Having explored the furthest, murkiest depths of the Caldon canal, I turned around, came back the way I'd come and continued up the Trent & Mersey canal, through Harecastle tunnel and then took a sharp left onto the Macclesfield canal. Spoiler alert: it's utterly *lovely*.

I used your videos to plan for a recent hire boat tour from Etruria to the Caldon and Macclesfield canals - very useful, thanks! I hadn’t appreciated exactly where the LMH spot was, but we actually stopped there for two nights on the way up to Bollington and on the way back! There are some nice walks from there, on either side of the canal. Little Moreton Hall on the west, Mow Cop on the east.

Sometimes, if I watch full-screen on my 24" monitor, I get the feeling I'm sitting on your boat as you cruise. Years ago, A friend was a manager in the Canal & Rivers Trust, my brother was a pilot and I had a photo business. We were contracted to take aerial photos of a number of Midlands basins and marinas. A couple of great days out in glorious summer weather circling the sites with me almost hanging out of a Cessna clicking away.

Yes, there's a lot of green space. Government statistics for 2018 were that England is 63% agricultural land plus another 21% open land, forest and water. In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, the percentage of non-urban land is probably even higher.

that old building looks like a pump house...Fancy living in this former pumping station next to the canal? Now you can (if you've got a spare £500k) The building in Stockton Brook will go under the hammer along with two semi-detached houses Developers are invited to ‘splash’ out half a million pounds on a historic canal-side pumping station once responsible for providing clean drinking water to Stoke-on-Trent. The iconic building in Stockton Brook - next to the picturesque Caldon Canal - is being marketed as having ‘developmental potential for a variety of uses’. Two semi-detached homes next to the handsome red-brick property are also set to go under the hammer with a guide price of £400,000. The imposing 134-year-old station was one of several owned by Staffordshire Potteries Water Works Company to pump water to reservoirs at Brown Edge and Bagnall. It had been converted from steam to electricity in 1936 before being decommissioned in 1983. Suggestions include conversion to residential, a business or even a wedding venue.

I am in a fortunate position during the day, that I can let the vlogs play and listen to then, occasionally strolling over and looking at the screen. I work alone in my shop, and this series is so well done, it can be both entertaining and full of great info. And, as a bonus, I get to hear about and see many parts of England I will never get to. Yes, I must agree that is a very lovely canal. As to that building you were asking about at the start of this v'log I think it looks like the stately Wayne Manor, so maybe it's a holiday home for Batman. A nice spot in the English country side for a break from fighting crime in Gotham and the Joker does seem ideal. ;-)

@@CruisingTheCut thought as much..the discrepancy in now, here, and the "now" there! I suppose you have docked for winter .. Yes, winter. Once again. Six whole months of it.(sigh)

That "caracruiser" looks like it needs a little care to be cruising again.

In Victorian times, they seemed to like super-fancy industrial buildings. Google Image Search "Langton Dock Pumphouse" and "Albert Dock Pumphouse" for a couple of spectacular examples in Liverpool and, e.g., "Tiptree pumping station" for the Art Deco style which seems very common in Essex where I live.

When we were on the Caldon we went to have a closer look at the waterworks building, and got talking to a lady who lived in one of the cottages at the end. She told us all about the man who had bought the waterworks, and what he had planned to do with it, but like all these things it turned out to be far more expensive to convert than first thought.

The horse you mentioned @15:20, looks to be a "Morgan" breed, friends of mine here in Michigan have them.

2m28s That's the Stockton Brook Waterworks and Pumping Station. Historical site from 1884. It's actually for sale if you got a spare £400,000 lying about.

Yours was the first narrowboat vlog I happened across after spending a day on the canal with relatives. It is still a cut above all the others. Thank you.

Me too, first vlog, 18 months ago when i decided to cash it all in and retire to the Cut. After all my research, my new-to-me 70ft NB is being surveyed tomorrow. I'm trying to be very calm... :)

Well, that was brilliant! Do so appreciate the judicious use of aerial options and proving once again that the art of editing is just that, an art. Flawless. Thank you!
