This was a terrifying time in Perth, we couldn’t believe it was happening. The youngest victim, Sue Candy, was my fathers friends daughter. It was horrible. David Birnie killed himself in prison. Catherine Birnie was considered for parole but eventually laws were changed and her file has been marked ‘never to be released’.

The way she's able to speak about it in such a matter of fact way is insane she's really strong

17 year old Kate instinctively did what I've heard experts in these sort of scenarios say increases your chance of survival. She cooperated and even feigned friendliness towards Catherine Birnie so the capter let her guard down. I think she's a highly intelligent person who survived something truly horrific happening to her.

I'm sorry but HOW the fuck do you look at someone who's almost naked, beat up and has restraint marks all over them and go "Nah, nothing bad happened here"? Even if they thought she was lying about being kidnapped it's obvious SOMETHING happened to her. But sure, better call the victim a liar than actually than do their fucking jobs and investigate. Police officers are literally the only people who can be so irresponsible, lazy and cruel on the job and face absolutely no consequences for it, all the while people get fired for something as stupid and unimportant as not bringing someone their juice on time. A neighbor saw her escape but didn’t even call 911?! She just went on with her day like that was nothing…? It’s unfathomable how oblivious some people can be.

It's absolutely horrible what she went through, but it is incredible how she was able to fight back and in turn save so many lives.

Many, many, *many* victims don’t come forward because they are simply not believed. This beautiful woman had a strong resolve and wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. Lord knows how many other victims she saved by being so courageous in the face of denial and ridicule. I’d probably curl up into a ball and never leave my house again if I were in her shoes. When we don’t believe women *people die* .

*How ONE act from ONE person (who seemingly had no power at the time) can have such great affect with helping others:* Kate was just as or more concerned about others than she was herself before she escaped, & was MORE concerned about others after she was safe, which was a big part of what prompted others to act quickly. Also, Laura, the young Constable acted in the same way!

How many more women died, because the sergeant (name unknown) chose not to believe her, ordered her statement to be filed as "a false report' and actually charged her for making said "false report"?! Thank God, constable Hancock had the intelligence, intuition and common sense to advise the detective to contact Kate. She saved many lives. I certainly hope that sergeant was charged with "negligence of duty" and *Terminated* . Never allowed to work in "law enforcement", ever again!

I moved to Australia (from UK) in Jan 88 and this was a huge and ongoing story. That woman (Birnie) will never see the light of a free day ever again. The Australian people old enough to remember it will never let that happen. Kate is an absolute warrior and an inspiration to all females. You are by far my favorite true crime channel. Not only do you describe these cases extremely well and put so much detail into them, you focus more on the victim than the offender. You don't make the offender seem like they're being idolized and I appreciate that so so much.

What a truly brave woman Kate Moir was and is in every sense of the word. I was born in Perth and lived here all my life. I was 20 years old at the time of these murders so most of the girls were around my age, I even worked with Denise Brown's sister at the time she went missing. This was a shocking period in Perth's history and many of us girls were warned by our parents to be extra vigilant. Palmyra was only two suburbs away from my home. We followed this case intensely because it was so unheard of for sleepy little Perth and it terrified us, and our hearts broke for those poor women because Perth really was like one big family back then. Kate Moir literally saved the lives of countless other girls, she is a very special person and I pray that she has some sort of peace in her heart nowadays. Her profound level headedness and extreme bravery during such an horrific ordeal deserve so much recognition. What absolutely defies belief is the male police's attitude to Kate and also the other missing girls. Perth really was a very patriarchal, sexist and misogynistic place back then, and women were often treated as second class citizens. Indeed, when police were called out to "domestic violence" incidents their policy was to "never get involved in domestic disagreements between a husband and his wife", so they pretty much always never took it any further which just gave the abusive man a free licence to beat his wife up any time he wanted to and get away with it. It literally was only due to the dedication and instinct of this wonderful police woman together with the indescribable strength and bravery of Kate Moir, that the matter was ever investigated and the vile evil Birnies charged and convicted. Hopefully things have changed alot in law enforcement since then, somehow I don't think so.

Given how easy it would have been to check out the couple to see if their home matched Kate's description, it is incredible how the police did nothing initially.

