It's time for another 'Why do I build PCs with Used Xeons' video, this time matching up an E5-1660 v4 from 2016 against a brand new Rocket Lake Core i5-12600k. Which one comes out on top for workstation performance? How about gaming? And should you consider a Xeon-based system here in 2022?
But first... What am I drinking???

May i ask what is ecc memory and what is for? Can i use standard rams on xeons
@dexplacid431
@dexplacid431 Жыл бұрын
@@drexter09 yes you can.Ecc memory is used on servers and has an additional memory module that checks if the info in all other memory banks goes without mistakes. (Or something like that) For example, I ran E5-2670v3 with 16 gigs of desktop ddr4 memory. But this cpu can also work with server memory too, without any problems. The most important aspect here is to avoid mixing the memory. Because ECC and standard desktop memory won't work together at the same time.

@kellyoneal5498 9 ай бұрын
Also, the MB must support the ECC ram... There are several kinds of ECC (ECC, ECC-reg, different voltages) with different specs- the Xeon chip itself will handle any just fine, but some mobos are finicky about some. Also can't mix different ECC types at once

My workstation is a x79 2697v2 12 core and ASUS Rampage IV, good little BCLK combo. Amazing how stable and smooth this system is, ECC memory in quad channel is superb. And i still love my little 2600k z77 setup, SLI gtx960s, fun little overclocking practice system, and for an 11year old chip, still plays everything. Plus the whole sytem cost about 350aud in parts.

Excellent ^_^ The higher resolutions like 1440p and 4k REALLY level the playing field, shifting the load to the GPU. A uniquely suited use case for an old V3/V4 Xeon might be an HTPC. Hook to an old 60Hz 4k TV, lock the FPS, and use the PCIE Lanes for some super fast IO like storage controllers for a NAS/ Media library, Faster network controllers, a spare old Quadro for video encoding etc. That being said, there are "middle of the road" options between these new 12th gens and the old Xeons. Enter, the used Ryzen. 3700x and 3900x are coming way down and would provide a price/$ balance between these two offerings. Let's say you play at 1080p high refresh (120FPS+), are on a budget, you still need multithread for other workloads, and the Xeon just can't push about 100FPS in your favorite game. A 3000 or 5000 series ryzen with cheap B450 or B550 could be looking spicy ^_^

Hey Jeff - cool video, and I affirm your justification for parts choices being realistic purchase options (as opposed to using a 3090ti). A quick request - could you perhaps add less transparent backdrop to presenting your benchmark results with some way of delineating rows and columns clearly, perhaps shrinking it slightly relative to the screen size so they're contained within a more clear modal? Having them run over the top of the moving video with changing colours behind etc makes it hard to read and starts to induce a headache a little bit, and the quality is quite juxtaposed compared to your high-quality set and backdrop when you're on screen.

@CraftComputing
@CraftComputing 2 жыл бұрын
Transcode would come down to GPU performance if you're talking about NVENC. For codecs that Intel QuickSync supports, that feature is only available on 7th Gen and newer CPUs, so it's not present on v3 or v4 CPUs. Transcode software performance is going to be similar to the MT scores from Cinebench R32, with the 12600K taking a huge win.

I did the same about 16 months ago, from X79/1680v2/8x4GB DDR3 to x99 ($99)/2678v3($85)/4x8GB DDR3. Very nice upgrade, IMO. Then, when XEON prices dropped I upgraded to E5-2696v3 ($45) and 4x8GB DDR4 ($66); sold off the 2678v3 and DDR3 to get the upgrade for net $16. BIG upgrade with the 2696v3 (w/turbo unlock, of course). Will now upgrade from GTX1080Ti to RTX 2080Ti ($220)...about the only upgrade left for this system. Current setup: Huananzhi X99TF (ver.1) [BIOS TU w/Mi899 tool] E5-2696v3 [18C/36T, max turbo 3.8GHz, 145W TDP, DDR3 or DDR4 compatible; all core 3.2 Ghz, up to ~8 cores at 3.8, up to ~14 cores at 3.5] 4x8GB DDR4 3000 Corsair Vengeance GTX1080Ti (undervolted) For the money, a very capable platform.

