Claudia Kohde-Kilsch had several years in the top 5, but Chris Evert generally found her patterns easy to predict. Only twice did Kohde-Kilsch extend Evert to three sets, and this is one. In retrospect it's somewhat fun to hear Chris getting after herself for scratchy play; she's far from stoic here. Scheduling jam-ups at the Family Circle Cup the week prior and here at Amelia Island (in both tournaments she went deep into the doubles draw with Carling Bassett and had three set affairs late into the night) left her visibly tired in her finals loss to Zina Garrison.

The opening remarks by Carillo explain why she was exhausted in final against Zina . 5 hrs of tennis till 1 am the night before then 4.5 hours here - singles and doubles then Zina the next day . Clay court singles and doubles on clay Chris has a 125 clay streak broken by tract at Italian in 79 then win 64 more till French SF 81 so from August 73-81 French she was 189-1

Mary Carillo calling Chris "unprofessional" is shocking. Chris was the consummate professional on the court! How dare she say that!

I checked Evert's h to h against players who were tall (5 '9 inches or more) s/volleyers like Claudia during Everts prime ( defined as the time between her slams June 1974 RG- June 1986 RG) I checked Margaret Court 5'9, Betty Stove 5'11, Pam 6'0 , Helena Sukova 6'2, and Claudia Kohde Kilch 6'2. (Martina and Hana were an inch shorter, wade was 5'7. Graf was 5'9 but she did not charge in) There is not a single recorded loss in those parameters. Its just a tough match up. Chris returned that big heavy first serve very well, and she knew how to exploit players who did not change directions well in the back court. Its not that there were never losses, but none of them came during her prime. Sukova got her first months after Evert's last major. Shriver had to wait until 1987 for her very first win. Court got her last in 1973, and Betty and Claudia never won at all. On the other hand, Martina had two losses against Claudia, three against Shriver and three against Sukova between July 1978 and July 1990.

I'd be very wary of the official stats about height. As Martina Navratilova said, the women tend to say they're shorter than they were, and brad Gilbert had pointed out that the men sometimes say they're taller than they are. Steffi Graf was always down as 5'9 but if you saw her in person, she was much closer to 6'

@@th8257 That's a good point. I never asked myself how that statistic was established.

Thanks Brad. Anyway it's incredible to watch those 80's matches with such a high image quality. I was very young then and started to play tennis. I was a very little boy fascinated by this game...

I so miss this type of tennis. Just watched a first round match from Doha and it was literally just boom boom boom boom tennis. No finesse. No point construction. It's just not enjoyable to watch anymore. Not to mention the annoying screeches and grunts that are so unnecessary.

So many stiff, tall, rather unattractive (to watch) players at this time. Kohde, Durie, Shriver...Sukova was a bit smoother but still was awkward. No artistic impression marks for these ladies.

The final era really when a lot of tennis was played on grass, many players didn't have amazing ground strokes, and you could win a lot of points by blanketing the net.
