If that engine had a roller cam, it needed a brass tip or roller tip fuel pump rod because the roller cam is made of billet steel and will eat a steel pushrod quickly and that would explain why the rod is mushroomed and wont come out or if it did have a flat tappet you may not have had enough zinc in the oil. I personally would way rather change a cam and make the mechanical pump work before dealing with a POS electric fuel pump. But if you do decide to run an electric pump do not buy one of those little clickety clack $50 electric pump. Atleast get like a holley red or blue pump and an external regulator and dont run the fuel pump through a toggle switch because that is very dangerous in case of an accident. Wire it through a key on power port and run it through an oil pressure switch so it only pumps if the engine has oil pressure so if it stalls or floods over or you crash it will shut the fuel down.
