For the first time I really understood who was running where and what happened for cautions and lots of other things that I hadn't previously. I'm an old veteran of around 150 Cup races and recommend just a cheap walkman type radio with ear plugs .over my $500 scanners.

I still remember her....North Wilkesboro Speedway . Jeff Gordon my hero won her last NASCAR event. It would be cool if they didn't let this legendary racetrack die. I think that they should re-open North Wilkesboro Speedway perhaps they should have a night race at North Wilkesboro for the NASCAR Xfinity series or maybe the NASCAR Winston Cup Series could race there again so the young drivers could experience the legacy of North Wilkesboro including Kyle Busch, Brad Keslowski, Joey Logano and Bubba Wallace or even future drivers like me.

Its a shame that tracks like North Wilksboro have made way for the 1.5 mile cookie cutter tracks. It seems like NASCAR is going through what MLB and the NFL went through in the 70s and 80s where one size fits all. They had cookie cutter stadiums, NASCAR has cookie cutter tracks. Las Vegas, Kentucky, Kansas and Chicagoland (even with a curved back straight) are all carbon copies of each other. Atlanta was turned into another Charlotte and Texas was added for good measure. Auto Club is a lower banked copy of Michigan and the old Texas World Speedway.

Darrell Waltrip won this race~ As Brett passed Kyle at the end, he wasn't putting him a lap down.. he was passing him for position... so Brett actually finished 9th, the final car on the lead lap~ It was Waltrip, Earnhardt, Rudd, Shepherd, and Mark Martin as the top 5~ I don't care what NASCAR says, they were wrong, and Darrell Waltrip really has 85 Cup series wins~
@Holden3086 жыл бұрын
Before the Kenny Wallace yellow, Waltrip had passed Bodine and was in second place and pulling away (and catching Earnhardt). Then Bodine pitted, then Earnhardt, then Waltrip. DW was in front of Bodine and his pit stop was about 5 seconds faster which means if it had stated green it would have given Earnhardt and Waltrip about a 3/4 lap lead on Bodine because at the end of his run, the Buick had fallen back a fair way. The fact is that the pace car should have picked up Earnhardt in the lead with Waltrip second, Martin third, Bodine fourth and Shepherd in fifth.

Earnhardt had a bad pitstop, he was in his stall for a lap. Bodine was 1 3/4 laps behind, you can see him pass as Earnhardt leaves pit road
@Larry_Harvilla3 жыл бұрын
I am convinced through all the reading and watching I've done about this race that the correct call was made and Brett Bodine was the proper winner. Remember that he had short-pitted about 15-18 laps before the rest of the field. North Wilkesboro was known for killing tires, so even though Bodine had gone a lap down with his pit stop, his fresh tires allowed him to subtract about two seconds from Earnhardt's lead each lap. Although the TV guys didn't catch it, Bodine actually had re-taken the lead just before the Kenny Wallace crash. Probably due to scorers being lazy and not having fully reconciled the cycle of pit stops, the pace car was erroneously told to pick up the 3 (Earnhardt) as the leader. This allowed Bodine to zip around and very nearly have the lead lap to himself. During the confusion, Larry Mac was one of the few who knew what was going on, and told Bodine to come in for fresh tires, so that he would be on about equally fresh tires as the 3 and the 17. He got back out of the pits still ahead of the field, and ran around to the same almost-a-full-lap lead. It was at or after this point that the scorers realized their mistake and sent orders down to the pace car to let the field go past and pick up the 26 (Bodine) as the leader. This is what shrank Bodine's lead to just a few car lengths. Anyway, with the error corrected, they went green and Bodine just had to hold on for 62 laps to win.

Attendance wasn't a problem in 1997, it was that there weren't enough hotels, traffic lanes, restaurants, stores, shopping and entertainment options in North Wilkesboro as there were in larger markets. I have been to this track and it is a galactic pain in the ass to get to, and there is absolutely nothing there.

