Why re-use fluid?🤔 what if there is metal shaving in the fluid?

Love your garage! I like the grease on the gasket. Makes for easy clean-up the next time a change is made. My Ford Ranger has 322,000 miles on it! Maintenence is how that is done! I also use Militec-1 in all my oil for machinery and guns.

Hi Thomas we typically would not have done that, but this is my dad's truck and we literally just replaced the rear end fluid a couple of months prior to this video, so we knew that it was ok.

Yeah sure doesn't look like it it looks kind of old and dirty. But I was a little surprised that putting Grease all over a new gasket to hold it in place.

So I have an 06 ranger and noticed a lot of fluid on the differential. Should I just replace the gasket? Thanks very much!

If there is a leak from around the edges of the cover it may be time to replace the gasket.

@HomeOwnerRepair

If you do not have grease it is fine you do not need it. All the grease does is help to hold the gasket in place and when you tighten the differential cover down it will ooze out so that you can physically see that all of the bolts have been tightened. Hope this helps to clear up any confusion.

Most car manufacturers recommend every 30,000-60,000 check the owner's manual it should state the recommended interval. If you do a lot of off roading and swap it you may want to do every 15,000 hope this helps you out..Tony

Is this the most common cause for a rear diff leak?

Usually there is a tag (piece of metal) on the rear end cover that is stamped with the differential size. If you can find it, your local Ford dealer can run the VIN # for you and tell you what your truck came with. Hope this helps you out.
