In this video I strip down the front fenders on the Chevy Nova we have here in the shop, perform some metal finishing work repairing rust with patches. Using some metal finishing tools to fix the firewall of the car and replace a rusted out dash board. I then go over assembling the front clip including the fenders, hood, inner fenders, bumpers and weld in some subframe connectors. I place the entire car in epoxy primer and close out the video with a walk around showing the project before it leaves our shop.
Thanks for watching if you like what you see and want to help support what we with putting out videos on this channel please visit our store and pick up a shirt, hat or a sticker.

I’m impressed that you are doing this on a frame jig. The only correct way to do it with a unibody car.

Thank you very much. I agree and feel the only way to know the suspension is straight and to get everything to fit right is in a jig.

This car looks good and the body and paint man will be able to finish it without the need for a lot of rework. I really like this body style Nova.

Thanks and yes that is my idea on building cars. If we spend a little more time on the metal phase, the body man has it a little easier and he can do a better job with less filler hopefully making the cars finish last longer.

Great work! Love the commentary, I'm going to redo a 71 Nova that sat in a field and the bottom is pretty much gone, it even needs frame rails to be perfect, I'm not quite sure how to jig it up to replace the floors, inner and outer rockers and rails at the same time, but guess I'll figure it out. How you comment as you are working really helps a person understand the process. Thank you for taking the time to do this! 🤝
@carthageclassiccars
@carthageclassiccars Жыл бұрын
I just saw this comment appreciate the feedback. Good luck on your project. I would say get it in the garage and up on a frame JIG and worse case brace the rocker panels first, make a JIG where the frame rails would align the rails. Once the frame rails are installed then cut the jigged pieces off the rockers and then work on them. You can always modify your JIG as your working just keep it level.

Another great video. Very good advice on using tig on the fender patch. My understanding is the reason mig welds are so much harder is due to the shielding gas adding carbon to the molten metal.
@carthageclassiccars
@carthageclassiccars Жыл бұрын
Interesting that sounds about right, I honestly never researched it but when you hammer and dolly the different welds a huge difference. I would believe your right because there is times i will MIG tack something together then TIG weld over the entire run and you can't tell the MIG was used at all.

Man Rick you really outdid yourself on this... you make it look so easy. Car looks beautiful I love it. Quick question for you I notice you didnt do lead on the roof skin joint you mentioned filler and quarter seam. Any reason to avoid lead in this case what do you recommend I do?
@carthageclassiccars
@carthageclassiccars 6 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot Max. I don't think every car needs lead, actually its a cool think to be able to be able to do but kind of outdated with modern fillers. You can look at applying a plate or patch over the lead seam area then finish it off like any other patch. Also look into All Metal or kitty hair fiberglass filler that might be a better option for you to go with. Most of the time I let the bodyman decide the route to go with this seam.

Did you use the AMD doors, rockers and quarters? I'm in the process of installing doors, rockers, and quarters on my 69 and bought the AMD "GM Restoration" parts (The more expensive option on their site) and distance between the style lines (top to bottom) is about a 1/2 inch off door to quarter. (The distance top to bottom is about 1/2" larger on the quarters.)
@carthageclassiccars
@carthageclassiccars Жыл бұрын
Yes AMD on all the parts I believe except the upper dash. I would say your best option is maybe relief cut and try and slightly modify the body lines. Good luck with it.
