Whenever I hear "Estado Libre Asociado" I laugh because it reminds me of my highschool history teacher. He was always like "Why do they call it that? We're not a state, were not free, and we're not associated to anything!!" To be fair, Luis Muñoz Marín (first puertorican governor in history and the person who coined it) was actually a hardcore Independentist. He called it that because he had been planning to eventually push the independence for Puerto Rico, but Congress proved to be a step forward, they knew of his plans and blocked it for 120 years now.

More fun facts: 1.The coquí isn't a frog it's its own species. Because unlike frogs, they don't have webbed feet. 2.San Juan is an islet. That's why people that live there say that they are going to the "big/main island" because they are just 2 separate lands united by a bridge. 3.We tried to independ ourselves once and it didn't work. Also known as "El Grito de Lares" this was barely a war which was planned by rebels to be in Camuy, september 24 1868 but changed to Lares in september 23 1868 because of rumors that then were spread to the Spanish government. It was succesful and on september 24, the rebels went to San Sebastian but that day many were shot and some sent to jail. And we gave up independence... yaaaaay.... 4.Puerto Rico *WASN'T* discovered by Christopher Colombus. It was discovered by Martín Alonzo Pinzón. Here's what happened... Martín seperated his ship from Christopher Colombus' float and found Puerto Rico. It was notified to Christopher. Christophet was the one who signed the contract with the royalty not Martín there for all of the credit goes to Christopher.

It is my believe that we (the Puerto Ricans) call "peso" the USD due to cultural reminiscences. Two years before the island started being a US Colony, back when it was a colony under the Spanish crown, Spain gave Puerto Rico the authority (or autonomy) to have its own economy and official currancy, "el peso puertorriqueño." This coin had the same value as the USD, but the US changed this by devaluing 40% of the Puerto Rican "peso". Eventually, the island's official currency became the USD.

Hi. I enjoy your clips. You may want to revise #12, as the hub of the older part of the city of San Juan is very much an inhabited island, separate from and linked to the Big Island (Isla Grande, the small airport’s name!) by three bridges. We can overlook Mona and Icacos to a certain extent, as they are only inhabited at certain times, for visiting or work, and lack an infrastructure.

Guys, love your channel! I have a quick correction: the actual Taino spelling and pronunciation of Puerto Rico, is Borikén, which means: “Land of the Valiant Lord.” The latinized version is Borinquen, with the accent being on the penultimate syllable: Bo-r(í)n-quen. It is inaccurate to say: Borinquén. Thought you’d want to know.

GREAT ASS VIDEO !! OMAIGA. Excellent video. 10⭐ rating. One request por favor. A little about the Jibaros the term used to refer to mountain people, who lived "in-land" in the heart of the island, and are the backbone of the Puerto Rican culture. If possible, please consider. El Jíbaro Puertorriqueño. I know a similar Mejican term but will not say unless PM?

We're just stating the fact that Spanish and English are the official languages of Puerto Rico. We know not everyone speaks English. However, I can tell you from my experience that even though I speak Spanish well, the majority of Puerto Ricans I've met in our three months here speak to me in English on first sight. Thanks for watching! ¡Saludos desde Cabo Rojo! -Jim en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico

Borikén is no longer used by us islanders. We are proud of all of our ancestry, but we do not think we are tainos, because we are not. We are a multi racial people that speaks spanish, who are also our ancestors, so we identify more with Puerto Rico.

Hi, there! The current population on the Island is around 3.3 million. It got down from 3.9 million, the highest it's ever been (about 15 years ago). After Hurricane María, about 300,000 people left, but since, 100,000 have returned.
