"The rules have changed so a big part of his game is gone there but his ball striking, passing & influence on the game £125M" 100% agree with Saunders about Souness, his statement also shines a light on the modern game. A big part of the game is gone.

He was very apt to thuggish behaviour but I've no doubt that he would still be the first name down on any Premier League team's team sheet, were he playing today. Great players adapt and Souness was one of the greatest British midfield players of them all. Even his detractors (and there are many of them) will, if they are being honest, admit that he was a phenomenal player. He was intelligent enough to know just what he could get away with according to the laws of the game at that time, as is evidenced by the fact that he never received a red card in his entire Liverpool playing career. I believe that a player of Souness' ability and natural footballing intelligence would've found a way to impose himself on games without recourse to brute physicality, in the modern era. The thing to remember is that almost every side had at least one hard (hatchet) man out on the pitch. As much as anything else, the logic of it was to show the opposition that you weren't going to allow them to scare your most talented players off of their game and so you got in your "retaliation" first! With the amount of protection afforded to players nowadays, a player like Souness wouldn't even need to go about putting down a marker.

@@astalavista5328 Eh? I am a Utd fan for many decades. Souness/LFC in the 70's/80's and Keane/Utd in the 90's/00's were undeniably the two most successful captains/clubs in English football history. Utterly bizarre to pretend otherwise

If Souness played today he'd collapse from exhaustion within 15 minutes. The ability is there for them to excel if they grew up today, but going back in time and putting them into today's game would be laughable.
