Benoit Blanc returns to peel back the layers in a new Rian Johnson whodunit. Nice catch, BUT. Fool on the Hill is a callback in Glass Onion, which is why it's there. The character in the song itself is as unlike Miles as it's possible to be.

It's funny how in the game of Among Us, nobody dies (as you can see while Blanc gets voted out, everyone's still alive) but Angela Lansbury solved the case of who is the killer anyway, just like Blanc solves Miles' case even before he gets shot by the bolt 😁👌

working in tech, I immediately noticed this - and the fact that it's not just a book about disruption, but about why companies can do everything right and still fail, if they don't understand disruption. Christiansen is a major researcher and author out of Harvard Business School. He has advised my own employer's Board, and delivered a TED-style talk at one of our customer events that I'd rank as one of the most useful and insightful tech talks I've heard in 20 years in the industry. So makes total sense Andi would have been reading this when she came up with the idea!

Helen's vs Andi's hair part stood out prominently for me during the movie. Also, Helen's inscrutable Mona Lisa like pose occurred far more often than during the last scene of the movie-- that was just the most obvious.

I caught an interesting reference that I don’t think anyone else has noted in a video yet. Duke Cody’s pistol is introduced in the first act as a blatant and literal reference to famous Russian Author Anton Chekhov’s “Chekhov’s Gun” but it goes a level deeper. The gun is shown up close at the beginning of the third act, revealing it is a custom engraved Zastava M57… what’s interesting about that is that the pistol is a design copy of a very famous Russian pistol, the Tokarev TT33. So in the same way Rian Johnson’s films are homages to famous murder mysteries, his Chekhov’s Gun is a metaphor for copying a famous literary device.

I think the Angela Lansbury cameo might also be a nod back to the fact that Marta's mother is watching Murder She Wrote in the first movie (in Spanish) which Angela stars in (and we do see her on the TV screen). I think the image of Miles looking weirdly and intensely at the diagram on the napkin is a allusion to an iconic image of Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos, who is, like Miles, a pathological liar, con artist, rabid self-promotor and narcissistic ego-maniac, and a "disruptive" "inventor".

This lends to the idea that Miles doesn't have (many, if any) original thoughts during the film. He only thinks to burn the napkin after being given the idea, same with calling people shitheads. He didn't even write the mystery he claims he did.

As someone who’s read all of Agatha Christie and frequently rereads her books I’m so grateful for these movies bringing that typical Christie vibe. The best thing in her books and in these is that you get the mystery element, intrigue and thrill without having to be subject to the grotesque violent scenes that are often part of modern mysteries and thrillers.

yessssss! thank you for saying this. so many movies rely on shock value than storytelling, assuming audiences will be bored by well-crafted and complex stories. Turns out, it's just a lot harder to write a good story and then translate it onto the screen, than to write a college term paper outline and throw in a bunch of explosions (and usually also boobs) to make up for it.

I watched the film last night and immediately began thinking about anagrams of “Miles Bron”. I’ve come up with three possibilities so far: (1) most obviously, ones that involve the name, Elon. My favorite is “Mr B is Elon”; (2) the more general “born slime”; and most intriguingly, (3) “bromelins”. Quite a few people have addressed the first; the second is straightforward; but what about the third? It’s obscure but also chillingly appropriate because bromelin (also called bromelain) is an enzyme in pineapples that, when consumed by people severely allergic to the fruit, can lead rapidly from breathing problems to loss of consciousness and even death - i.e. exactly what Miles Bron (bromelins) induces in Duke by putting pineapple juice in his own glass and then tricking his “old friend” into drinking from it. If we want to be more obsessive, something the film both encourages and mocks (like the Beatles’ song, “Glass Onion”, that accompanies the credits), the brand name on the can of juice that Miles uses is “Vitala”. In the notes for the Sleepy Hollow TV series, a vitala is described as “an undead human being of Hindu lore that serves Kali, Goddess of death and regeneration”. This seems like an alternative spelling of “vetala” which, in Hindu folklore, according to Wikipedia, is an evil spirit that haunts cemeteries, takes demonic possession of corpses, and has an uncanny knowledge of the past, present, and future, a theme Miles highlights when he first describes the Glass Onion structure for his guests (just before his casual appropriation of Hinduism in his reference to their chakras). Finally, if we want to obsess even more, we might note that bromelin is sometimes used in the food industry to tenderize meat, something that chefs and people cooking at home often do by using onions. None of these possibilities excludes the others, of course. I’ve no idea if Rian Johnson had any of them in mind as he was writing the screenplay but given his overall approach, he was probably thinking about most if not all of them, and many others that I’ve failed to spot.

