Jeep had the reputation of being unreliable, but easy to work on and inexpensive. Now they have a reputation of being unreliable, and overpriced and hard to work on.

But then again at least was shrewd enough to put the new SUV known as as the WAGONEER/.GRAND WAGONEER under the JEEP brand more or less instead of RAM or CHRYSLER. Personally, it wouldn’t have made any difference to me if I was in the market which name plate it had but JEEP people seem to have a bagaboo over that even though they are all sold at the same dealer.

They ought to ignore LAND ROVER and concentrate on FORD, GM, and TOYOTA as their principal competitors. The WAGONEER AND GRAND WAGONEER are meant to compete with the FORD EXPEDITION/ LINCOLN NAVIGATOR and CHEVROLET SUBURBAN/ GMC YUKON XL:/CADILLAC ESCALADE. LAND ROVER is in a segment by itself.

Jeep has really lowered its standards if it's trying to compete with Land Rover which is owned by Tata Motors Group. Land Rover has a significant history of poor reliability so from that perspective Jeep fits right in. If Jeep is shooting for being a "status symbol" vehicle like Land Rover, Mercedes, BMW etc, then it's a huge mistake on Jeep's end. The Jeep brand has historically never been considered to be or categorized as a "status brand" and quite frankly they should avoid going down that path. Jeep was built on the rugged outdoors, go anywhere mentality something that really no other automaker could come close to. Jeep should go back its roots and build quality off-roaders that can go anywhere and stop mucking around in the status brand genre.

To be fair, Jeeps are considered to be a luxury brand in some markets, especially Asian markets. But point taken and I totally agree

If you expect to take a WRANGLER on an extended drive on the interstate, you’ll be disappointed. Not designed for that purpose.

Because you can get the HiLux and FJ40 equivalent. The US keeps those vehicles out for "safety" or "emissions" to protect American Brands and Americans still consider Jeep American as well.

Try 70 years.. All the Mopar guys love to tell people this "but yeah "real" Mopars of the 60's-80's were crap because Chrysler was small and broke" nonsense. Forgetting how deep the hubris actually ran, or that the vehicles were ever NOT crap after the 50's. They had plenty of money, just a TERRIBLE terrible management style. For example did they really need to blow half a billion in 50's-60's dollars on gas turbine R&D which they knew before they even started the project would never ever sell? How much have they wasted on putting prototypes into production like the Prowler and Viper. Yes I'm aware of the sales tool aspect, but buy ad time is always cheaper

@@MacPoop I will concur. I'm not a fanboy of any brand, and in my opinion Chrysler products (I guess that would be MOPAR) are shoddy. It's a shame because they 'sometimes' have really iconic designs. And the interiors of Chryslers are always very nice for the money.

@@warrenny My grandparents had a 1965 PLYMOUTH FURY III when I was a little kid. I got such a kick out of that car and loved riding in it. It had a lot of rust in 1975 when they replaced it. That 318 had a very bad habit of konking out at the most in opportune times. But I also loved the sound of that gear reduction starter. One of the best ideas that CHRYSLER had that other builders adopted over time.

Thanks for your reporting - this confirms my suspicions.... To set this up; My son's 2018 Wrangler JLUR (Unlimited - meaning 4-door - Rubicon for those not familiar) has been problematic from the get-go. We bought it used w/ 47K miles for far too much in 2021 - the peak of used car pricing (price matched the mileage!). This was when he graduated college, and he needed new wheels to get to his new job because my old rusting Mazda 6 hatchback wasn't safe anymore. And, of course, he HAD TO HAVE A WRANGLER (was his life-long dream). It's all image to him - he'll probably never rock crawl with his new 35" tires and the electronic front anti-roll bar. Meanwhile, it's already had electrical issues, never mind the leaking right rear LED taillight it came with and eventually cost us $800 to replace. Starting out right away, we had an engine light where multiple dash lights came on, triggering many OBD II codes and system lockouts for stop/start, power steering, VSC and more. The Jeep dealer charged $350 to change a silly $20 CAN bus connector. I was convinced they knew what the problem was and fixed it in 10 minutes but charged us that much anyway. Grr! Had an engine light for "small vapor leak", and it ended up being the stupid charcoal canister purge valve. The canister on the older model JK was under the car, you didn't even need ramps. The new one requires rear passenger wheel removal, wheel housing splash guard removal, and pulling out the canister to access the valve. Another PITA. Had a random cylinder 3 misfire for a while. Changed that coil and plug, we'll see if that lasts. In the process of doing that I found oil seepage from seals around things poking out of the valve covers, meaning pressure build up, so I replaced the PCV valve (at about 70K miles and yes it was very sticky) which was foolishly located on the rear end of the passenger side valve cover, facing the firewall. That required lots of swearing, cuts on my hands, and an innovative use of pry bars and wood blocking to get enough forward pressure on the valve to compress the o-ring enough to be able to rotate the valve into position. TERRIBLE engineering. Oh, and I found a rodent chewed wire running from behind the battery toward the front of the bay. It was chewed near the positive battery terminal. The wires were wrapped in cloth-type electrical tape, and the red and orange wires inside were thin and the insulation fragile. Who knows what those wires were for. I had to strip, splice, solder and re-tape them. PITA. Now he's moved to San Diego, the engine light is back and so is the light showing a loose gas cap. I'm not there to work on it so off to the dealer if I can get him to actually make an appointment. We recently visited him out there, and noticed his AC was not cooling. He said "Oh yeah that started last week"... I poked around - the AC compressor spins by hand - with the engine off of course - so it's not seized. But the clutch does not engage even though the cooling system fans go into overdrive when the AC button is pushed. Seems electrical and it's not a fuse problem because I pulled the fuses specific to the compressor. The Jeep is at 75K miles now, and while poking around I noticed a flimsy little connector with thin gage wires at the compressor. Where the wires come off the harness, the weight of the short span of the wires causes a small kink where the wires are fitted on the upward facing end of the connector, and the wires are cracked and the copper exposed. Wiggling this wire with the AC on did not cause a change, so who KNOWS were the problem is. Anywho, there's a short synopsis of dealing with Jeep crap in a short 3 years. There's plenty more but no doubt most readers didn't get this far.

