Acrylic Pouring Blooms Technique Inspirational Tutorial Video.

Gosh, Jodie, that's so pretty. I'm loving the US Floetrol and paint. Such a simple but great idea. The only other artist I watch regularly is Kanella Ciraco. She only does Dutch pours and generally uses a recipe of 80 Floetrol/40 paint/30 tap water so she can blow it out with a hair dryer. Her base paint is the same recipe. I know her paint is much thinner than yours but wanted you to be aware of her recipes in case it gives you any ideas you can use or adjust to work for you. What you do is so creative and each piece is so different and artistic. I just love your work. Thank you for making me smile every time.💜💜💜

That’s a stunner! And with US Floetrol? I’m impressed! I have tried this way many times, but never had such beautiful results as you do. And now that I have my first bottle of Australian floetrol, after 15 months of learning all the fluid art techniques? I’m like a kid in a candy store! I feel like I was learning the hard way, with just US Floetrol for blooms and swipes. Constantly tweaking recipes and trying the ones you all do. And yes, I still have many beautiful paintings. But as soon as I tried the Australian Floetrol? It felt like I went from, just ok, to really good, overnight! And now I have all these amazing paintings! So I really appreciate you taking the time to test these recipes, then share them with us! I honestly think you could make anything work you’re so good! 😁❤️

Aww thank you so much Greta, I really appreciate that 🤗. I’m still a little in awe that it’s US floetrol doing this myself! I totally know what you mean about getting your hands on the Aussie stuff, when I first got mine all of a sudden everything changed for the better. But it’s almost like coming full circle as I started with US floetrol as CA in the beginning and was just new in general so now that I have the experience I do coming back to US floetrol I see how it CAN work now and hopefully you can too 🤗💜

This painting has a beautiful flow to the swipes. Using the US Floetrol for both the pillow and the cell activator is a great idea. When you did the first swipe, it was so amazing to see the changes coming thru. As you did the second swipe all of the colors and cells continued to change. Remarkable, and I just love it. This beauty looks great displayed in any direction, I think. Thank you, Jodie.

I love your swipe! In my experience, when I first started pouring back in August, I was using US floetrol & water as my PM. 75% floetrol + 25% water for almost (followed Massie sp?studio recipes) everything & I had great cells. Then I heard people using AUS floetrol, had amazing cells. I kept buying more ingredients to make the perfect pouring medium & cell activator and now I have very little cells or lacing that tends to disappear as it dries. I guess keeping things simple works again. BTW it looks like we’re neighbors. I live in Arlington Heights & when you talk about it being cold, I’m totally with you on it! 💕
@ThePaintedDreamer

I typically use an untinted house paint and varnish mixture for my pouring medium as I tend to do a lot of the blooms technique but I wanted to start experimenting with alternative pouring mediums to see what could happen. I’m very impressed with the US floetrol for both PM and CA despite it drying so matte 😃. Maybe try just going back to basics and see if that helps Judi. You are totally my neighbor! I’m a bit further west but my mom is in your area, in prospect heights and I grew up in Wheeling so very familiar with the area. You definitely feel the same pain I do with the weather 🤗💜

Hi Jodie, it's absolutely gorgeous. I love the colours, and the composition. I love either orientation, it just looks amazing. When I first started doing the Sheleeart technique, I didn't know what to mix into the colours. At that stage there were only a few people on youtube who was doing this technique, and they weren't sharing the recipe with others. They were saying you had to take the course for yourself, so I used to mix my colours up with Aussie Floetrol. The results weren't bad, but nothing like yours. I didn't know what the heck I was doing, the mixtures weren't consistent. At times I would add water to it as well as Floetrol, and then I wouldn't get the same results. Now with your experiments, I can try this recipe again with much better results. Thank you so much for sharing your time, talent, and your creativity with us. As always my dear friend looking forward to your next video, kind regards Pamela 😘😘❤❤🌺🌺

