My Dad had 1969 Chrysler Newport on one Sunday after church all of us 3 kids between 8,12 as we are leaving church small town. My Dad just floored it as I'm watching the speedometer go higher and higher from the back seat as my mom screaming to slow down. My Dad berried it pass 120 mph. I'm approaching 60, my Dad is 89 What a great car. It did 18 mpg on the highway. Memories Cheers 🇨🇦

I owned a 1971 Chrysler New Yorker 2 door hardtop for 14 years. It was a rich dark jade green metallic factory color with a white alligator grain vinyl roof. With the factory steel rally wheels and brushed stainless trim rings. Beautiful car. I really liked that car! It was equipped with an optional trailer tow package which gave it stronger springs, and it had a surgeries rear differential with a slightly higher towing gear ratio. It also had big disk brakes on the front a heavier duty rear axle. It was a lot quicker than you would expect and was fast. It had a very smooth ride. Lumpy roads? What lumps. Bumps which will knock todays luxury cars into the weeds just weren’t there in this car. Lots and lots of suspension travel and compliance. Next time your under the car, notice the rear leaf springs. The right side has one more leaf than the left. The axle is mounted forward of the spring centerline. The front spring mount is lower than the rear shackle and mount. The stiffer front portion performed like a traction bar, the extra right leaf helped with torque twist from the 400 plus pounds of torque that 440 has and the rubber isolators between the spring leaf pack and the axle perch gave a more vibration free and quiet ride. The front torsion bars are tunable for ride height. Your car includes door side impact beams inside them. And you got the early 3 point safety belts in front. If you look at the front fenders, hood and front subframe, you will see built in front crumple zone crash protection. Compared to the Cadillacs, Lincoln’s and Buick’s, their monocoque (unit body) construction made them stiffer and lighter. The 440 RB engine and 727 torqueflite 3 speed automatic transmission were stout and reliable. Chrysler C bodies from this period in nice condition are now climbing in value. I miss mine. Room? Tons. It easily carried 27 50 pound (22.6 kg) bags of concrete mix bags in the trunk with room and payload capacity to spare. (The rear suspension was not bottomed out, but it did lift the front about an inch or so.) six adults were a easy fit in the cabin.

I had 2 1972 Newports and 2 1973 Newports and LOVED them! The pinnacle of automotive design and build in my opinion. All 4 got amazingly good mileage when you drove them like they should be. getting 19-20 highway was no problem and 15 in mixed city/country. When you got tired, pull over, put the keys in your pocket and crawl in the back! LOVED the back seat as well as the front!!!

Randall Sullivan : I had a 1972 Newport Royal, 4 door sedan. Mine had the 400 CID V-8. My Newport averaged 25 to 27 miles to a gallon of gas on the highway. It had a two barrel carburetor. The inside of my tailpipe was always a light beige, almost white. It just ran lean all the time. But it would fly. I miss that car.
@randallsullivan3692
@randallsullivan3692 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevewilliams3850 I had the Royal 2 door! 400 2bbl and yes they would fly! I sure wish I had known then what I do now, I'd have taken a LOT better care of that car! It was so quiet that you had to literally touch it to see if it was running. Many times I've stopped to talk to someone and when finished, turn the key to start it and hear the starter scream in agony because it was already running and you couldn't tell.
@stevewilliams3850
@stevewilliams3850 3 жыл бұрын
@@randallsullivan3692 : Mine was real quiet. I remember now that lots of times, I thought it had turned off or something, only to find it was still running. It was fast before I had dual exhaust put on it; but after I had dual exhaust put on the car, it was even faster. I never ever had to worry about running out of time and space when I went to pass someone. I'd hit the pedal to the metal and if you were in the back seat, you'd think you were going to be slammed into the trunk. Mine had a twenty-two gallon gas tank. When I was in the Navy and stationed in Pensacola, it was a 135 mile drive to my parents house, here in Graceville, Florida. It would take less than half a tank of gas to go from Warrington where I lived, to Graceville. That's 270 miles round trip. The car got good gas mileage for such a large car with such a large motor.

@stevewilliams3850 Wow, a 72 Newport getting 27 MPG with a carbureted V8?! Hmm, are you sure, 27 mpg on the highway, that's like your average fuel injected V6 from the 90s. Besides, I heard Chryslers had terrible gas mileage, a reason they almost went bankrupt in the 70s.

My experience tells me the big Chrysler’s were the best riding best handling combination of the “state of the art” in huge automobiles, all through that period. In the mid 70s I had my grandfather's car which was almost identical to this one. Even as a 16 year old, I too preferred it to the muscle cars my friends had. I was always very particular about the way I took care of the car and how I drove it. Believe it or not, as a teenage driver I always wore both the lap and shoulder belts when I drove.