HUGE point! I have noticed the same with younger relatives and coworkers.

It's not just 15 year olds, but 25 year olds. Vehicles are expense, and a lot of people don't enjoy driving, and don't feel freedom on the open road.

The difference in quality between AMC Jeep and Chrysler Jeep is astounding. Plastic in Chrysler Jeep is more brittle and looks cheaper than AMC ones. AMC definitely knew better of what quality was.

@@nowiecoche AMC executives ironically were the ones controlling the combined company. The quality improved right before the merger then Daimler cost cutted them to death.

That's why you would find distinctly GM parts like the Chevy 2.8 V6 and GM steering column, keys etc. in the XJ before Chrysler bought them out. Then for a bit they would have the Pentastar logo on distinctly GM keys, then eventually switched to Chrysler keys, etc. one of the ironies about the XJ was during AMC Renault, it used a Chrysler automatic with a GM V6. When Chrysler took over, it used an Aisin Warner transmission and AMC straight 6 until Daimler killed it off.

@@AllCarswithJon I don't understand that, either. Jeep used to sell great pickups. I would love to have a used Comanche(especially a 1991-1992 model). A used J-series pickup would be an interesting project truck for me.

@@AllCarswithJonThere are lots of Ram 1500 pickup parts under a Jeep Gladiator. It does not use the same chassis as the wrangler. It uses many of the same body parts as the wrangler though. The drivelines and axles are a mix of the two.

He's the guy who made the decision to sell the Fiat 500 in the states again, right? If correct, definitely bold move.

@@scottyg7284No. Fiat was rescued and began thriving thanks to his new product line and effective cost cutting. Fiat never was meant to sell volume in the US. In other markets like Europe and South America, Fiat is a dominant brand. On the other hand, Lancia is like the Chrysler of Fiat. I do believe Marchionne had a plan for Lancia, like I also believe he had a plan for Chrysler. He passed away too early before he could really set those two brands in the right direction.

I don't see this as accurate except for the financial part. Also, Millennials are in their 30s and 40s now. Tons of millennials are into cars. Jeep as a brand is having issues because they are trying to compete with premium brands where they should be the brand for average joes.

I walk and talk based on memory. The Grand Wag starts way below $100k, and I wasn't positive off my brain how far over $100k it would get, so I hedged my words here and ended up with the worst of every option! :)

@AllCarswithJon I wasn't trying to pull your card. I just wanted to strengthen your point at just how crazy Jeep has gotten with the pricing. The video had some good talking points, and I too wonder what they're thinking with Jeep. Chrysler has let Chrysler wither and die on the vine, pretty much Dodge too. They've sunk all their eggs into Jeep and Ram (Ram has what, two models?). If Jeep is sliding they've got some problems.

Well, you put my 3 Jeeps I've owned to shame. Back when I was either 18 or 19 I saw a WW2 jeep at a used car lot. Priced like it was made of gold. The salesman left us to poke around it and get it started, which it wouldn't do. It cranked, but wouldn't catch and I remember under the hood some electrics started smoking! Salesman bragged that the owners son had been driving it, even driving it up creeks. Once we got it started, it wouldn't MOVE! Took off the 4wd and it would go, but turns out something in the front drivetrain was locked up. We suspected that 'creek driving' had ruined either the diff or front axle. I offered them like $500. Needless to say, I never bought it. :)

I'll add to your thought that Tavares is very concerned about the coming wave of Chinese EVs (as are most CEOs), but isn't it interesting he's talking about cutting *costs*, not *prices". He's trying to dig in for profit margins, when part of the problem is overpriced vehicles they're having trouble moving.

So I live in North Carolina (USA). As for the mic, it's a several year old cheap chinese wireless I got on Amazon. It's surprisingly okay by itself, but Adobe has a free cloud service that will let you upload audio, it runs it through an AI processor, and you download it. That's what I did here, and I'm glad you liked how it sounded!
