Benoit Blanc returns to peel back the layers in a new Rian Johnson whodunit. This fresh adventure finds the intrepid detective at a lavish private estate on a Greek island, but how and why he comes to be there is only the first of many puzzles. Blanc soon meets a distinctly disparate group of friends gathering at the invitation of billionaire Miles Bron for their yearly reunion. Among those on the guest list are Miles’ former business partner Andi Brand, current Connecticut governor Claire Debella, cutting-edge scientist Lionel Toussaint, fashion designer and former model Birdie Jay and her conscientious assistant Peg, and influencer Duke Cody and his sidekick girlfriend Whiskey. As in all the best murder mysteries, each character harbors their own secrets, lies and motivations. When someone turns up dead, everyone is a suspect. Returning to the franchise he began, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Rian Johnson writes and directs Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and assembles another all-star cast that includes a returning Daniel Craig alongside Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline with Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

One thing also around when miles takes dukes phone after he kills him… if you watch miles left hand as he hugs duke here.. you can see miles grab dukes gun during the hug and looks like he puts it inside the back of his waist band before turning around to go make his drink…. Also as he makes his drink… you can see miles actually put the gun down at his little bar thing he’s making his drink on … and it’s there that we see him grab the gun from later when the lights go out

Here is what I think is a HUGE plot hole: if Andi and Helen are even a little bit close, why wasn't Helen present for any part of Andi's trial?? Of course if she had attended, there would not be a way for the movie to happen as written. It's also kind of ridiculous for Andi to have never mentioned having a sister (let alone a twin) in all of the years of long friendships with five separate people. 🙄

While dumb games are his Achilles heel, he would have recognized the elements that the smashed up box contained. His dismissive attitude towards it made for a good cover in case he was asked "So, how did you solve X puzzle? I wanted it to trip up Z for Y reason." But he needn't have bothered; Miles outsourced the puzzle boxes and paid tens of thousands of dollars for them. He struck me as the type of guy who couldn't be bothered with much minutiae. Like everything else he did, the point was to drop each name loud enough to cause a thud on the marble floor.

its also similar to how a game of Among Us goes. No physical evidence aside from two bodies carried by the rest of the players testimony, even going down to lying for the sake of carrying out the judgement. The amount of people is also an allusion to Among Us. Originally you could only play with up to 10 people with two imposters. Helen and Blanc are the imposters, the rest of the players are Miles, Claire, Lionel, Birdie, Peg, Duke, Whiskey, and either Andi or Daryl depending on how you choose to look at it

Saw this in a theater first time and began to notice that “Andi’s” part in her hair wasn’t always on the same side. When it’s Helen, the part is on her right. When it’s Andi, the part is on her left. On the second viewing, this appears to be consistent. With identical twins, often they are mirror images of one another. I’m hoping to try to detect if one is right handed and the other left handed on another viewing, which might be another trait of identical, but mirrored, twins.

I love the whole "no phone" part as well because one of the big tell-tale signs in the first Knives Out which indicated Ransom was the killer is that he was using an Android (Apple has a clear rule that no villain can use an apple product) so eagle-eyed fans picked up on that early in the movie essentially allowed them to know the ending/have the plot ruined for them. This time around the villain himself had no phone at all! quite fun and little nod to the first movie :)

I think Miles was going to kill Duke no matter what. Miles saw Duke going to Andi's house because he almost "pancaked" him after killing her. So in Mile's head, Duke could have saved Andi. When seeing Helen-as-Andi and no mention from either of them about Duke saving her, he would get more suspicious of Duke, wondering what his game was. Duke's mentioning of Baby Blue during the pool scene and asking Miles if he remembered almost pancaking him could also have been taken as a threat. I think Miles was always going to kill him for the same reason (knowing Miles had killed Andi), it's just the reason wasn't valid until Duke saw his alerts. Now that does bring up how Bron was going to deal with the rest of the disruptors when they found out.
@DroseraNara
@DroseraNara Жыл бұрын
@@chocolatestraw3971 I'm not certain I agree with Miles premeditating Duke's murder because I think that's giving Miles way too much credit. Remember, he's never had an original idea and the ones he does have are shitty. I think the 'pancaked' part can be attributed to him rushing to leave the scene of the crime so quickly. It's not like he sped up to hit Duke, he was already going that speed and Duke had to swerve to miss him. The autopsy that Duke would receive when the authorities arrived would have eventually proven that Duke died of an allergic reaction, IE something Miles wouldn't have been affected by if he did drink from his own glass. I don't think he thought that through much. And even taking his gun was Blanc's idea ultimately.