It was a logistics problem.
@bradleyhudgins10056 жыл бұрын
Well even if there was not all those damn hotels, shopping and other bull shit then how the hell did that place sell so many tickets that often? Ahh yeah because all that other crap don't mean a hell of a lot of nothing. Look at Texas motor speedway this last weekend... Barely over half full.... And has been worse at times for the past several years. And there's all kinds of crap nearby.... It is because NASCAR left places like North Wilkesboro that it has had a decline over time. Of course there's other big reasons as well. But leaving places like that race track was not a good move. Replaced with garbage be cookie cutter 1.5 mile tracks.
@Holden3086 жыл бұрын
The only problem with the attendance at NW is that it was lower than the other tracks in NASCAR because it had the lowest spectator capacity. And when it came down to it, it was all about Money for France Jr. and his mob and the newer tracks offered a much higher spectator capacity along with a lot more modern facilities for the fans, teams, media and officials. Every Cup Series race was always packed out at NW (well, the one's I've seen on video were always packed). None of the new cookie cutter tracks can say that.

Thanks for posting, I was at this race, me nor nobody in else in stands could figure out how bodine was winner. After watching this it clears things of my thinking back then, nascar just messed this race up, after listening to the announcers it's also clear he didnt win, that's why they said when off air on there side bets in who wins they would just go to next week and they chuckled. Sad thing is bodine knew he didnt win, he pitted and was lapped, when the hell he ever think he passed the earnhardt who was leading to get his lap back before the caution came out? @AutoRacer53 жыл бұрын
No, to get the lead. Brett had been out on fresh tires for about 5-6 laps so he was able to make up almost all the time he had been down. The rest of it was made up on pit road. Brett said in a podcast with The Scene Vault that his crew pulled off a totally flawless and fast stop there and Earnhardt had a problem on their stop. That’s where the rest of the time was made up.

Rob Moroso is a good drivers, but his 15 DNF in his rookie year and his stupidity of over the speed limit and drinking problem took 27 year old woman killed that she doesn't deserve to die and himself to be stupid for him and his family. P.S. and how Rob won rookie of the year in 1990 now that I don't know.
@danielbullock47035 жыл бұрын
The only competition he had for the Rookie title, Jack Pennington only started 14 races as opposed to the 25 that Rob started. Rob did earn one top ten finish that year at Daytona in July. Pennington had very little in the form of sponsorship. The awarding of the Rookie title was controversial, Nascar did not announce the winner during the Awards banquet, they waited to the end of the month, right before Christmas to quietly announce Moroso as Rookie of the year.

Miss N. Wilkesboro so much. Need 3 short track events each year to balance the schedule. It's still there. A race there would bring a lot of fans out. NASCAR is shooting itself in the foot just like IndyCar did in the '90s. Fans divided over the direction of the sport. Ticket sales way down except for the race at Circuit of the Americas. Repave N. Wilkesboro. Put up modern new stands. Build it and they will come.

2:14:26 Benny points out that pitting early is good strategy if the race stays green. It didn’t, but it did stay green through the whole pit cycle, meaning the cars that undercut made up time on the ones who pitted later. 2:16:53 Bodine is in 4th and the crew shows that group about a straightaway behind Earnhardt, 6 or 7 seconds back. 2:20:29 Bodine pits. 2:20:58 he leaves the pits 1 lap down, with about a turn between himself and Dale. (Note the advantage of fresh tires as other cars blow by Dale to get laps back.) When the camera pans out and shows the straightaway ahead of Dale a couple of laps later, Bodine isn’t in it. 2:24:39 Earnhardt pits. Bodine would’ve gone by to make up his lap about 5 seconds into the stop, the jackman has problems on the left side and Brett passes Dale as he’s leaving the pits, 20 seconds later (they were averaging 20-21 second laps). 2:25:47 Waltrip pits. Earnhardt can be seen going by to make up his lap right when the car goes up. At 2:26:03 Bodine is leading a pack of cars off turn 4 as Waltrip comes off the jack. When he comes out of the pits, he’s two cars behind Earnhardt, who is behind Bodine. 2:26:52 Bodine goes past Kenny Wallace but the pace car didn’t pick him up. He has just a few car lengths between himself and Earnhardt. So, to believe Bodine was “given” this race you have to believe that a car that was running 4th when it pitted and walked away from everyone after the caution had lost time for those 10+ laps and dropped back to 9th or 10th. It’s silly. Their error let him get fresh tires and stay in front. That’s it. Bodine had the best car at the end, and he won.