I wouldn't be surprised if every glass statue is a reference to something. I noticed that one is possibly identical to the Maltese Falcon. Also, the override button being a jester is a nice touch because only a fool would have something like that installed.

I found this one: In the scene where Claire Debella tells Helen, who she thinks is Andi, "Do you wanna know why we did it..." she follows it up by saying, "So you come here, in your Gucci flats...," the movie then cuts to Birdie quietly saying "Valentino." Since Claire assumed that Andi wears Gucci while Birdie looked at Helen's feet to see that she was actually wearing Valentino's, this is a hint to the eventual reveal that Andi is in fact Helen, who might not have known about Andi's preference in designer footwear.

I don't think that Claire "assumed" anything, she just doesn't know anything about fashion. Birdie on the other hand is former model who knows brands etc. Also: I think that Helen took some clothes and accessories from Andi house, she definitely haven't bought shoes from a designer for that trip - she was a teacher, she can't afford them

Regarding the artwork, the red and black square painting is surely a nod to Radiohead’s album Amnesiac, which has the track Knives Out and is where the name of the first move came from. The working title for the first film was Morning Bell, another Radiohead song from that album. Also the bullet hole through the glass is very reminiscent of James Bond movie, Spectre

It's also a Rothko painting that is hung upside down because Miles doesn't know or care enough to hang properly. It is titled 'Number 207 (Red over Dark Blue on Dark Gray)' so anyone who'd put even minimal attention to the painting's selection would have known which way it hangs. A visual malapropism.

Something I noticed the first time I watched was when Miles says he assigned colors/chakras to each person based on 'how I feel about them' or something like that. Blanc later points out Birdie's is yellow for guilt or some such. However, in that first scene where Miles says it, you can see Andi's is red - the first or base chakra, thoughtless passion, devoid of higher thought. - Seeing it at first, I thought it might mean he was attracted to her, but it's a reference to his snap decision to kill her (after getting the red envelope fax) without higher order thinking which is represented by the other chakras.

I noticed that The white yacht was based on Steve Job’s yatch design. Also miles wore a black turtleneck n blue jeans (ala Job’s signature outfit) when he was talking with Andi in their boardroom.

There's a part after everyone arrives to the island and Miles shows them to the house (around the time you hear the "Dong") where Whiskey is making sure to only step on the loose stones between the walkway slabs on the ground. She stands by Duke and notices his feet are touching the walkway, tells him to only step on the stones and he moves his feet. I haven't seen anyone reference this and I'm so curious what the heck they were doing!

There are also several nods to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. They are stuck on an island, the first death is by a spiked drink, the gunshot victim is faking their death. I’m sure there are more but that is all I’m coming up with right now. I’m really hoping at some point there will be a version with Ryan’s comments on the. I loved those in knives out. ❤️

The guitar on which Miles plays Blackbird is a right-handed Martin D-28. Paul did indeed write Blackbird on a right-handed Martin D-28, with a custom-cut nut to allow it to be strung left-handed (a very simple modification). It is possible that this could have been the same guitar, although I doubt Paul would sell it; it's not like he needs the money.

4:08 the painting with red and blue (Number 207) in this scene is display up-side down, it supposed to be red on top and blue at the bottom, which is another hint at Miles' phony, he doesn't understand any of these arts.

a thin I noticed: when Helen was there with a Box for Blanc, the guy who opened it said to Plan (who was in the Bathroom) : there is a PERSON with a Box. if it would have been a postman it would be unlikely to say that. SO it was clear Blanc lied to Miles, when he said he didn't know who gave him the Box...

