddr3 registered memory for $78, would have been more twice that much for 16gb of decent ddr4. The motherboard I got was about 80 dollars then too. Looked at used lga 2011 boards and they were expensive (still are). Yeah, no overclocking does put a damper on things.

I still run haswell-e (5930k) as my desktop workstation, its still very capable with a slight overclock. however I would caution anyone looking at x99 that if you go for haswell-e don't bother getting high clocked ram, haswell-e has a notoriously weak memory controller and 2666 it pretty much the ceiling (with my exp.). Boardwell-e on the other hand can handle higher speed memory just fine (3/3.3ghz) and i'm surprised how much its held its price. Been hesitant to jump on ryzen consumer and waiting to see TR3 and possibly Intel's successor to x299... i'll be waiting till well in to 2020 which makes me :-(. However, microcenter has the 2970wx at 799 and 24 cores at 799 is soooo tempting

There are few really good CPU's for this platform 1650 v2 being among the best. Definitely not worth switching to Ryzen unless you are going for 3rd gen 3700x at least. At the moment there are really good deals on Ryzen though. There are in fact even new unopened Ryzen cpus with fans for great prices on aliexpress, though personally I think that just getting a CPU and a cheap good aftermarket cooler is better. I'm more interested nowadays in the 2011-3 platform because there are a TON of really good CPU's there, but for the moment their prices are still too high. If the prices drop to what the prices are for the 2011 then Ryzen might not necessarily be the better option in terms of value/performance :) Still for people who are interested in x79, the E5 2689 is still among the best CPU's for price/performance and definitely worth it over Ryzen(if you don't have really good Ryzen prices locally).

Same for me. Running an E5-1660 on an ASROCK Extreme 3 at 4.2Ghz, on air. Temps idle around low 40's. At 100 percent burn test they rise to low 70's. In gaming they go to up to low 60's. Just picked up an ASUS P9X79Pro for EURO70 (local buy). Will re-purpose an E5-1650V2 from my daughter's machine (HuananZhi X79 deluxe) to my ASUS motherboard (replaced her's with an E5-4627V2, 8C/8T, 3.3 GHz base clock/Turbo 3.6 GHz, which I got at a great price US80+US14 shipping). On the fence if i should sell the E5-1660/Extreme3...or keep as a spare. These are terrific platforms for the money. DDR3 is dirt cheap and with X79 four channel, excellent performers. IMO. PS: I always put a fan blowing on the VRM's...for good measure. Fans are cheap...X79 motherboards...not so much.

I went down the Xeon E5-2xxxV2 route just like you but chose the 10-Core E5-2690V2 running at 3GHz. Yes it cost exactly double at $160 but has a much higher clock speed (despite losing 4 threads) of 3Ghz boosting to 3.6 so generally you are better off. Dump the 32GB Ram and pick 4x4GB instead - saves about $42 and get a similar Mobo with only two-DIMM support on AliExpress for $45. Overall comes out slightly cheaper but way faster. Pick your parts carefully when playing the old-tech game, to maximise performance-per-$

With a focus on gaming, the advantage of Ryzen is unsurprising, but there are of course more sensible XEONs than the 2651 v2, though I wonder how the picture would change if one was also doing streaming. It's a pity there wasn't more about content creation though, beyond the canned benchmarks, eg. can one do a render and meanwhile carry on editing? Something the many cores should help with. Still, with Ryzen having its effect on the market and DDR4 now not quite so insane, it'll be interesting to see if the Ali sellers respond as the used XEON appeal wanes somewhat. On the other hand, if used Ryzens become more popular then their prices will rise, making the value gap better once again.

Why those games with low fps arent using all cpu power but only few percents of it? Same with gpu, according to left side monitor.
@uwuuuuwauwa
@uwuuuuwauwa 4 жыл бұрын
GPU isn't used a lot because the CPU bottlenecks, CPU bottlenecks even if it's not used at all, and games do not use the CPU completely because they aren't optimized for a lot of cores and threads, they are optimized for high clock speed, so a CPU with only 4 cores and with a clock speed of 3,5 GHz, for example, will give better performance in those games

maybe not for gaming clients, but 24 cores (with HT enabled) and cheap memory with fast, cheap SSD storage and you have a pretty solid game server for pretty much everything. Minecraft, Arma (using HC), private WoW server, whatever you want. even make a cheap VM server you can attach to a NAS and run terminals out to a classroom or something.

@@chazbotic Payed professional hosting has good datacenters with connectivity. I doubt you have this at home and usually a 1 HE in a DC can't consume more then 100W and is about 30W in average for an idle system. The 2011 Socket was a very little improvements from the old Core2 systems.
@chazbotic
@chazbotic 5 жыл бұрын
@@llothar68 you're not understanding me, and using me as an example is a bad idea (400Mbit fiber connection at the home and a little DC of my own, as i work from home). a fully populated enclosure that hosts a large number of VMs is optimal for power use because of density. while a single server (say, an ML 350 or something) will pull 30-40W of energy on idle, the peak draw will generally be above this if you're using very cheap large storage disks and a couple SSDs on a cheap controller. the draw of 300W at peak, with a VM host with populated, running, VMs, is similar efficiency at scale for a home server environment where you're hosting stuff a home user would host (streaming services, private cloud, some game servers, SaaS stuff, et c). unless you're literally paying ridiculous money per KWh, the 300W peak draw is nothing on the bottom line of a power bill compared to the price of professional hosting where the customer is suborning the COGS for the DC as well as admin/overhead and a margin for the hosting company. there's no comparison other than scale. your comparison on the CPU has some merit depending on workloads, as a VM environment would be far better on a Xeon E5 than a Core 2 Quad. the advantage of the LGA 2011 CPUs is a roughly doubling of overall performance for most tasks compared to the Core 2's simply because they are a generation ahead. for a utilized machine, that's significant overhead. feel free to compare: www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/benchmarks/2019-xeon-scalable-benchmark.html points 6 and 7 for 2nd gen scalability.

Help please, I just bought a LGA 2011 based pre-buit hp and need the best CPU for gaming under $80, it currently has a E5-1620 which imo doesn't perform any better than my current I7. I was looking into the E5-2689 but is that the absolute best I can get for that price point? I am coming from a I7 3770 16gb machine to this with a lga 2011 xeon, 24gb ecc and this board has 8 ram slots so no clue how many channels it is, and for the gpu I'll be using a GTX 1070.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 4 жыл бұрын
Not a matter of opinion, you shouldn't really get more performance out of an E5-1620 than out of i7-3770, but they'll hit remarkably close to each other. There's a 2667V2 but it's well outside your price range. The 2689 seems like the best for the price but it will be a mixed bag again, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, with an overall tendency to be faster. What problem are you trying to solve exactly though? Is there a specific game or a set of games which don't deliver satisfactory performance? You need to look at their individual performance traits and see what exactly it is they want. And i mean it's an old platform, have to limit your expectations.