Hi Jodie, you're very welcome. Yes I enjoyed it immensely, your results were fantastic and your artwork looks amazing. It was so long ago when I used the Aussie Floetrol, I think I was using 3 or 4 parts Floetrol to 1 part paint. The results were really good, beautiful lacing and cells. I found if you kept the mixture (paint and floetrol) in a container for awhile, it would thicken up. I would add water to it, then the results weren't so great I should of added more Floetrol. By adding the water I found I wouldn't get as much lacing or cells, and I found my paint would tend to break up. I don't blame you not wanting to do an experiment on the Aussie Floetrol due to the cost, because yes it is expensive to buy. If you do change your mind, perhaps only do a few colours. I hope I've been helpful, it's hard to explain my experience. It would have been easier to show you hahaha. Until next time, take care my friend 😘😘❤❤🤗🤗

Love your experiment series so far lol you know American floetrol is not my jam at all I think it dulls your colors and you get a muddy result with it but I would be very curious to see Aussie floetrol used as a pouring medium, never seen anyone try that before so if you want to continue your floetrol experiment series that would be awesome to see!! I do love the flow of this piece it's super cool I just wish the colors weren't so faded.. this color palette is usually a lot more vibrant with the val/var pm
@ThePaintedDreamer

It does add a matteness but varnishing will revive it more. I’m digging the look of it myself. If your paints aren’t thick enough you can totally get mud but I haven’t seen that here with these experiments course it’s also still cool in my studio but I would remedy that with either more paint or some gel gloss to thicken everything up. I’ve seen others use the Aussie floetrol as PM on KZfaq (those in Australia) so it does work. I may or may not test it, we’ll see 🤗

Thank you Gerri! 🤗 I don’t have a specific way of holding my swipe tool in fact with my thumb the way it is I probably hold it wrong lol but the pressure is strictly trial and error compared with the pillow you are using, some are more springy and need less pressure while some are less springy and need a little more pressure but you want to try to have a bit of an angle on it and not just flat, though I do that too sometimes. With your pouring medium being a one to one ratio is it a lot thicker than the paint you use on it and does that make a difference in the cell formation? I also noticed that your Pouring medium is deeper than what I usually use on a canvas. Is that part of the equation of getting the cells or do you just use more pouring medium than I do? I am fascinated by your work. It’s nice to have someone that will share and show the newbie people their secrets to successful paintings. I am going through a health crisis right now and fluid art and wonderful tutorials are all that has kept me sane through this. Thank you so very much for all that you do. I can’t wait for your next tutorial.❤️
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
So my pouring mediums ratio usually is not one to one. I mixed it with one color one to one in this experimental video since it was a fluid color and I was using floetrol for the pouring medium as an experiment and it was still pretty thin but had some body to it. I don’t have a specific ratio I use for paint to pm it depends on the paint and the pouring medium I’m using. I look at the color and the consistency of the mixture itself 😊. I’m not sure what you mean by my PM is deeper so I can’t comment on that though. Always check the description box under each of my videos they will give you exactly what was used for each component for that piece. Hope this helps Linda 💜

Hi, Jodie. Awesome! I am curious to know how often the paint might break down. How many times have you done this experiment?
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori 😃 thank you so much! The paint didn’t break down really in any other place or on other pieces so it could have just been that area was stretched a bit thin which will happen on any piece you do regardless of what you are using 🤗💜

Another beautiful swipe, Jody. Your composition is so amazing on these. I really REALLY appreciate that you are doing these experiments with US Floetrol, as so many of us can't afford the Aussie Floetrol. So Kudos to you! Two days ago I tried a couple of swipe paintings and one of them came out really nice, although I still am not getting cells (exceot for some pillow cells). I bought a big jar of Amsterdam black paint when Michaels had a sale, but all they had was "Ivory Black". When I added about 6 or 7 times the Floetrol (the cup was too small for more), it turned grey, and as I said, no cells. So, in your experience, does the "Mars Black" work as well as the "Oxide Black"? I want to buy a good one next time. Thanks so much.

Thank you Gail, I’m so glad it has helped you 🤗 I’ve only used the Oxide black in the Amsterdam paint and I know others that have used the lamp black with success but I didn’t know they had mars black 🤔. You can give it a try and see how it works out for you. If you have the Minwax prestain conditioner, maybe add a few drops to that mixture you made and see if it helps with that ivory black. 🤗

Hi Jodie, I found when I use the floe trol with my paint they seem to dry very dark. Was wondering if you had this problem also? Love your work 😃

Hi Mark 😊 the US floetrol does dry super matte and the colors do look a bit darker. Take a look at the experiments I’ve been doing with it the end of the video I show the dried pieces so it will give you a visual. Varnish definitely revives them and I plan to do a varnish video or short on one of the pieces to show it once it’s cured. Hope this helps! 🤗

Would this work for a bloom too or swipes and blooms have different recipes?

