I’ve always prepped for hurricanes, heavy rain storms in Louisiana because the power almost always goes out for a few hours or several days and in two storms in the past 10 years, I had no power for two weeks each time. My favorite power-out shelf stable storm food is canned chili and canned corn. Mix the two together and they taste fine without any heating. I stir heartily for several minutes because the chili will always have some congealed fat, but stirring for several minutes helps a lot. I usually get small cans of mild, no-bean chili and corn with some water because there are few people in my household. I drain the water into a cup or bowl in case the corn/chili mixture needs extra fluid. Never waste the liquid in canned veggies! Open a few saltines and Voila! Hurricane Chili!

The Bear Creek soups are a bit on the salty side for my taste. I simply add 2 extra cups of water and add some extra meat or veggies. The result is a less salty taste and an extra serving or two.

Cous Cous is brilliant, & takes on the flavour of any Herbs/Spices or concentrated Pastes really well. It's a good filler. You can usually get it cheaper in the World isle at your Supermarket, or at an ethnic food shop where it usually comes in bigger more economical packs too.

We just picked up more NIDO, along with our canned and boxed milk. I have assorted everything. I think canned and dried fruits are overlooked by too many preppers. Eaten alone, they have vitamins, minerals and fruit sugar that gets a bad rap. Canned and dried can be tossed into pancake/waffle, baking, biscuit, or cornbread mixes for an uplifting addition and some are even good in rice and grains or with meats.

Hi! Our local Walmart (Wasilla, AK) has pouches of tuna, salmon, bbq pork, chicken that , as a single person, I always keep on hand. One can just tear open and eat right from the pouch. Single serving and handy in water emergencies as well as power outages. I keep plastic spoons on hand, then no dishes to wash.

You all probably already know this, but seeing these pouches (dried fruit, sugar, even baking soda) reminds me-- MICE will chew right through them!! 😠😠😠 I learned the hard way and lost quite a bit. Yes, they even got into my baking soda (I hope they gagged for hours!!). Don't be like me and think, "Oh, it's in plastic, it's sealed airtight, nothing will happen". Well, no. The mice will find it and have a feast. Secure your preps. We are not feeding mice! 😞🤨

That's one item that has really increased in price. I used to buy a couple of the Chicken Chow Mein every time I went grocery shopping. It was around $3/can plus a can of the Chow Mein noodles. Then, I couldn't find either. Last year, I started seeing maybe one or two on the shelves, but around $6-7. I forget what the noodles are. So I only buy it a couple of times a year and try to have one in my pantry. I also started adding a can of the Stir Fry vegetables to the mix to get extra meals from it.

Bear Creek for singles...? I'd be eating the same soup for a week straight off one pouch. Ha. I have actually divided such things out, before. The last one was a different brand of wild rice soup mix. Divide it out into small plastic containers, or Ziploc, then drop into a gallon coffee can or otherwise. Dated and labeled, of course. This makes it easy to have daily variety, with veggie/meat add-ins to help further extend that variety. The possibilities are nearly endless. Definitely great option for a large group, as is, but I have to go the single-person planning route... If someone were to join me, I just double-up my single portions. I enjoy your ideas/information/videos, Alaska Granny. Thanks.
