What if you don’t know how you feel? Maybe it’s too complicated. Or impossible to name.
It's true. Feelings can be messy. But talking about them doesn’t have to be.
For example, if you’re moving to a new country, it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement, anxiety, fear, stress, joy, and more.
How do you name that?
In this Confident English lesson, I’m answering a question I received on KZfaq: "how to express that feeling when you don't know how you feel…?”
You’ll learn 14 new ways to talk about complicated and mixed feelings in English.
Plus, questions and conversation starters you can use when a loved one is struggling to process how they feel.

I’m so ecstatic about our upcoming vacation. However, I’m torn between driving 16 hours to our destination and flying for 3 1/2 hours. Although he has proven to be an excellent driver, I have a mixed feeling about my nephew driving to the beach for two hours and half with other bunch of kids. It seems that you are all over the place. May I ask what is causing you to feel that way? This situation is very overwhelming that I’m struggling to figure out how I feel about it. Thanks, love this lesson. I appreciate that you teaching how to articulate those mixed feelings in English 🤩

I always look over your videos and I´ve come across this very one. Recently i´ve found myself in a situation in which I had to make a difficult decision; I was, say, in two minds or rather I was on the fence; the thing was whether to accept a good job offer in another city or stay where I live. Obviously I had to take the pros and cons into consideration. In the end, I decided not to move away

Hi Annemarie! Thank you for this useful lesson. May I use these phrases in other contexts? or they are just used to talk about feelings?
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish 3 жыл бұрын
Great question, Melina. Yes, several of them can be used in other contexts. For example, if team members are struggling with a solution at work, you might say, "Let's explore the pros and cons" or "Let's walk through the options." If you haven't watched it yet, I recommend my lesson on Expressing Uncertainty and Doubt, which goes hand-in-hand with this topic. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9yKfNKZzLG1ioU.html

Hi Annemarie! I teach English in Argentina, and my students keep making the same mistake (due to transfer from Spanish, I believe) I´m struggling to correct it but I can´t make out how. The mistake is: "people is travelling around the world","there´s a lot of people....". Any idea or suggestion?
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ines, thanks for the question! That's certainly a challenge. When working on something so specific, I think a few things are key: 1. An individual must become self-aware. In other words, they need to notice and hear when the mistake is made. 2. Consistent repetition of the correct structure is essential. One thing I do when working on something highly specific is use visual cues (like a yellow post-it note) and I hold it up every time I hear the targeted word/skills/structure. This helps to build awareness and then I encourage students to self-correct. We'll do this multiple times over a period of days. I hope this helps.

Annmarie, do you speak faster in you real life, or this is just you normal rapidity of speech. I mean, I understand you very well, but audition is my problem, I'm always afraid of misunderstanding something in people's talk. And one more question. What country are you from. Is English your native language? I noticed that I understand non-native speakers better. Thank you for all you work.