I have lived in Perth my whole life and through the Bernies reign of terror, how the Police initially doubted her is bewildering, I met Kate many years later, she is an amazing woman that saved many lives, I also had an encounter with Catherine in the 90's when I was a contractor and the ladies prison, we knew she had walked into the room just by the feeling that washed over us, she was pure evil. David was raping and assaulting women from when he was 13yrs old, I know people that knew him then, he was never charged with those crimes because of who the victims were the police didn't care, he was given a beating by others that knew what he had done at the time.

All I can think about is how law enforcement, worldwide, is just filled with either low IQ individuals, criminals, and corruption. The bar needs to be significantly raised for people in positions of power.

It should honestly be that if you murder people you should never get out of prison...

I live in Perth & my husband & I ran a deli in the outer Fremantle area, close to where the Birnies lived & carried out their crimes. Kate ran hurt & naked into a little neighbourhood business. 17yrs old!!! Laura Hancock is a hero & shame on the other cops who disrespected & disbelieved her & Kate. The Birnies were true evil. So much more to their story. Living through that time & seeing them ‘performing grotesquely’ in the papers & on the news every day (no social media in those days) was chilling. Catherine Birnie is a mother who left her ‘7’ kids to be with David & rape, torture & murder…next level evil. Their spree & the Claremont killings in the ‘90’s really left an indelible scar on Perth. Many of us knew family members & friends of the victims & as a community supported & shared the horror & grief with the families living through those scary,terrible times. To lose a child in this way is incomprehensible.

Something similar happened to me in south australia. While the guys was holding the knife over me acting out the places he was going to put it, he heard a noise outside and got angry thinking I had called the police so went to investigate. When he got outside I slammed and locked the door behind him and called the police. When the police came, he was still trying to get at me. They knocked on the door and I opened it while he was being questioned in the corner. When I opened the door, he charged me again and the police arrested him and put him in the xar. When I told them what happened, the detective said it was probably a set of keys and I was mistaken. They basically said I had over reacted and imagined it. They said he was delusional and psychotic. It's as if it's too much paperwork for them. Oh! And while he wouldn't let me leave for those few days, he told me a story about kane and able, and about how he had to kill his brother as a sacrifice to the music industry (he made music). Later his brother was found hanging after he was missing for over a year. I know he killed his brother and others

It is disgusting that the cops wouldn't believe her. She is a very exceptional woman who did not let fear completely consume her, therefore she was able to keep her cool enough to find a way and opportunity to escape. She lived another day.

I remember when this was all going on. A lot of young girls who had gone missing and where never found are thought to have been victims of the Birnies. I remember my mum drilling it into my sister's head, never EVER get into a stranger's car because of this.

Wtf "sounds like a lie , stitch her up with false reporting " (that she stripped down and ran into the streets to make) this cop has tunnel vision and didn't even talk to the victim) So glad that this case went to the rookie , should have said "stitch the supervisor up with a false arrest ." Almost missing a huge case which undoubtedly would have caused more murders. Should be fired blinded by tunnel vision , because it "sounded" unbelievable .Crimes are crazy sounding and unbelievable. To be a good cop you've got to be able to SEE this, not arrest the victim because you don't like the crime that's been committed against her. Cause more trauma to someone who just barely escaped her own death, and wants justice for other deaths, and to stop further deaths.

I was kept for 5 months against my will. My captor was never even confronted because Lexington Kentucky police didn't believe me. "What proof do you have?" And "that's a serious accusation you have" was the response. What a disgrace. I almost died the day I left and my monster never got a slap on the wrist.

Something very similar happened to me in 1986. He wasn't a serial killer, but still a monster. The police wouldn't listen. They didn't care. I was ignored and am still ignored to this day. The man who actually kidnapped me and raped and tortured me was given a very reduced sentence and served only 3 mos in county jail. His buddy, the one who stayed with me when the main guy left, was given 7 years. Me? I was arrested because it took me having to break the law in front of the police to get arrested so I could get away from my kidnapper because 1 officer literally drove off and left me standing on the sidewalk when I had slipped around the corner from the kidnapper. He said I wasn't reacting like I'd been kidnapped. What? The next 2 said I was "just trying to get out of the charges." They got it SO, so wrong. So wrong.
