Күн бұрын

The key to a fantastic conversation in English is to ask meaningful, interesting questions. If you’ve wanted to start a conversation with a neighbor or coworker but felt unsure about what questions to ask, today you’ll get 10 conversation starters you can use with anyone.
This lesson is an update of a lesson I did in 2016. Today I’ve added 2 new bonus questions plus I’ve shared my complete list of 10 great conversation starters.
I know that thinking of questions and remember the word order or grammar structure is stressful, especially in the middle of a conversation when you have to think fast.
Use this lesson to learn fantastic conversation questions to ask and then choose 2-3 that you want to remember. Practice asking them again and again. This will help you remember them in your next English conversation.
As always, my goal is to help you express yourself effortlessly in English and with confidence.

Hi Annemarie, thank you for this fantastic lesson. I really love it. I’m curious about your bonus question “what do you wish you had more of in your life. “ That’s a conditional sentence, right? My answer to this question would be I wish I had more time to spend with my children when they were little. I worked too much when they needed me the most. That’s something I’ve regretted and I wish I could have done it differently.
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stella, thanks for the question. Actually, this question is focused on the present and/or future, not the past. So you would answer with a focus on what you wish you had more of now or what you would like to have more of. However, I could change the question a little bit to make it past focused using the past perfect. In that case, the question would be: What do you wish you had had more of in your life when your children were young? If I asked the question in that way, then your answer would work.

Thank you ma'am! I just love all the lessons on your channel. My favorite one from this list is "What's your story?" I am an Indian. I have a question? Ma'am please tell if it is annoying or not. In America, everyone asks me these questions even if I have never met them before: 1. Are you an Indian? I say yes. 2. Then they ask Are you a Vegetarian? I say yes. Then they ask, Then what do you eat? Invite me/us too on any festival of yours? I find this conversation very strange. Why would anyone be concerned about the food I cook and eat?

What a difference between cultures! If somebody tells me, for example, 'Oh, what a beautiful thing! Where did you get it?!', it doesn't have to do with a compliment at all, a person is more interested where exactly I got that thing than how much it's great or suits me!🤷‍♀️ There we go in Russia!

I have to caution everyone asking question 8. 'Where are you from originally' especially if you ask someone who looks a certain way. For example, someone might have specific characteristics or look from other parts of the world (Asia, Latin America, etc.). When you ask, 'Where are you from originally' you are implying that the person was not born in the US, but you are making an assumption based on their race, ethnicity, accent, etc. We as a society have become very sensitive around this, so you have to read the situation very well to ask this question in a way that will not appear inappropriate.
