The 3rd auxiliary stop light was required by the North American specifications cars association for traffic regulations in 1986 .

Thank you that's great information I knew it was the late '80s or early 90s when it happened so now we know it's officially 1986.

Now I don't recall if you said how many miles this car has, but did you set the valves on this? That seems to be one of the most neglected maintenance items on these diesels. I had a 300d for about four years in the early 2000s. I did a lot of those repairs you mentioned on it myself. I loved wrenching on that car. I traded it off at 280k miles, and it ran like a top. This was in San Diego so no rust except a little bit at the bottom corners of the rear window. You might want to remove the chrome window surround to make sure there is no hidden rust under there. Water gets trapped there. I always liked the coups.

This one has 72,000 mi and it's a garage kept vehicle. No need to remove the anodized aluminum window trim as there is no rust under there I 100% guarantee it. Valve adjustments take 45 minutes very simple to do. That has been taken care of in this car along with a new valve cover gasket.

I guess you deal with such low milage cars you never have to deal with the steering boxes ?
@woodsandbarclay28 күн бұрын
It's very rare you need to replace the steering box even on a car with a quarter million miles. There's an adjustment screw on the top of the steering box and you turn it counterclockwise in order to tighten the steering box. You turn at the opposite of what you would think. However you need to be very careful because if you turn it too many times counterclockwise it will make it too tight and you're steering will bind and could cause an accident. If you make the adjustment try turning the adjustment screw one turn counterclockwise and then go into an empty parking lot and do figure eights and make sure your steering does not bind.

@@woodsandbarclay I’ve adjusted all I can. It’s seems to be consensus that the steering boxes is an Achilles heel on this cars. The ball screw wears out. I’m now modifying a 123box to take the late 126 internals with the play compensation
@woodsandbarclay28 күн бұрын
No the steering box is not an Achilles heel on these cars. However all steering boxes on all cars wear out with enough mileage. It's pretty easy to just grab a used steering box and swap it onto your car if yours is worn out. It usually takes hundreds of thousands of miles for one to wear out though. How many miles on your car and what year is it?

I'm sorry but what Uncle Kent is talking about in his video is simply not true. Steering box play is not one of the most common problems on these cars that's ridiculous. Mercedes sources is a business and I'm sure they're trying to sell you some parts or some instruction manual. I've been out to their shop and they're great folks and I bought many things from them. But don't believe everything you hear on the internet. If you have a high mileage vehicle then yes your steering box will get worn. But no it's not an Achilles heel it's just what happens on classic cars that have steering boxes. After hundreds of thousands of miles all steering boxes on all classic cars will wear out. It's just what happens on mechanical items. How many miles are on your vehicle? Please give me some more details. What Pierre is talking about in his video is what I was explaining in my initial comment. If you have a high mileage car and your steering box is actually worn out and the adjustment is no longer helping it's pretty easy to find a used box and install it in the car. Sorry I can only be of limited help in KZfaq comments but feel free to contact me directly if you want to discuss and I can help guide you in the right direction.
