+joaness45 Actually what really happened behind the scenes Joan, is the owner of the Bowling building has to fork over the 100,000 out of his own business.. Pro Bowling for many years actually hurt all those owners, and the earnings was always in the red and never in the black. The other reason is because you could not pack enough people in the building to make a profit. It was limited. One would need to have a building like an arena in order to make any money at all. Thirdly they did not have cover charge for people to come in to watch the tournament. Example >> First place the payout was like 75,000 , Second Place like 50,000 and all the way down to the 20th bowler. The purse itself was very high. Next the Pros had to pay a fee to bowl in that tournament I believe around 1.5 grand before PBA went under. In the earlier years it was around like 500 bucks. Many of these bowlers had sponsors who fronted up the money for them to travel to various places and also many of them traveled in Motorhomes. Why because I too was a Regional Pro in the 70's. I even worked on the side to supplement my income. It was not easy. Whatever a Bowler won, the sponsor gets a cut out of it, depending on the contracts given. Some paid out 20% up to 50%. Next if anyone of them hit a 300 game while on T.V., ouch goes to the bowling owner of the building. I can tell you they always prayed that no one gets a 300 during the T.V. finals. If one got a 300 during the rounds, there was no payout. For the Bowlers to make it, they had to win by total pin fall from 40 games to get to the T.V. rounds. Once there they had a match play of 3 games to get into the position rounds for the T.V finals. The top 8 bowlers were trying to win their matches > not by pin fall. Once the final 5 was set then came Sunday and that was the final T.V. round. By the way the tournaments started on Thursday morning to Saturday evening. Most pros arrived on Wednesday and did some practice rounds at the house that was hosting the tournament to get the feel of the lanes and its conditions. Those that did not make it by Saturday evening already left town to the next place that is on the schedule. Now Storm took over and also bought out the name PBA. The payouts is not as high as it used to be otherwise they too will go broke. First place most of the time is around 5 grand. The second place gets like 2,800, third like 2,400, fourth like 2 grand and 5th gets like 1,800. They now only pay out to the top 8 players and that is it!!!!. They now only have 3 major Tournaments a year and the first place prize is only 10 grand. If they get a 300 on the final game they get an extra 10 grand. That is all. So overall it got streamlined, downsized, and trimmed down, fixed it so they get more people to watch and they get money from T.V. and pay per view. All the bowling owners now are making money by this new format, and not the PBA bowlers anymore. Gone are the days of making big money in Bowling forever. The top bowler this year has only made about 200 grand and not more than that as far as I know. To do it, you have to keep winning make appearances, interviews etc., plus sell your name to storm and etc. This comes out to about near 4 grand a week. After this if there is a sponsor, they get their cut, and then you have to pay your income taxes like 35% of it. So by the time all is said and done, what you have left will be small indeed in the savings. Here is some math for you Hotel bill say 50 per night x 3 days =150 Food for 3 days 40 x 3 = 120 Travel ?? depends either by car or plane or train say 400 Sponsor gets 30% of whatever you win Sponsor pays up front your entry fees This is just a brief part. Now say you won 200 grand. Sponsor gets 30% = 60 grand Your expenses for 52 weeks = 34,840 Deduct now > you have 105,160. Taxes 35% > 36,806 and this leaves you with 68,354 in your bank account. Now if you have your own home, property taxes and if any kids or wife more taken as well. So by the time you are done you will be lucky to have for all your hard work winning every tournament or being in the top 5 consistently about 48 grand in your pocket!!!! If one makes the Triple Crown max pay out could be 30 to 40 grand depending on the scales by the owners itself. Most bowlers will average about 50 to 60 grand a year being in the circuit nowadays. People like Pete Weber or John Petraglia and others Norm Duke already have earned well over a million from their heydays in the 70 to 90"s They can survive easily on 50 grand a year bowling without a problem. Belmonte has only made 185,000 this year. He is averaging about 3,500 per week. Half of this is his side earnings like sponsoring for STORM or making appearances etc to various places, or interviews to get the people back into the game. So go half his bowling tournaments are averaging 1,800 per week. There you go.

joaness45 Today to build a bowling house will cost somewhere around 10 million for 40 lanes. 250,000 is for just 4 lanes and then it can cost more up to 350 grand if the new owner wants more eye candy like UV lighting, or music and all that other extravaganza. Today prices average around 4-5 dollars per game, and maybe a bit more if in a league. When I was bowling it only cost me 50 cents!!!!! For me I did shadow bowling and practice my shots which I can do all day without spending any money at all. You can practice spot bowling which means you keep bowling to one certain area and spot till you have it down pat, and work around. Usually crowds would come and watch me practice, and sometimes my coaches would carefully watch my form etc. The key to winning is your approach and delivery time and time again without much variation. I am amazed at all the crap that they talk about on bowling balls today. Its mind boggling. Truly I would prefer to get a yellow dot Columbia 300 bowling ball, and have it fitted for me and I will beat any of the resin reaction balls in the market today, and all that scientific B.S., and still get my hook breakout at the back end. It would be in my favor due to the lanes being synthetic nowadays. Problem is PBA says hardness must be no lower than 72. The yellow dot goes down to 58

Joshua Schraa 52 as of 1996, I'm sure he has a lot more now, he's still a rather successful bowler on the senior tour.
