We review a Nissan Maxima with a manual transmission. This was one of the most memorable cars I drove this year. It's fast and fun and the Double-Cam V-6 loves being revved. It's like that Roadmaster with the 6-speed stick. Suddenly the motor is set free! And now you're about to go on Craigslist and search for Nissan Maximas with 5-speeds!

This review is accurate. I have a 1999 Maxima 5 speed. It is one of the best cars I have ever owned; ..."Why" you ask? That silky smooth engine, super reliability, quick and fast. How fast? You had better use cruise control because there is no engine or wind noise at high speed. Don't floor it in 1st gear or 2nd gear or you'll just burn up your tires. Passing slower cars? No drama, no loud engine noise; it just pulls like silk. With synthetic oil; I'm afraid this car will last forever. This review is accurate.

My dad had a stick shift 2000 Maxima all through my childhood and teen years. That car carried me to so many school days and soccer games, and I learned to drive a manual on it. Sure, it constantly had a bunch of minor inconveniences, but that car hit 220k with no problem and was a joy to bring up to 60 pulling away from a deserted stoplight. Rest easy, old friend.

A long time regular customer of ours had a '97 SE 5 speed that she finally traded in in 2018. When she got rid of it the car it had just over 294k on it and still ran like a top. Just 2 or 3 months before getting rid of it she put approximately $1,400 into it. She just loved that car! The car was rusting around the body, the clear coat was shot, and it had dents and scratches all over the place. But boy did it run like a sewing machine! We figured the body would disintegrate before the engine or trans ever bit the dust.

That is OPTOMISTIC, probably numbers from a "car rag" that received a "factory messaged" unit. I owned a 2001 Maxima (5-speed), car had 222HP. The Best 0--60 time that Car and Driver got was right around 7 sec. So, with about 30 MORE HP, the 0--60 time was actually slower? Someone is LYING! The 0--60 ACTUAL time for the '99 was more like in the high 8sec range. The car magazines actually admitted that the factory supplied vehicles (any make) were "doctored" to make the numbers look better while looking stock. Consumer Reports would have the REAL numbers because they BUY the test cars OFF THE DEALER'S LOT!

Nissan used to push in their advertising that these A32s were the equal of a Taurus SHO because while they made less horsepower and torque, they also weighed less. So the hp/lb ratio was comparable to the SHO. It's around 15lb/hp and ft-lbs for both cars.

Isaac Sanchez Wasn't that the coupe only? The sedan to my knowledge didn't come until later. All of that was optional on Accords, and the base engine is still a 4 cylinder. Still, the Maxima has always come standard with six cylinders and a manual transmission up until 2008 when it was CVT only. Many standard features on Maxima's for the longest time were options with other companies.

Holy crap. I just finished watching your "car show" and then stumbled upon this. I bought myself a 5-speed 1999 Sterling Mist SE in Dec of '98. It didn't have leather or Bose (No highs, no lows, must be Bose). It was the only 5-speed on the lot. I'd never had anything with that much power (such as it was) before. I never drove it in inclement weather and it never endured the sticky hands of children nor the slobbery tongues of dogs. I, myself, never ate in the thing. I got bit by the WRX bug and I sold it 14 years later, almost to the day, with 47,000 miles on it. The first guy who came to look at it arrived with cash a bit under my high asking price, thinking he'd talk me down. He took one look at it, said, "Jesus, this is clean", shoved all the money into my hand and begged me to keep it until he could get back from the bank with the rest. I pretty much had that Max out of my head until I watched this. Thanks a bunch. Sort of.

Finally a Maxima! I had a 97 Maxima as my first car and freakin loved it! The save point and "car you drive when you want an SUV" analogies are perfect for this car. I hauled way more crap in my car than my friends Rangers and Trailblazers ever did and when it came time to upgrade I kept the Max for the inevitable day I have an accident and need to start over. For a 20 yr old car it's held up really well inside and out.

In this year of 2016, even the shittiest of shit boxes roll off the factory floor capable of out-turning 95% of anything built before 1980. When the bar is set this high, it's hard to give a shit about the handling of any car you buy, because you know it will be good. As a result, manufacturers get to take advantage of a grey area of "sport" labeling. People will catch onto their bullshit eventually though.

Toyota has for build quality of 90s ford now, rubber and interior are pealing off and a 3 year rav 4 and made a shitty rwd car and killed it quick because it does not sell like a mustang. Mazda has awesome looks and interiors but are under appreciated, nissan tries too hard in looks and charges too much. Lexus is still a tank but is trying for a market that they cant compete in. All cars can take out a 80s Ferrari mow but are soulless hunks of metal, and instead of advertising performance all brands are talking about car play and how your car will practically drive itself and avoid an accident.

GM did have something more appropriate performance wise to the Maxima - the Grand Prix GTP and Regal GS. Mostly the prior though. It is just an auto and wasn't as nicely put together, but 3800 Series II supercharged engines were good for 240 hp and 280 ft lb of torque so they had some decent get up and go and the engines tended to last a pretty long time. They'd give the Maxima a bit of trouble off the line at least. Probably not much different from the SHO, other than they lasted longer (That plastic piece in the auto transmissions on those Tauruses was particularly stupid). I have one of the "euro taillight" versions as Mr. Regular put it, a 2003 VQ35 Maxima with 255 HP and the 6-speed manual. Factory spec 0-60 was about 5.9 seconds. I can't find anything worthwhile to replace it that doesn't trade off reliability, high price tags, or the backseat and trunk space. These cars, once you find one with a stick, there's hardly anything like it and there's nothing that really competes with it for what it costs. And that sweet sweet VQ intake sound... Mr. Regular is welcome to drive and review my Maxima, mine also has grinding synchros from an abusive previous owner (Not a principal, just a tuner who liked to race all his cars).

The Falcons and Commodores are in a bit of a different class because they're RWD and were derived into high performance cars like the F6 Typhoon/GT's and GTS's/Clubsports. They were built to perform well. The Magna was a legend but still FWD.

I'm 99% sure this engine was also the same engine that was in the 300ZX with and without the Twin Turbo, in 300ZX form it had minor alterations on the exhaust and intake to give it another 20HP.. Not sure why you think this engine was ONLY in the Maxima,
@Altavilla22Mike
@Altavilla22Mike 8 жыл бұрын
+tyler5619 NOPE, the VG30E was in this Maxima, the VG30ET (T for turbo) was the turbo version fitted into the 300zx (Z31) - they used the same SOHC engine block with and without a turbo, the VQ wasn't introduced into a 300zx until the (Z32) which was a DOHC engine. As a past owner of a 350z I am familiar with Nissan engines.. Research involves more then pulling up a Wikipedia page, you have to actually understand what you are looking at to get an answer.
@Altavilla22Mike
@Altavilla22Mike 8 жыл бұрын
That wasn't even the point, the point is that the the VG30E was in this Maxima, the VG30ET (T for turbo) was the turbo version fitted into the 300zx (Z31) - they used the same SOHC engine block with and without a turbo. The VQs are a total side point of this argument..