The general pattern of the 2nd movie seems to draw paralells with the first movie. The events are initially shown in pieces, then the rewind and review of events from a different perspective with some gaps filled in, concluding with Blanc's piecing together of events with the revelation and Blanc encouraging the main character to decide on how they want to exact their revenge. Like Marta in the 1st one, Helen initially seems like a character who has been pulled into the craziness with uncertainty but proves to be very strong and intelligent. They both eventually end the stories on their own terms. Also, there's lots of foreshadowing in both movies and they both have cheeky nods to Poirot, Agatha Christie, Sherlock, etc.

I think the most obvious foreshadowing/signposting for me were: 1) Peg not allowing Birdie Jay to have a phone, hinting at the importance of phones in the story, 2) Duke not being able to have pineapple which is a random allergy to add to a script unless it means something, 3) Duke being the least sympathetic character so you don't grieve his loss and allowing the pace of the film to continue with barely a pause, 4) the repeated references to the Hindenberg as a clue how the climax of the film would end in an explosion. The biggest one was the names on the glasses. Peg gets a plain red cup which she later writes her name on, even though she is the only one not drinking from a glass so it is obviously hers. Andi has a glass with her name on, as hers, Dukes and Miles glass all look the same. And all are involved in poisoning. The close up on the names made it clear that who was drinking from which glass was important. I was so focussed on that I noticed the glass switch first time round, and knew immediately what was about to happen. Interestingly Miles switches to red wine later. Blanc doesn't have a named glass as he wasn't expected.

A nice touch I spotted was the fugue angle - we're told that the music in the puzzle box is a fugue, which repeats the pattern of the music over itself to reveal new things; this is what the movie does, repeating the story but from different POVs revealing a new plot. This is a take on the Rashamon structure which Johnson used in The Last Jedi.

The most obvious reference: When they arrive at the island, Miles is playing Blackbird, which Paul wrote in the 60s about the strife of Black women during that period. Reflecting the struggles Andi went through in corporate America to get the credit she deserved for inventing Alpha and how she was discredited. Also, Glass Onion is a Beatles song that appears to have layers of complexity but was written as a parody by Paul. Miles then proceeds to break the guitar, symbolizing the destruction of the glass onion in the final third of the movie.
@jetsamperes5762

John wrote Glass Onion. Paul overdubbed a recorder when the song references Fool on the Hill as a parody to that song. Both Glass Onion and Blackbird are on the White Album. Not only that, but Miles claims the guitar he was playing then was the very guitar Paul McCartney used to compose Blackbird. This is clearly untrue as Miles is playing a right handed guitar and Paul McCartney plays left handed. He's either a bad liar or he really thinks it was real and got ripped off. Either way, it's further proof that he's not as smart and cultured as he made himself out to be.

4 things, not that they are clues, but they are fun little things to notice: 1. Just before Andi turns up next to birdie at the pool, you see birdie’s bag jiggle slightly as Andi has just dropped the voice recorder in it. 2. When Miles takes Dukes gun, you can see him tucking it into the back of his trousers, under his shirt. You can also see it under his shirt as he walks up the stairs towards the bar. 3. When Andi is drunkenly walking away from Clair and Lionel, in the first take you see only the two of them, but later after we’ve seen the extended take with Claire and Duke confronting Andi, you can see Claire and Lionel with duke sneaking away in the background. 4. Comparing Andi’s original napkin to Miles’ copy napkin, there are some subtle differences which speak to Miles’ stupidity and motivations. For instance, Andi intended to make an ICO with a crypto asset. Miles though that the plan somehow involve him becoming a public ICON. Instead of leveraging the DARK WEB, Miles plan just involved DARKNESS.

Great eye! I definitely noticed the gun getting taken and put behind his back and the biggest red flag for me was when I clearly saw Miles hand the cup to Duke and pick up a cup from the table when he said that Duke must have picked up the wrong cup. Speaking of the Fibonacci pattern, the cinema release date "November 23" forms the first four numbers of the Fibonacci sequence: 1123. The Fibonacci sequence starts with 1 then 1. The next numbers are made by adding the previous two numbers; so the third number is 1+1=2, then the fourth number is 1+2=3.

