They've believed people will pay whatever they charge for the "Jeep" name for too long, and falling sales have executives scrambling!

Jeep has really lowered its standards if it's trying to compete with Land Rover which is owned by Tata Motors Group. Land Rover has a significant history of poor reliability so from that perspective Jeep fits right in. If Jeep is shooting for being a "status symbol" vehicle like Land Rover, Mercedes, BMW etc, then it's a huge mistake on Jeep's end. The Jeep brand has historically never been considered to be or categorized as a "status brand" and quite frankly they should avoid going down that path. Jeep was built on the rugged outdoors, go anywhere mentality something that really no other automaker could come close to. Jeep should go back its roots and build quality off-roaders that can go anywhere and stop mucking around in the status brand genre.

What's wrong with Jeep? They lost their way. To me, the last usefule Jeep was the TJ and XJ lines. After that, everything got to big and complicated. I've owned older Jeeps for years and we currently still have a 94 YJ. It's small, maneuverable, and off road oriented. Not to mention utterly reliable with the old pushrod 4.0 inline six. No, I have no plans on buying a newer Jeep (especially a four door wrangler), however I may buy an older one someday. Jeep is a utility vehicle. No a soccer mom van.

Thanks for your reporting - this confirms my suspicions.... To set this up; My son's 2018 Wrangler JLUR (Unlimited - meaning 4-door - Rubicon for those not familiar) has been problematic from the get-go. We bought it used w/ 47K miles for far too much in 2021 - the peak of used car pricing (price matched the mileage!). This was when he graduated college, and he needed new wheels to get to his new job because my old rusting Mazda 6 hatchback wasn't safe anymore. And, of course, he HAD TO HAVE A WRANGLER (was his life-long dream). It's all image to him - he'll probably never rock crawl with his new 35" tires and the electronic front anti-roll bar. Meanwhile, it's already had electrical issues, never mind the leaking right rear LED taillight it came with and eventually cost us $800 to replace. Starting out right away, we had an engine light where multiple dash lights came on, triggering many OBD II codes and system lockouts for stop/start, power steering, VSC and more. The Jeep dealer charged $350 to change a silly $20 CAN bus connector. I was convinced they knew what the problem was and fixed it in 10 minutes but charged us that much anyway. Grr! Had an engine light for "small vapor leak", and it ended up being the stupid charcoal canister purge valve. The canister on the older model JK was under the car, you didn't even need ramps. The new one requires rear passenger wheel removal, wheel housing splash guard removal, and pulling out the canister to access the valve. Another PITA. Had a random cylinder 3 misfire for a while. Changed that coil and plug, we'll see if that lasts. In the process of doing that I found oil seepage from seals around things poking out of the valve covers, meaning pressure build up, so I replaced the PCV valve (at about 70K miles and yes it was very sticky) which was foolishly located on the rear end of the passenger side valve cover, facing the firewall. That required lots of swearing, cuts on my hands, and an innovative use of pry bars and wood blocking to get enough forward pressure on the valve to compress the o-ring enough to be able to rotate the valve into position. TERRIBLE engineering. Oh, and I found a rodent chewed wire running from behind the battery toward the front of the bay. It was chewed near the positive battery terminal. The wires were wrapped in cloth-type electrical tape, and the red and orange wires inside were thin and the insulation fragile. Who knows what those wires were for. I had to strip, splice, solder and re-tape them. PITA. Now he's moved to San Diego, the engine light is back and so is the light showing a loose gas cap. I'm not there to work on it so off to the dealer if I can get him to actually make an appointment. We recently visited him out there, and noticed his AC was not cooling. He said "Oh yeah that started last week"... I poked around - the AC compressor spins by hand - with the engine off of course - so it's not seized. But the clutch does not engage even though the cooling system fans go into overdrive when the AC button is pushed. Seems electrical and it's not a fuse problem because I pulled the fuses specific to the compressor. The Jeep is at 75K miles now, and while poking around I noticed a flimsy little connector with thin gage wires at the compressor. Where the wires come off the harness, the weight of the short span of the wires causes a small kink where the wires are fitted on the upward facing end of the connector, and the wires are cracked and the copper exposed. Wiggling this wire with the AC on did not cause a change, so who KNOWS were the problem is. Anywho, there's a short synopsis of dealing with Jeep crap in a short 3 years. There's plenty more but no doubt most readers didn't get this far.

