Billy Bremner - what a player. The heart and soul of that Leeds side.

Alan Ball of Everton and Billy Bremner of Leeds, the two midfield maestros of that era. Both superbly skilled "terriers".

Not to mention Johnny Giles in the middle of the park too, so many quality players on display.

Does footage exist of 'Battle of Goodison' when Leeds promoted to then Div 1? Also, Everton's England players supposedly had a big hangover from Mexico '70 W. Cup (Ball, Labone etc). Any older Toffees fans want to offer their perspectives?

+happychappy12 Great Everton team, but they finished 14th. One of the great football mysteries why such a top class side should fail so miserably in the seasons following their 69/70 Championship win. The Cup semi defeat, a game which they dominated, was the final nail in the coffin and the team soon broke up after that. As a side note, at the start of the season Don Revie had said "Finish above Everton and we'll be champions.", so he saw Everton as his main rivals, and I think everybody did... Leeds, Everton or Chelsea, but Arsenal won it. .

In 1969, Everton were an aging side and they didn't win the title 1970 they probably were going to win it. Brian Labone would have almost certainly retired a year sooner while Joe Royle's problem back injury held him back from that point on. Out of the other forwards Alan Whittle, David Johnson or Jimmy Husband just couldn't score enough goals. Henry Newton came in without a ready made position available and once Alan Ball left the pool of talent was quite shallow.
