1965 Dodge Dart GT Budget Build - Odd Engine Placement & The Hazards of Side Winding Torque

In this episode I find more oddities in this little 65 Dodge Dart with the 225 Slant 6 "Leaning Tower of Power". Just like in the other video on Engine Placement, I do my best in this one to show the consequences of misplacing an engine and transmission in a vehicle. Now in stock form, with the thick spongey OEM Rubber motor & transmission mounts, the things I talk about in here are not much of an issue. It's only when you start adding Torque & Horsepower to a vehicle that this rears its head with busted tail shafts, exploding transmission cases, and detonating u-joints.
The Key to it all is to eliminate as many opposing forces as you can.... by keeping all your angels in straight lines. Not only will it deliver more of your hard earned "power" to the ground (where it belongs) but it will keep those spendy parts from coming apart on you when it "dead hooks" on the starting line.
Hope that helps some of you out there, and with a little luck this little 1965 Dodge Dart will make it to the #nonamenationals this September with the rest of the Mopar crew. In it's own..... NoCar kind of way.

Wow! Amazing that the engineers would build a driveline around a steering box and chase the problems down stream! As you say, in the stock HP form, most probably provided years of reliable service. Great video and glad I finally got an up close look at an example of an offset driveline. I hope you are well and take care!

I have used those same types of levels on the crank pulley when setting up the driveline angle on my FE / 6R80 combo. They make magnetic angle finders that are pretty trick too. Thanks for the video!

In 66 they went to standard yoke driveshafts in all Mopars. Yours still has the rear transmission pump. You can push start it. It is also the last year for cable shift transmission.
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
Yep and unfortunately, it's also the Double Shift Cable one..... lol It has the separate "Park" cable just like the push button does..... ug. Needless to say.... I pulled those cables loose at the shifter and left them attached to the tranny when I pulled it.... lololololol. I guess in '66 they also straightened this angle out by shifting the whole thing to the passenger side and widening the K. It's not 3 1/2 inches though... it's only that extreme on this one because of the distance from the tail to the motor mounts....... if that makes sense.

Come to find out, none of the Mopar cars are. They all favor the passenger side, but in '66 they also off-set the rearend & widened the K to straighten this angle back out. That's why you get u-joint wrap if you put a pickup rearend in a Mopar..... the pickups are centered because they didn't have this dad-gum K to work around... lololol.

This is why Chrysler widened the front frame rail spacing for 1967. This is also why the new k members don't fit the older cars. 1967 was the first year for 2 u-joints on all models. B bodies started that in 66. Another oddity with A bodies, is the front frame rails are almost perfectly aligned from radiator to the trans crossmember. All others, B, E, and C bodies, the front rails splayed outwards toward the rocker panels.
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
GREAT information man! The inner "red-neck engineer" in me keeps asking the same question though..... why didn't they make it steer from the front? Without the box and pitman arm in there, it's a great design..... and it would've opened them up to the "holy-grail" of the rear-sump oil pan? I get that they were chasing the perfect Ackerman Angle by doing it this way.... but they could've still achieved that with the front steer and the long seeting arms at the spindles....... strange..... lol.
@IndirectConnection1
@IndirectConnection1 Жыл бұрын
@BareRose Garage because rear steer cars, aka Ford and Chrysler, have better turn in with rear steer. As the outside tire turns in, and the car leans, the outside tire toes in, and the inside tire toes out. It makes the Ackerman angle easier to obtain. This is on old cars that lean in corners though. New or modified old cars that don't lean, doesn't have the same effect.

The fan must be almost hitting the rad on one side?
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
The radiator is actually offset as well. Not much, but after seeing this comment I took a tape and measured the core as well..... yep, it's cocked as well. I think that's why the motor mounts are so far forward on this as well. It lessens that angle at the fan-radiator. Then I opened up E-Bay to look for radiators.... and sure enough, '66 down are completely specific (and more money) for that reason. Good catch JC!

My question is, why did engineering do it this way? Would it not have worked to alter the oil pan to make the fitment needed?
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
I hear ya man, and they did there as well. Problem is, it was what became Mopar's Achilles Heal. The oil pan is super shallow in the front and rear, and the main sump in the middle where the pickup tube sets is too shallow to keep the pick-up buried in oil under windage, acceleration, and braking. Working around all that stuff with the oil pan caused the oiling issues that put a lot of Mopars in the junkyards years ago. Plus it made them harder to work on, so people only worked on them when they had to work on them..... if that makes sense.

Well I guess you can get a little bit straighter if you use a bigger motor mount on the one side and a solid one on the other. Just a thought.
@BareRoseGarage
@BareRoseGarage Жыл бұрын
These early A-Body's are actually designed this way. I guess in '66 they changed it a little bit to straighten it out. But after talking to other Mopar guys... they straightened it out by off-setting the whole thing (all the way back to the rearend) to the passenger side. That's why you get u-joint wrap if you put a pickup rear end in a car.... the pickups are centered (like this rear end) because they didn't have that dad-gum K-member to work around.

She's still here and still in the making, but I had to find something lighter for this years build to take to the no name national. The Fairlane is just to heavy to trailer all that way with our little Ford Edge.