Yep, I did four of these videos, like a mini series with the US floetrol as I was experimenting. The first video I did blooms (videos 188, 190, 192 and 194) 🤗

Maybe a ridiculous question but have you ever done blooms using guoache?
@ThePaintedDreamer
@ThePaintedDreamer 2 жыл бұрын
Not ridiculous, I only have a couple gouache colors but have used them in my pieces, to me they worked just like soft body paints I didn’t have a problem with them. I don’t know what would happen if you used all gouache paints though, mine was mixed in with acrylics 🤗

Jodie, I've tried your recipe for 10:1 US Floetrol and Amsterdam Titanium White, and it doesn't work! I don't see any cells open, I increased it to 11:1, I added a few drops of water and... neither! What am I doing wrong?

Hmmm 🤔 are you using US floetrol for your pouring medium as well or something else? Are you swiping with a palette knife or blowing it out for a bloom?

@@ThePaintedDreamer I am using untinted base paint C and polyurethane varnish as a medium, and I tend to do blooms and slide with the spatula indistinctly. Aussie Floetrol works great for me, but it's hard to get, so I wanted to try something new.

@@holisoyloli Using the US floetrol higher ratio is finicky, it works well with some pouring medium bases/varnish mixes and not so well with others. It has worked with my Valspar/Varathane PM mix as well as my Infinity/Jo sonja but I can't get it to work with behr or thicker untinted base paints without having to add the minwax prestain conditioner or other ingredients. Depending on the brands of untinted base paint and varnish you are using you may need to adjust it with the minwax prestain and/or glue if it doesn't want to work at all at just a high ratio. If you haven't seen the other US floetrol CA recipe (video #16) maybe give that one a try and see if it works for you, it should work better as I can get this one to work with all my PM recipes, so far. That recipe calls for the Minwax Prestain Conditioner and a PVA glue, you can sub distilled water for the ink if you don't have it. Let me know if you try that one and how it goes for you :)

I tried to find an email for you but couldn't so I'll have to ask in the comment section. I have paints and pigments mixed with different pouring mediums.Some are with Poly Pour, some with Vivid enamel mixed with with Josonja or Polycrylic (both from Colour Arte). Can you mix paints and pigments that are mixed with different pouring mediums together in the same painting. I worked all night last night to do my first 4" tile and was mostly satisfied by the 4th try and woke up this morning with it cracked all to pieces. Is it consistency of my paints/pigments are different or my pillow paint? There was positively no extra paint on that tile as it wouldn't move once I spun it out. My pillow paint was Glidden Premium Primer in semi-gloss with some GAC 800 added. I watch all your videos though lately have not left comments to anyone even though I know it helps your channel so Im sorry about that but could use some advice about what needs to change. My paints and pigments were fairly recently mixed though I did not use a drip test on any of the paints or pigments.

You can find my email by going to my channel home page and then clicking on the about tab, you’ll find all my links there including my email 🤗. Some pouring mediums are more compatible than others and it’s really trial and error as to what may or may not work well together if you are going to use more than one in your piece. I tend to use a couple different pouring mediums in my pieces at the same time but I also know they work well together and don’t have any interactions such as cracking or flocculation or something else. Cracking will occur for a few reasons, not enough paint taken off even in certain areas on your piece depending how big, some of your paints or consistencies are too thick and as it dries the top layer is drying faster than the lower layers will cause it to crack. Equally so if there are drafts or it’s cooler with a lower humidity your paints will dry faster on the top then the other layers. My pillow paint is usually thicker than my mixed paints and some of my mixed paints are thicker or thinner so it’s not necessarily because you’re using a thicker and thinner paint together in your piece it could very well be the different PMs you used or something in your environment caused the top layer to dry faster or maybe your paints were just too thick, it happens. There are certain bases that just may not work well in your environment too. I can’t use Behr here in the winter, no matter what I do it always cracks on me so there are a number of different reasons it could crack you’ll just need to do some trial and error on it in your specific environment 😊