I don’t know if they could be ‘clues’ or not, but couple of other things stood out to me. 1) they only get the boxes open because Duke’s old ma figures it out as soon as it turns up - and then continues to solve the puzzles without even looking at it. 2) Miles seems determined to drop so many famous names you can hear the thud - even having Serena Williams on video standby in the gym, just in case somebody should wander in. Tells me he’s very insecure, and willing to steal fame for his own aggrandisement, just as he did with Andy in the beginning.

He just gets hate for The Last Jedi. Personally I thought it was okay, but that there was a really great movie hidden underneath bad editing and story / character decisions. I think if you reordered the whole sequence of events (and cut out the goofy casino side plot) that it would have gone down much better with people. First half lots of time with Obi-Wan and Rey training, etc, developing their characters more and leading to the battle on Crait where Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in grand fashion physically, not the weird force ghost thing. Then the finale is the fight between Rey and Kylo. I think the pacing of the movie and character development was all trying to be too unconventional and "clever" and ultimately is what didn't resonate with people. It had some cool twists with major characters that I appreciated, but they weren't handled well IMO. Came across as trying to hard to do the opposite of what everyone expected and subvert the prior movie.

I did notice that Blanc's bracelet seemed to be malfunctioning, not giving him the chakra for his room - an early hint his presence was being (poorly) accommodated by Miles. If he'd been smart, he'd have called the boat back, thrown Blanc off the island, and grilled the others to see who invited him. But the movie shows us he's not smart. One thing I don't understand is why Miles sent a box to "Andi" and invites her to the island if he already killed her (which he did because Helen was the one receiving the box after Andi was already dead). It shouldn't be for an alibi because no one would wonder why he did not invite Andi after taking her to court. Did I miss anything? Does someone know?

I think he didn't send a box to her house to avoid suspicion that he killed her.

I guess if the police eventually went to her house and found her dead, they would see the box and think the same thing. Why would Miles send this to her if he had a hand in her murder? Then they would assume he must not have had anything to do with her death and that maybe he was trying to extend an olive branch out to her before she "committed suicide". That might have dismissed him as a suspect.

Well as Lionel pointed out, "the question is not 'why she was invited', but 'why she showed up' ". I think it probably was for the alibi because he was acting like he didn't hold a grudge against her at the pool and during dinner, despite the outcome of the trial, and he said those five people meant the world to him. It might've been even more suspicious if he wouldn't invite her, since as far as everyone knew he'd been living on the island for the last six months and he doesn't own a phone so how would he know about her death?

In the bathroom scene where Blanc was talking to Helen, the painting behind Blanc had a little red square in the same spot where Helen got shot.

Also when they tell helen shes changed, its a hint to that she is not andi, birdie also makes a subtle comment of her weight, which is funny considering helen telling blanc she doesn't think she would fit into her sisters dresses. When zou first see it you think they are just being shitty towards her, but i really think that their behaviour makes sense both knowing and not knowing her identity. Like with miles reaction at the beach

Miles takes Dukes gun at 9:36 when he hugs him. You see him tuck it into his back left side.

Miles, upon seeing the Mona Lisa destroyed, mimes Edvard Munch's "The Scream". Duke's gun turns out to have under-powred amunition, which allows a small book to stop it. Benoit and Helen infiltrate "The Shitheads" to act as the ultimate Disruptors, those who serve Justice, or at least, Vengeance.

Couldn't help noticing two paintings when Blanc is with Helen/Andi in a bathroom. Behind Blanc is Matisse's cut-out of Icarus (Miles has flown too close to the sun, it seems) and behind Helen / Andi is Degas's The Absinthe Drinkers, a miserable couple hooked on alcohol, who's dreams are dashed and illusory. Tho the drink she can't get enough of seems to do wonders for her

It’s funny you say that, I just rewatched knives out after seeing this, and I enjoyed the reveal of Hugh/Chris Evan’s scheme better than Miles’. I think it’s because Knives Out was a more complex story with Hugh being revealed later in the story and he was actually a more intelligent villain.

@@Akuma07 I feel the same way - there’s something about having a character onscreen go “ok this is actually just stupid” that sorta wrecks it.

When I watched Knives Out I wasn't expecting the plot twists so I was a little more entertained. When I watched Glass Onion I was expecting them because I knew it was a sequel. There were so many basic parallels which you would expect with a sequel.