I think AMC really understood Jeep as they positioned Jeep as a mid priced special brand. Chrysler jumped up the prices but at least it was still somewhat affordable, although quality tanked. Then Daimler utterly ruined Jeep by making a bunch of crossovers with the Jeep name. Fiat continued the trend but I feel they at least tried to build up hype and propose Jeep as a premium brand. And some Jeep models like the latest cancelled Cherokee that your friend didn’t like, I thought was actually a decent car. Overall, I agree with what you’re saying. Jeep is far from what they originally were, and they need to go back and reboot.

Then for a bit they would have the Pentastar logo on distinctly GM keys, then eventually switched to Chrysler keys, etc. one of the ironies about the XJ was during AMC Renault, it used a Chrysler automatic with a GM V6. Pricing is the problem. I bought 2020 JL and there were deals a plenty and rates on three year financing were 1.99% at the time. Ending up getting like 6k off the price at year end close out. Was a happy clam. 4 years later and still love it. Not built terribly well but good enough for the price **I ** paid. It simply is not good enough for the current pricing. I wouldn’t even consider buying again at todays pricing as the value just isn’t there. It needs to be atleast 20% cheaper to be ballpark reasonable. Bronco released certainly killed off a huge chunk of sales too. You can have a pricier vehicle with low finance/lease rates but you can’t have a pricier vehicle with very high interest rates at the same time.

Though dealers may be required to offer a base model, I'm pretty sure that the dealers do everything they can to only display the highest trim packages. This alone doesn't limit what the manufacturers are able to build and offer, but the dealers have a lot more control over pricing, especially markups. I wish we could just go to a Tesla format of just having stores and prices that don't change based on dealer whims.

Great vid, Jon. I think you hit all the points - I like to say they overshot the mark with their pricing. I'd read somewhere that they want to be Lexus/Land Rover in terms of perception and price point, specifically with the Grand Wagoneer - they're simply not and never have been. Plus all the quality problems they've always had and are seemingly worse over the last couple of years, including with the GW - Stellantis and their former namesakes had a niche in terms of price, they were always the lowest cost of the big three American companies - and that worked for them. They built some cool looking stuff that was priced reasonably but generally didn't age well - and most folks understood what they were getting at those price points. Now they're overpriced and don't age well - a recipe for disaster. If you look right now at both the CDJR dealers and used car lots - there are Jeeps overflowing all the sales lots and it seems no one is buying, especially at the inflated prices all are asking....

I go back to Sergio Marchionne every time we discuss an FCA brand, but he really carved out Jeep’s new niche that made them so successful up until 2018. I mean, Marchionne was a calculating guy who evaluated every model in FCA before rollout. That’s why Jeep was so successful. In 2018, Marchionne died and all the flare in FCA went out since that time. Stellantis has no clue on how to position and manage Jeep because that was all done under FCA and Stellantis is just a bunch of businessmen with no clue of anything whatsoever. I can’t imagine Marchionne coming out with the electric Jeeps and pricing them at what they are now. At least FCA under Marchionne understood the American market and how far they could expand Jeep without ruining the brand. My two cents…

@@scottyg7284No. Fiat was rescued and began thriving thanks to his new product line and effective cost cutting. Fiat never was meant to sell volume in the US. In other markets like Europe and South America, Fiat is a dominant brand. On the other hand, Lancia is like the Chrysler of Fiat. I do believe Marchionne had a plan for Lancia, like I also believe he had a plan for Chrysler. He passed away too early before he could really set those two brands in the right direction.

For me, Jeep has always been about utility. CJ's and Wranglers aren't the best cars, but they can do all the car things. They aren't the best trucks, but they can do most of the truck things. You could always get one with a lot of creature comforts, or as a minimalist utility vehicle. Ditto the unibody Cherokee and Grand Cherokee: options for luxury or basic utility, combined with off road capability, at a price point not offered by other manufacturers. Reliability and ease of maintenance were also part of the sense of value associated with Jeep ownership. That's rapidly fading from memory, and new buyers aren't going line up to purchase what they're offering today. It makes me sad.

The Jeep brand attracts auto enthusiasts usually in their 20s maybe 30s. The last generation that was into cars was GenX. Now well into their late 40s and 50s, they have moved-on from the Jeep brand that represents adventure and freedom. Millennials and GenZs simply don't have the means or the interest for the Jeep brand.

I don't see this as accurate except for the financial part. Also, Millennials are in their 30s and 40s now. Tons of millennials are into cars. Jeep as a brand is having issues because they are trying to compete with premium brands where they should be the brand for average joes.

