exactly 40 years ago, Bill Hunter walked into a dealership and bought a Suzuki GSX1100. Now, 40 years later, he's on one again. And it's completely original and unrestored. That makes it worth quite a few bob.

I knew it wasn't my imagination, I knew seats back-in-the-day were more comfortable than the pieces of fabric on a blank we get today.

Owned one in Australia and loved it. Very comfortable. Rode it all over the east of Australia. It never missed a beat. Only problem I had was the rocker cover gasket’s wouldn’t last very long. But no issues in replacing them.

Great review of of a classic. The fact that it is a survivor( un-restored) bike in exceptional condition just adds to the WOW factor. Keep up the superb content. Cheers from the U.S.

We didn't get the GS1100E, in the states, until 1980. I bought a 1980 GS1100ET, in '82. These bikes were faster than anything else out there. And, the GS1100E dominated drag strips for over 30 years. The GS1100E is still very prominent at dragstrips.

My 1981 was AU$4,250 on the road. Great bike in its day you can idle around the city all day or do 220 kmh on the open road motor was always smooth and willing, fast and handled reasonably well. I still have it ,original paint (florida blue ), motor never been apart 60'000 genuine km. Only replaced clutch plates at 30000km and put a 4 into one on it . Would love to get hold of a original exhaust system rare as hens teeth these days
@congoclash3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the engine was great, but some reviews called it "a cheap way to speed and an early grave". This was a problem with many 70s superbikes, the engine was way ahead of the handling.

I have the 1980 gs 1000et larger head and valves with the cv carburators. We didn't see the 1100 16 valve till 1981 and 1982 with the coffee gas tank. We had the Gs1100 in 1980 to1982 shaft drive you are sure it's not a 80 or 79 frame with a 81 gs1100 set up on it. Can mix match parts and everything from frame to frame.

If you want to drag race one of these, just do the top end, the bottom end is bullet proof. Same as the old GPZ1100. Which I have. 83’ model with smootbores. Fuggin sweet maaaate.
@markr.19849 ай бұрын
That was not offered in the US. We got the rectangular headlight GS1100E in 1980, not 1979. And it was never called the GSX, just the GS.

The Gs1100e , that is what it was called in North America , first came out in 1980 . It was the big news story at the time. The bike that dethroned the CBX , as fastest production bike .

Just in the process of rebuilding the front calipers on my 81 GSX 750 ET as they really don't stop all that well. As far as comfort goes the GSX 750 is ok but my 84 GSX 1100 EF is twice as comfortable

Fun fact, with someone on the back you could pop the front wheel into the air, by giving it full power, they might not be so much your friend afterwards...

I was talking to a friend about this bike a few minutes ago and thought. Is there anything on KZfaq? Well not quite . Mine was silver and green. I think there were only 3 standard colours. I bought it after my 650 Kawasaki and frightened myself to death. Just a bump in the road would shift your wrist a millimetre and off it would shoot. YAE3V was purchased in Bristol and stolen from outside Stanier house in Birmingham. Very sad day. Contemporaneous road tests were asking "are they building bikes that are stupidly fast?" Probably but they were comfortable and you did feel the business in a nice pair of leathers and a Schott Police Jacket. I sometimes wore my LAPD breeches. Once a queen as they say.

Best bike ever. Only fuel, tyres and the occasional chain. I owned three... though the new bikes are not the same. It's like they are made for very small riders. Maybe I grew up (although I try not to). Time can be such a shamefull thing eh. If Suzuki reproduce this same bike again, I'm sure it will be as popular as it was.
