Apple Specs Means Nothing. The Truth No One Talks About.
The m1 write/read speed is plus 5000 MS/s vs the 2015 write/read speed at 1000 MS/s and the 2017 IMac with the SSD upgrade the write/read is only at 469 MS/s.
From this reading the 469 MS/s should be the slowest all around but yet it’s the same speed as the more powerful M1 Pro
The best and cheapest Mac is any IMac from 2015 as long as you upgrade to SSD.
The best and cheapest MacBook Pro is the 2015 go with the 15 inch model and upgrade the SSD.

The only thing that bothers me on both my MBP 2015 and iMac 2020 is noisy cooling system. I am looking at replacing my setup with M1 Air and Thunderbolt Display.

This is 100% true. There's people on here making it seem like M1s and M2s have magic powers but they don't. Their benchmarks are impressive... but when you actually use one, rather than "test one", that's when you realize they're not actually better than intel models at all. I learned this the hard way 😂 my MBP 15" 2015 still performs beautifully and best of all, it works harmoniously with my favorite plugins and hardware, which the newer Mac's rendered unusable! With the newer Mac's, I experienced constant CPU overloads, freezes and crashes in Logic Pro and other weird glitches too. I also had to spend even more money for adapters and other irritating accessories, just to make them work with some of my gear. They're just a corporate money pit. I think the MBP 2015 is still one of the best Apple laptops ever made and in my personal experience, it destroys the newer models.

I also purchased a fully upgraded M2 Max, only to find it performed at the same speed as a basic M1 model, which was quite disappointing and felt like a waste of money. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: I won't be purchasing a new MacBook again. It seems to me that the differences are minimal, often just aesthetic changes and minor speed variations, with no significant innovation. It appears to be more about encouraging upgrades for profit than about offering substantial improvements. If you're considering the M series, I would recommend going with a basic M1, which should serve you well for years.