Another cool detail: once the lights turn out and blanc is in the kitchen, you can see that one of the knives is missing. Later, when all the lights turn on again and all of the characters discover Gelens „dead“ body. You can see and hear Birdy drop the knife.

There’s a theory going around that the Mona Lisa wasn’t actually the real painting itself - obviously in the context of the movie, I don’t think the Louvre lends it out - but basically, the Mona Lisa was painted on wood, not canvas. And yet what do we see burning up in the film? Not wood, that’s for certain.

Then the French would have played Miles' for a fool. Miles does believe it's real or he wouldn't have raced to blocked Helen from pressing the fool. And his reaction is "real" compared to his "fake" reaction to the "my glass was poisoned" scene.

The wood is beneath the burning and bubbling paint. You can see if ever so briefly. That layer of paint burns off first and then the camera goes away so we never see the wood start to burn

Just saw a piece from Rian Johnson a few days ago. He admits they filmed a post credit scene, where Blanc calls the Louvre and the Mona Lisa is still there. Miles was fooled. He said they didn't run it because it would lessen the impact of the story.

I wanted to add two more hints if you ever rewatch the scene where Blanc and Miles talk after the former "ruins" the mystery, where it focuses on the picture of the gang at the Glass Onion- if you look closely, you see Miles in the center, which hints at the metaphor that Blanc is referring to- "the center is in plain sight" and "I was staring right at it". This is also a clever parallel to the same idea in "the Last of Sheila" where the gang pose underneath the name "SHEILA" which is a clue to the central mystery itself (which I'm not going to spoil). Another one is when Miles talks about Andi, and how no one speaks the truth anymore, and it's all fake smiles and agendas and people wanting what they think they're owed. This is in reference to Miles doing this to the gang instead of what is thought to be each of the other suspect's motive- he wants Klear to become public which is seen in the scene prior to dinner, wanting to cover his ass for funding the sweatshops with Birdie as a shield and his dignity which could be uprooted due to putting Duke on Alpha News.

You actually see the gun in Edward Nortons hand as he’s ‘running from Helen’ when the lights go out, before shooting her. So if you were eagle eyed enough; you would’ve known who had the gun before the attempted murder even happened.

I have yet to see a video point this out… One of the glass statues they smash, is the “Maltese Falcon”. This was the same statue Humphrey Bogart was trying to find in the 1941 film “The Maltese Falcon”. Madelyn Cline from “Outer Banks” breaks it.

Nailed it! Commented 2 weeks ago that it was possible the Mona Lisa was fake. Rian Johnson just made a comment that they filmed a post credit scene where Blanc is on the phone speaking French and then you see who he's speaking with and guess what you see still at the Louvre? They didn't use it though as it took the impact away from the finale.

There is one thing I don't understand, the detective tells Helen on the terrace that " the killer will know who she is when she arrives " , yes Miles seems surprised when she arrives, but at the end when Blanc introduces her to everyone he seems surprised !!! would he have been too stupid not to make the connection between Helen and Blanc .... hence his reaction at the end?

I had thought, and Jan's previous video agreed with me, that Miles didn't know about Helen and simply thought Andi had survived the murder attempt. Because he's that stupid. Also when Blanc introduces Helen to everyone they're surprised not just because she isn't Andi but also because they'd just seen Helen's "dead" body lying on the ground with blood hot-sauce on her chest.

Blanc thinking that the killer will immediately know that Helen is an imposter was based on Blanc thinking that the killer would be smart enough to put two and two together. But Blanc was wrong because, as he said, he's "bad at dumb things".

@@MarionCMS62 Yes, the theory would be that Miles thought Andi had survived the murder attempt and decided that he had better kill her again. Under this theory, Miles either figured things out once Duke showed him the news stories about Andi's death, OR he was just so dense that it didn't come together for him until he was plainly told, "This is Helen".

Thank you for your video. An interesting connection between the two films is that in both of them, someone who considers himself safe forgets to burn the evidence or accusations against him. In the first film, Richard Drysdale does not burn the note written in invisible ink and in the second film Miles Bron decides not to burn the original napkin.

