1968 MGC Set Idle Timing, Innova Pro Timing Light

This is the last video in a 4-part series on installing a distributor and setting timing. The recommended setting is 14-16 degrees BTDC by the company that refurbished my Lucas distributor.
*In this video I mistakenly refer to the crank pulley as the cam pulley - please excuse the error.

To a lesser extent this will be a mini how-to video on using an Innova Pro 5568 Timing light. While not the cheapest timing light out there I really enjoyed using this product and it made the whole process simple.

Excellent video. My friend owns a smog shop and he let me borrow this timing gun and I have never used a digital one. Kinda lost but your video was on the dot. Thanks you so much

This upload is a replacement for a video of the same name, also uploaded on this date. I wanted to explain that the vacuum line that is left disconnected from the distributor should be plugged up so that there is not a vacuum leak when setting the idle timing. Thanks Alan for the information.

Hi, I've got the same timing light, which I've never used before. Thanks for the overview on this timing light. I plan to use it on my 1968 MGB. I know the timing and dwell figures will probably be different from an MGC. I'll have to check my workshop manual. Were you going to put a link to a John Twist distributer video in your description? I got the same gun using it for the first time into a 1975 v6 mustang and I’m stuck in dumb as a brick but I keep reading and reading trying to understand the dwell and all that stuff but I’m lost like a cat without the whiskers

Sorry, my knowledge on the gun is pretty much limited to what's in the video. And I haven't used it since, so I'm pretty sure I've forgotten everything about it.

Hello sir i need your help got new Innova Pro 5568a Timing light and my 1986 Chevy truck has HEI Distributor in-cap Coil Not external Coil as the video , my question is Where Do I Attached The DWELL Green Clamp ??

You'll have to find the negative of the coil for your setup. I'm not familiar with it. Might have to call the distributor manufacturer.

I recently bought an innova 3568 to set the ignition timing on my 1978 mgb but when I set it up nothing happens, the screen is blank and the light is off. But it works on my other cars. Please, if you have any ideas let me know, thanks.

Sounds like it's not getting any power from the leads or not enough power. Is the battery/alternator in good condition?

Try cleaning the battery of car and leads of the wire, tighten cable good, test it by wiggling gently.

When you put the 15 degree option on the timing light, your aim is to make the pulley at top dead center ? (0 degrees)? If you put the timing light 0 degree option, its vice versa correct ?

When I put the gun at 15 degrees, I'm looking for the white marking on my pully (TDC) to align with the 0 degree mark on the timing chain cover (middle tick mark). If I set the gun to 0 then, yes, just the opposite. I'm looking for the white line on the pully (TDC) to show 15 degrees advance (but there is no marking on the timing chain cover for 15 degrees advance - just 5 advance, 0 and 5 retarded). So I marked my pully with a red line at 15 degrees of advance and when the gun is set at 0 then the red line that I made should line up with the zero tick mark on the timing chain cover.

@@JRsGarage It depends on the car as to how the timing pointers on the timing chain cover are shown. On later MGB's there are 5 points, with TDC being the first one on the right, second point is 5 degs, third point is 10 degs then 15 and lastly 20 degrees. The Dynamic timing should be set at 10 degs BTDC.

Would you need to adjust the timing lights advance if you run a timing chain and timing gear +4 advanced

That should be your cam timing, separate from ignition timing.

Hello JR......First of all thank you for this good it was very helpful. I just purchased a used 5568 Innova Pro Series Timing Light. I just used it on my VW Beetle and the only function that worked was the battery voltage reader when I connected it to my vehicle. So I downloaded the instruction manual in order to use the timing light by following the instructions and strobe never came on. Would you happen to know how I can trouble shoot the light? It left me scratching my head. I probably should just contact the the dealer on this. Thanks

I wish I could help but I'm not very familiar with it. I basically just learned how to use it just enough to set the timing on my vehicle and make the video so I'd remember for next time I have to do it.

so I am having the same issue with a brand new unit. did you ever figure out the issue? Unfortunately i bought it probably a year and half ago and never used it till now!

With todays gasoline, 2023, in an older classic motor, as far as your initial timing . You have to advance it a lot more or you will be burning your exhaust valves ! ! ! Your info seems to be correct. This is a very good video.
