I was 19 in 1969 and a friend of mine who was a few years older bought a Mach 1 Cobra Jet. At the time, I didn't know what was stock and what was add on. That I learned just now from this video. Everything that you showed as add on equipment was on his car except the red stripe on the front seats and red patch in the floor. The way my friend drove that car, you would never know that it had any power at all. Finally after about 6 months I was picking on him for never punching the accelerator. We were leaving town and climbing a small hill and the speed limit was 40mph. Without downshifting, he left it in 4th gear and gently went down on the accelerator. The tires started spinning and did for a while. He got us to 100 and backed out of it. He looked at me and said "how was that" and I said great!! The color of his Mach 1 was a very dark green with gold metallic. To this day, that was the most beautiful Mach 1 I've ever seen.

I own a very original 64 GTO that my dad bought new in April of 64. He said he only ever lost two races in that GTO out of many many street races. Both of the cars that beat him didn’t just beat him but beat him super bad he says. One was another GTO, probably a 66-67, and the other was one of these 69 Mach 1 cars. He said both those cars beat him so bad he was embarrassed. I really love my GTO and love my dad. He’s awesome. My GTO still has a long way to go to being restored, and my dad is 83 now. We drive the car occasionally and it’s awesome to see my dad still enjoy the car. I really need to kick it in gear and get the damn car in better shape so my dad can enjoy it a little while before he can’t. Especially since it’s a 4 speed. Anyway my point is, I love these videos and I’m glad these obvious wealthy brothers have great taste in cars and are willing to allow these videos. Pretty awesome. And what an amazing collection. Cheers

In 1969, my 29 year old Dad drove a beige ‘67 Volvo station wagon...which he sold in about 1977. I would love to have the ‘77 AMC Hornet he replaced it with. Some guys have all the luck.

You tell a great story. Thanks for sharing. I bet your dad gets almost as much joy remembering the good times he had with his GTO as he does seeing you get a charge out of the same thing he loves. He knows his prized possession will be in good hands until hopefully a third generation comes to appreciate it. There is nothing better then sharing the love ❤️.

@@DuxburyDan Hey thanks. My dad was really one in a million. Me and my brothers were so blessed to have him as our father. Sadly he died a year ago this month. But since I wrote this original comment 3 years ago I’ve had all the interior completely redone including all the seat springs. The interior is basically perfect. Even the dome light and console lights work. The car has total new wiring from headlights to taillights and everything in between. It’s got a way to go still but it’ll get there and my dad knew it. There was nothing my brothers and I loved more from the time we were young kids to adults was listening to stories about my dad and his GTO. There’s really some great stories. True Americana. Hopefully we can all get back to those better times.

I am sorry to read about your dad. When I graduated h.s. in 1976 (Think of the ‘Dazed And Confused’ movie time period) and got my first full time job in 1977, half way through technical school, I began saving for a muscle car. Since 1973 I knew it was going to be a Trans Am. But in 1973 none of us amateurs really noticed the car companies had called it quits on continuing to make better and more powerful muscle cars every year. I am learning now, that a lot of people older than me were also unaware, In the mid to late 70s all I knew was that the engines were getting smaller and weaker. I guess we figured that the economy being subpar for the whole decade was the reason. That once the economy returned, the muscle cars of old would also. They never did. I ended up getting a 1979 Trans Am. I wanted the 400 cid engine, which they still had, and a 4-speed manual trans. They would not give it to me. The dealer said it was a 301 with a 4 spd or the Oldsmobile 403 engine with an automatic. I found out in late ‘79 they were saving the 400 4 spd for the 10th anniversary edition. All car companies had to meet fleet averages for gas mileage (C.A.F.E.) and giving the 400 4 spd to anyone that wanted them would screwup the fleet average gas mileage. So I got the 301/4 spd with a weak output of 150 hp. I think the 403 was putting out 175 and the 400, 220 hp. None of them were that great compared to the height of the muscle car era in 1969-71. I still have that Trans Am, now 43 years old. It is not running though. M This is a long way around telling you your father came of age at the right time. A DVD set I recently got on the 60s-70s muscle car era said that the ‘64 GTO was the first factory built muscle car. There were muscle cars before then but they were souped up in a shop or garage. To show how the mighty GTO had fallen by my time in the mid 70s the DVD said the GTO was no longer a car; which I knew; but a package, basically an appearance package, on I believe a Pontiac Ventura. When you are finished restoring your dad’s car you will really have a beauty. Good luck.

I had a 69 Mach 1 with 351 4 speed 4 barrel carb, with dual exhaust with no a/c. The colors were identical to the Mach 1 in this video. It was a pocket rocket and it gave the 383 road runners fits trying to keep up with me! I miss that car!