You seem to forget that Jeep became a luxury brand in the eighties with the Grand Wagoneer, long before any other domestic brands built a full-size, leather seated, all power conveniences, 4x4. The Range Rover was its only rival. The 1993 Grand Cherokee Limited was the new king on the block when everyone else started building competitive options. Both were quite expensive for their time too.

The video had some good talking points, and I too wonder what they're thinking with Jeep. Chrysler has let Chrysler wither and die on the vine, pretty much Dodge too. They've sunk all their eggs into Jeep and Ram (Ram has what, two models?). If Jeep is sliding they've got some problems.

There's no question that a lot of Jeep customers buy their vehicles solely for the brand. "Jeep owner" is a lifestyle. But the reason why the CRV and RAV4 wildly outsell Jeep is simple: they break less often. That's where my optimism about the future of Jeep ends. Jeep knows it has reliability problems. It either doesn't want to fix them or doesn't know how to.

In my view, Jeep needs to feature the Wrangler, the Grand Cherokee, the Grand Wagoneer and that's it. The previous Grand Wagoneer was the first of the luxury SUVs having a customer base among the highest per capita income of any Chrysler/AMC product, the issue is the Mitsubishi/Fiat Jeeps like the Cherokee, compass/Patriot, renegade, etc. those models should be sold through Dodge for mainstream and performance models while luxury versions sold through Chrysler.

Extremely well done video, congrats. And news just broke Stellantis is selling the Chrysler building in Auburn Hills and laying off many workers. So, I will just add, I think Jeep is a uniquely iconic American brand with a vehicle that literally helped win WWII. I truly wish it was owned by Americans and those who truly understand its uniquely American appeal. I know it’s a long shot but I wish GM or Ford could somehow buy it, even though there would be duplication in the lineups. To close, I find it obscene that with the discontinuation of the Cherokee, Jeep is t even competing in the segment it created, the compact SUV (with the original Cherokee). I find that sad and pathetic.

In the Jeep SUV's that you listed, you can totally see the European influence... And it was predicted. When Daimler took over, the big boss said, "get rid of the Cherokee" when it was probably one if the best sellers?! But now! If people keep paying those prices, then car companies will keep pushing the limits. Its basically our own fault ... And if a TV SCREEN is going to be a deal breaker, then car companies will do what we ask. A Jeep Wrangler is stupid capable, but if Apple car play doesnt work, or Android auto... Then people don't want it. So! The rest if us get Crap.

Jeep’s sales were high in 2018 because the prices were pretty reasonable. Iirc, the new wrangler outsold the Camry one month. It does sound like, from what you said in your video Jon, Jeep has an identity crisis and is trying to be something else instead of harkening back to it's roots. Well, you put my 3 Jeeps I've owned to shame. Back when I was either 18 or 19 I saw a WW2 jeep at a used car lot. Priced like it was made of gold. The salesman left us to poke around it and get it started, which it wouldn't do. It cranked, but wouldn't catch and I remember under the hood some electrics started smoking! Salesman bragged that the owners son had been driving it, even driving it up creeks. Once we got it started, it wouldn't MOVE! Took off the 4wd and it would go, but turns out something in the front drivetrain was locked up. We suspected that 'creek driving' had ruined either the diff or front axle. I offered them like $500. Needless to say, I never bought it. :)

Hubris, certainly, but I would also add questionable engineering (possibly done under the banner of cost cutting and/or the aforementioned hubris) - see the number of recalls in recent years and the drop in reliability ratings. Would I shell out the kind of money Jeep is asking these days for a vehicle that I would lack confidence in? Yeahhh, NO. If it were built like a tank and engineered to flourish in a post apocalyptic landscape, I'd at least consider it.

I think it's a shame AMC didn't make it. They made unique and innovative vehicles with such limited resources. Cherokee, the redesigned Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee were all AMC designs ..Grand Cherokee came out under Chrysler but AMC had it completed by its acquisition from Chrysler. The LH cars were also derived from AMC's Eagle Premier. with the exception of the Viper, after the K-car of the early 1980s and all of it's derivatives, there was very little innovation of their own in the 1990s and beyond to make them a stand out company. I think AMC was much more forward thinking. I remember as a kid seeing their concept 80 display at the Chicago auto show in the late 1970s, I know I'm old..lol, they had a mini van concept, luxury compact cars, and an electric car as part of the display. Seems like the wrong company survived.
