FUNDRAISER: www.gofundme.com/f/filmfundra... Please help us to continue transferring these rare 16mm film reels that cost us anywhere from $275 to $350 per reel depending on the size of the film reel. We use Yale Video and Transfer in Valencia, CA to transfer our footage. Ironically, Yale Video is that same company that shot this footage over 5-decades ago. With nearly 1000 16mm film reels in our collection from 1969 to 1973, it's imperative that we get as much financial help as possible to continue posting newly transferred content on the Tommy Hawkins KZfaq channel.
Any amount donated would be greatly appreciated! We thank you in advance for your support!

Vintage ABA basketball! Great to see my Denver favorites! Byron Beck, Larry Jones, Jeff Congdon and Spencer Haywood.

Byron Beck played every season of the ABA's existence (1967-76) and was still a Denver Nugget during their first season in the NBA (1976-77).

I could be wrong but I think #24 for Denver was Spencer Haywood, who fought the NBA at the time that the pros could only draft those who had used up their college eligibility. Haywood signed with the ABA while the case was ongoing. Haywood argued that he should be considered a "hardship case" because his family was so poor that they needed the money for basic necessities. Haywood opened the door for players like Moses Malone to turn pro straight out of high school. I remember walking through the parking garage at Stapleton Field in Denver one night with my father and there was Haywood's car, a souped-up Cadillac with the #24 license plate. My dad pointed to it and said "I guess that what hardship cases drive".

I think this is 1969, earlier in the 69-70 season. 44 is Larry Miller. He played for both the Stars and Cougars that season, but was traded pretty early in the season. Haywood's leg is wrapped. He didn't seem to be looking to score much. I guess those few minutes could be misleading. Great to see Haywood Rockets footage.

I’ll say one thing-fans weren’t bombarded by “game crews” and over the top PA effects.

Los Angeles was never a pro basketball city until Magic Johnson came.....I've heard Jerry West say that even by the time he was coach of the team, the Lakers has basically no fanbase, if you walked around the city and asked about the Lakers on the street most people had no clue how the team was doing. According to West Magic Johnson changed the culture overnight

@@TRJ2241987 It did explode somewhat in the 1979-80 season, the entire NBA was rejuvenated by Bird and Magic. Attendance rose but not by much, it took a number of years in the 80's to start to really rise. As a kid in the 70's and a big Lakers fan, the Lakers home attendance avg was 16,308, that average wouldn't be matched until the Lakers 1986 season. The Wilt, West, Goodrich, years absolutely drew big crowds and the Lakers were the toast of the town.