Grade 12 High School my best buddy had one. Mach 1 428 SCJ 430 Gears with Drag Pack. Had to be the most amazing car from 60 MPH on, it ran like a bullet out of hell. None of the formidable muscle cars we drove would touch it.

👍 Awesome 69 Mach 1. Fords rating of 335 hp for the 428 SCJ had to be the greatest under rating of an engine ever.

I had one of these 428 ram air Mach 1's with a 4 speed, 3.9 rear gear, Emerald green with gold trim . Very fast, the only car that ever gave me a run was a 440 six pack Road Runner. All the other factory hot rods were dead meat. This car would eat the 429 Super Cobra jet Mustangs and Tornio's like they had 2 dead spark plugs. The 429 owners all complained that they were getting beat almost all the time !

I really like this particular Mach, 1 not just because it's a 428 SuperJet with a drag pak....but the spoiler/rear window lover delete gives it such a clean look as in the original Mach 1 commercial.

To me, the best looking Mustangs were the 1969 Mustang Mach I and the 1970 Boss 302. They retained the original Mustang styling cues, but with anabolic steroids. Something today's neo-retro versions lack are the recessed headlights, hood overhang above the grill, and mild horizontal fender protrusions running down the car's upper side. I've always liked the 1971 too, but for a different reason. However, in retrospect, the proportions now look a bit odd, especially the lengthy rear overhang.

Keep up the excellent work Kevin! Good to see a real car guy who actually knows what he's talking about. Would love to see a 66 L72 Chevy Bel air or Biscayne. Such sleepers they were with no chrome, dog dish hubcaps, or wild stripes. Just that 427 under the hood and a 4 speed handle in my hand is all I need. Maybe my favorite Chevy muscle car of all. And I'm typically a Mopar guy when it comes to muscle cars but I love them all regardless of the manufacturer

I had a very rare 69 1/2 Mustang Mach 1 GT SCJ. I had everything. Build date 6/6/69. I bought it from the bank that repossessed it . Many options I had aren't noted . My counsel had the oil pressure and amp gauge with a red and blue light that came on every time I touched the brakes . I had a chrome snake next to my clock . It has two horses in the grill. The came with chrome rims and GT covers . I had the optional door in the trunk to access the interior. The car had the tilt away steering wheel and factory 8 track AM FM system and air conditioning. It had full interior lights and I think it had a fog light switch ,but not sure . The car was Black with red interior . It had the low gears with drag pack . The top speed was around 115. I did have a Ford dealer look at it and they felt it was all original. I have heard stories that some half cars ordered parts left over from the year of build sometimes were just thrown on . The counsel was a mystery . Someone thought it was from a Shelby . It held the lap belts and the shoulder belt folded over the window . I did have stereo horns ,one on left and one on right under the hood . Very odd and I've never seen one exactly like it . I sold the car years ago ,but before I sold it a potential buyer got a copy of the build from Ford and everything matched . GT package on top of the Mach 1. 😎

The one in the Video doesn't come close to my car that I had . It was a 69 1/2 Mach 1 SCJ With the GT package. It was black with red interior. My counsil had a red and blue light that came on every time I touched the brakes. I had a snake next to the clock and my oil and amp gauge was in the council. I had no stripe on the seat ,but they were the high back pillow seats. I had the 8 track AM/ FM . I had the optional door from the trunk into the interior . I had the tilt away wheel and it was adjustable. I had the low gear ratio rear end and it was a four speed stick with the Detroit locker rear end. My wheel covers were GT and the gas cap was a Pop out GT cap. I had two mustangs in the grill,AC and my horns were stereo , one far left and one far right. I did have a little cooler up front behind the grill . It also had all extra interior lights and even in the doors. The car had fog lamps but I never saw them because of bashing the front end . Top speed about 115. I drove it like Steve McQueen owned it . All I listed I really never cared much about. I'm a driver and I put that car through everything it could take less totaling it or dying. No regrets it was just a chunk of metal and bells and whistles 😜❗

Hello, I do not know about the red stripe in the seats and the red floor in a 428 SCJ but as an origional owner of a 1969 Mach 1 back in 1969 - 1971 they certainly were not part of the Mach 1 option. Ours was a 390 4spd in Indian Fire with white woven vinyl seats and black carpet and dash with the wood grain accents.

Interesting explanation of the 428 Cobra and Super Cobra, I always thought only the 429 had the SuperCobra engine which had solid lifters.... 430 is steep for the street or at least highway, I had a Camaro with 456 and always stayed on the backroads when possible, also really contributes to excessive engine wear but who cared about that when you revving 6 grand through the traps right??

The conundrum of the Mach 1....heaviest Mustang package, yet optioned out with the drag pack, which if the car was used seriously for racing, all the Mach 1 crap would be stripped off....the GT was the performance Mustang, yet it's so downplayed as to be virtually unknown past 1966.
