The Spanish culture has a huge effect on many of these words. Especially for a word like "merendar" where the act of doing this really doesn't even exist in the United States. LOL But in english we DONT call people Americans! We call people from North America North Americans & people from South America South Americans! Most people are very PROUD of their nationality. So try calling Latinx by the demonym of their continent instead of by their nationality and see how long it takes before they protest (complain)! LOL This is 'Much ado about Nothing'!

Be consistent and call yourself a 'Untied Stater' in english as well! Especially when dealing with officials! This is a VERY silly issue for them to complain about! This sounds like a Woke concept, and I would not accommodate them. Simply explain to them why THEY are irrational! you can say te quiero when you are in a relationship and you are not in the I love u/ te amo phase yet, in argentina Tutear is not a lack of respect fully, some older people would tell u "me puedes tutuear" it means that u can speak informally to them no disrespect.

Here in the US we call ourselves Americans and have before most of these Latino countries existed as stand alone countries! I for the life of me can not understand what the hang up is over why Americans can never be called Americanos! Why are Mexicans NOT called estadaunidense? Mexico is formally called The United states of Mexico. If being proper is important to these Latinos why not call mexico estadaunidense? I can not respect a person who will not respect our traditions, and would not honour that as a real word!

English does NOT come from Spanish! LOL English comes from saxon German, Norman French, and some Latin added later. Any spanish words found in English are merely loan words. The fact that Spain had parts of her empire in areas now part of the US, and we just kept the names of places & things instead of inventing new ones.

Usian is such a good word, omg. In Spanish, how a lot of people doesn't know that estadounidense don't have a translation in English, get mad and offended when they hear "American" hahahahaah. Btw, amor could be use to call anybody BUT depends of the country you are in, for example in Venezuela is very common that even at the market people call you amor, corazón, mi vida, mi cielo, but it's not common at all in other countries like Argentina or México. Depends of the person too.

"Tutear" is not treating someone with a lack of respect, as he said. Whether or not to use tu or Ud. is both a cultural norm and a psychological norm, depending upon the situation and even upon the specific nation. Some nations are much more formal and traditional, in which case Usted would be more universal until it is made specifically clear that using tu is acceptable in a particular situation. People might get confused because it's actually proper to call both your puppy dog and your grandmother "tu." There are absolutely some general rules to follow which would be appropriate in 90% of cases in most Spanish speaking communities, and 10% of cases when there still might be some genuine confusion, and it can of course vary a bit from country to country. It would be somewhat similar to the "rule" that every woman is addressed as "senorita" unless it is already specifically known that the woman is married - a senora. But that is so very old fashioned that it may no longer apply in many situations. Language does, after all, continually evolve.

But that STILL makes no sense in their own logic, does it! I hope you referred to them as a SudAmericano, instead of Argentinian. I think this is just a case of the Latinx inferiority complex showing!

@@inconnu4961 - The point is that there is no noun in English which specifically refers to citizens of the United States of America, but there surely exists such a word Spanish. The word "America" refers to the entire Western Hemisphere. One nation in that hemisphere is the USA, just like another nation in the Western Hemisphere is Mexico. Another such nation is Argentina. The citizens there are every bit as much "American" as I am, even though they're not specifically citizens of the USA. This is not a Latinx topic. Did I dumb it down enough for you to comprehend?

Merendar is not snacking, at least not snacking in the way Americans do it. It is usually a small meal, somewhat formal, and social in nature. Think tapas you share with friends, family, or business aquientances, in the late afternoon, between lunch and dinner.
