New well sorted 123/124/126 suspension and brakes are a thing of beauty . Nothing modern feels like it .

I agree such a joy to drive a well sorted car.

Superb video! Nice to see these old Mercs get a new lease of life. I'm just about to recommision my old W126 and do a few videos on it - not sure they'll be up to the standards of yours though! Will definitely be looking at a few more of your vids for a wee bit of inspiration! All the best ‐ keep it up! 👍

Hi, I want to thank you immensely for sharing on KZfaq your knowledge and practical demonstration of repairing Mercedes 300 D cars. You are truly generous in that sense for which I am very grateful for. Unlike Ken from Mercedes source who sells his repairing knowledge and secrets on the same heritage cars which gives the impression that It's all about money. Do you know from where I can buy a workshop manual book to overhaul my non turbo 1980 300 D engine ? I have watched your 25 part series on overhauling your 300 D turbocharged version.

Thank you for the kind words. I recommend looking on eBay to see if you can find an om617 non-turbo engine manual. eBay is a great source for original factory documentation.

Gedore is good stuff. Its a old German company. They make good hand tools as well. That was the best tools we could get in South Africa back in the day.

I did some of that on my 85 300d when I had it over 20 years ago. I did screw up the bearings, though. I overtightened them, and they eventually burned out. I don't know why I did that because I've done bearings a few times before.
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
Yeah you cannot overtighten the bearing ;)

I’ve always found the steering boxes to be the weakest link in the 123 steering. But it all depends on mileage and maintenance as always I guess. But it’s a bummer new worm gears for the boxes aren’t available anymore
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
Yeah I hear what you're saying but all staring boxes wear out with high mileage. It's pretty easy to find good used steering boxes if yours is worn out. There are even services that rebuild them. They made hundreds of thousands of these vehicles so there is no shortage of parts.

I want to change my sway bar bushings on my 200 sedan (Greece). But i cant find any videos. Is it relatively easy job?
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
I'm sorry I don't have any experience with the 200 sedan.

Are the new parts manufactured by either the OEM or Mercedes themselves as high quality as the original parts?
@woodsandbarclay3 ай бұрын
Yes I think the parts are the same quality. The parts that you're talking about are just suspension joints and rubber. As long as you order from a reputable manufacturer it's kind of hard to mess those up. No complex engineering going on here. Just stick with the big OEM name brands. Also keep in mind that Mercedes never made parts. Mercedes designed cars and assembled the parts. The parts were made buy other companies. So when anyone tells you that you have to buy genuine Mercedes parts just remember that. Mercedes never made parts. Mercedes outsourced all of their parts manufacturing to companies like Bosch, lemforder, VDO, hella, stabilis, Bilstein, etc. now there are some situations where you have to buy parts from Mercedes because the OEM suppliers do not sell to the retail Market. For example an SLS leveling valve has to be purchased from Mercedes because we don't know who manufactures that part and we are not able to buy that part from the manufacturer. The one thing that I do notice that was better 40 years ago is rubber. Modern rubber is not the same quality as the rubber 40 years ago. Anyway I hope I answered your question.

What do you do with the "old" parts that are still ok like the calipers and things like that?
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
I usually donate the calipers to other shops that my buddies own and they rebuild them and use them. I only like brand new calipers on my cars ;)
@nickfrumusa77052 ай бұрын
I see you like everything fresh and new, i wish I had access to your left over "old" parts for my car that's for sure

Are you familiar with Kent Bergsma from Mercedessource?
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
Of course everybody knows Uncle Kent
@mds24652 ай бұрын
@@woodsandbarclay he’s the best there is when it comes to finding parts for and fixing these older Mercedes-Benz
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
@@mds2465 I don't think I would go that far but yes he is a very knowledgeable mechanic.
@mds24652 ай бұрын
@@woodsandbarclay well I don’t know if and say that, but I’ll give him a lot of credit because he’s even gone so far as to manufacture his own tools that are designed for specific purposes to enable others to complete repair procedures when Mercedes has either discontinued, the production of such special tools or simply hasn’t manufactured anything that’s quite up to par for such specific tasks.
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
@@mds2465 yeah Kent makes some really cool tools I actually own a couple of them.

What do you do with the old parts taken off the car , send them for refurb and then re use them. That would be beneficial to the recycling of the old parts .
@woodsandbarclay2 ай бұрын
Depends on what part you're talking about. But we typically don't install refurbished parts on our cars we always install brand new parts. There are certain parts that you can rebuild and refurbish like axles or self leveling valves or rear hydraulic struts. But like I said we normally don't install refurbished parts on our cars. what parts are you talking about in particular? There's nothing on the front suspension of one of these cars that can be refurbished once it wears out it goes in the trash. Yes you can rebuild brake calipers but I prefer to install brand new ones since they are available from the OEM suppliers.