When Peg is talking with Miles on the stairs, as she's begging him to not push Birdie to give a statement, she is saying that it will destroy her name and as a result, hers as well, because she was only pretty much working at the position of her manager/assistant. Well, she used exact words "destroyed", and then adds her name which is Peg. Add last couple of letters to her name, and connect that with what could be destoyed, as you watch Belont Blanc hiding behind some statue as he listens to this conversation. :D

I caught that too. The overlay of Blonc telling her to stop as we also hear Miles say that a distuptor will push on was perfectly done in my opinion. She showed who the true disruptor was.

She showed she was the real disrupter when we first see her. Everyone else is trying to play the box game by the rules and she gets a hammer and smashes it. Also she does the double middle finger with arms crossed gesture right before running to hit the button destroying the Mona Lisa mimicking the gesture Miles did after his disrupter speech

I'm not too sure it would be though... Miles was a fraud but he had at his disposal a fortune and it is stated that he gets others to do the thinking and solving (hence the puzzleboxes/invites). I would think his outsourced labs would've really come up with a cure/prevention, possibly tempory, and I don't think Miles would risk getting sick.

Hi, I was hoping to say this- but the cast names on the poster parallel that of the first movie where the "killer" is right after Blanc, followed by the innocent. That's how I guessed before I watched the movie that Edward Norton's character is the killer. Also, one more thing - another inspiration from Death on the Nile would be the details of suspects who would want to kill the victim being arranged by the killer, just like Glass Onion's suspects who were set up with motives for killing Miles, and an odd man out/stalker who elicits discomfort for everyone (Andi).

I think that might be just a coincidence. Movie stars on posters are usually arranged by how much they get payed for the role. Daniel Craig taking the top spot is obvious. Then another famous actor that is in a lot of pivotal scenes (The murderer). Then the protagonist of the story. Although you could say that the murderer is most likely a famous actor In a lot of scenes which would place them close to Daniel Craig in terms of billing.

@@jonaslinter Agreed. Given that it is the second movie, this can ruled as a mere coincidence. But you kind of also draw lines between Miles and Ransom- both have a douchebag-ish charm and both have this ego problem where it's their way and no one else's. Hopefully, Rian Johnson changes the formula where the villain/killer is someone who looks too sweet, less douchebag-y and seems caring, but in actuality is the killer.

At 11:39, talking about Helen's vs Andi's hair-parts, I was sure she was going to mention this clever audio-visual pun: Visible behind Helen as she sits on Benoit Blanc's terrace w/him, is an architectural feature commonly found on gothic cathedrals, but very rare in NYC apartment buildings -- a freestanding brick column that then joins the main building at the top. Blanc repeatedly tells her she must "buttress her feelings" of reverence, respect, & trust for him; "buttress them!" The name for that architectural feature -- you can easily google this or find it in any art-history text -- is a *flying buttress.*

One of the glass sculptures broken in the finale is a copy of Bird in Space by Brâncuși. The original was part of a court case over what is art? The US government charged import taxes on a metal object so the artist had to get experts to state that it is art and not taxable for import. An interesting addition to a movie that explores values in people who have none apart from their wealth.

Here is another thing that some missed. When Andi Brand was introducing Miles Bron to her group of friends at the bar Miles Bron was dressed in a button-up shirt sleeves rolled up and a black leather vest, and his hair was pulled back in a ponytail. Just like Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise) in the movie Magnolia. what do you think?

The one I remember the most is actually a dig at Birdie. Whiskey is yawning while Birdie talks about her sweatpants I think. The rivalry between the two women is really obvious, Whiskey being like the younger version of Birdie in Miles' life which both are acutely aware of.

Actually concerning the guitar, if you compare closely with Paul's photo you used, Mile's is playing it upside down with the strings in reverse order. So it can actually be legit making him an even bigger jerk when he drops it to the floor (and the scene funnier).

Since everyone is sharing their thoughts on a movie, maybe you can explain me one thing i don't understand. The scene, when Duke received notification about Andi's death and showed it to Miles, makes me confused. I mean, right away Duke was kinda blackmailing him and Miles hop on that train, promising him promotion (or whatever). But, like, why? They both saw 'Andi' alive like a minute ago, do they know it's not her? Am i missing something? Anyways, loved the movie from the first to last minute