I love this video, most tech videos do not consider older (particularly 2nd hand parts). However I think you should have included some lower end modern parts. For budget it would be nice to compare a 2nd hand i3-10105F with 2666mhz ram, and a B560 motherboard (to allow better upgrade path to 11th gen). Then as a new build alternative an i5-12400F with 3200mhz ddr4 ram. I think these will have a cost price much closer to the xeon, and have a gaming performance very close to the stock i5-12600k. I think these are much better alternatives to someone considering buying an xeon. More videos like this would be greatly appreciated.

Just a note: it really depends on the game. Games with simulation often use a single thread as the master. Essentially, any time frame delivery or pacing depends on CPU, there will be slow downs or stutters. Unfortunately, these issues are just plain hard to pin to titles. For the large majority of games, these CPUs are okay, but for complex RTS/sims, and some VR titles, I would avoid anything with low single thread performance.

I recently ordered a HP Z4 with a Xeon W2145 processor to be used as an overpowered NAS. Can't compete with the Intel 13th gen CPUs but for around 300USD, I'm getting an okay processor with a pretty decent motherboard.

I love looking at Xeon alternatives for budget gaming systems. There is an aire of accomplishment to reusing tech, never intended for a use case, to achieve your goals while simultaneously saving hundreds of dollars. Everyone knows you sacrifice an upgrade path, but if one acknowledges that and is ok with it, the idea is so satisfying and rewarding. I love your content and hope there will always be intrest in reusing older tech like this.

I've seriously considered changing my setup into a Z840. I don't gane much, especially not newer games that may require the CPU. With the supposed reports that you can offer ~$250 for 2696v4's, it would make for a killer workstation that would allow me to run anything and everything I would want to _at the same time._

You can find them for 130 or less on eBay all the time! They have the highest single core performance of all of the Broadwell Xeons which is about equivalent to a 10th or 11th gen Core chip, recently put 8 into my cluster of servers and they're awesome chips.

I love the older Xeon's. I'll be the first one to say a Chinese x99 with 1660v3 which can be overclocked can still hold up REALLY well against modern stuff.

Jeff you said you used the turbo unlock for z440. Does it work for the xeon "v4"? Also, what IPA would you recommend me to buy for a friend? He loves IPAs, not too fruity and not sugary. His everyday drink is lagunitas IPA and also enjoys firestone mind haze as well. Thanks in advance.

I'm curious about the power draw of those Xeons vs the i5 system under load and idle. Also, going with DDR5 was kind of an obvious way to stack the deck price wise against the i5 system. Not a huge amount, but still. Also, would have been interesting to see a 5600 or 5600x build thrown in the mix.
@szymontrojanowski7565
@szymontrojanowski7565 Жыл бұрын
Power draw will be similar, because Intel is cheating on TDP of consumer chips, and it does not consider boost, when it comes to DDR5 memory I thought the same

Did you happen to gauge the wattage of each build? Does the reduced build cost with old xeons get offset by reduced run cost of the i5?
@quademasters249
@quademasters249 10 ай бұрын
Yearly run cost for my Xeon is something like $25. That's not including the GPU, monitor or drives. Your GPU is the real power consumer. More than the rest of the PC combined when gaming.

Can you try with E5-2696V4 and v3, I have dual setup of both but don't know hwat it would be like with a 3080ti. HP z840 for 850 AUD bare bones + each cpu was 200 - 300 aud each. Never intended it for gaming and dual would hurt it, but wanted stats

I enjoy comparisons like this. I'm still running my i7-6900K (4.2ghz all/4.3ghz 2c) as my primary gaming system. I just don't see enough of an advantage for replacing my entire setup when CPU is the least important upgrade for gaming (I don't play super high fps titles).

yeah, I'm still using an ancient 4790k with a 3080 and I'm not especially convinced that the old CPU is really bottlenecking much. framerates in real life use are very good

You've got to keep in mind power consumption too, especially at idle as most computers and especially servers spend most of their time at near idle.

For me the draw to Xeon was for home server use. I picked up an E5 2699 v3 for $48 and slapped it in an ASRock x99m board. I now have quad-channel ECC RAM support up to 256GB, and 40 pcie lanes, not to mention superb IOMMU grouping. Unfortunately the power draw is something I will have to live with until a consumer chip can offer me comparable features. I'd love to not be consistently pulling 100w, but alas lol
